Brian Harrap
I came across this bit of odd trackwork on my travels recently, does anyone know what the blocks are for? They are clamped to either side of the side of the rail and don't seem to be connected to anything. Would be nice to know, Brian.
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted April 21, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 21, 2011 The platform looks to be at quite a low level and is that narrow gauge track? Perhaps in Queensland or Western Australia? Where is it please as that might help us to answer the query.
Bob Reid
Looks for all the world like rubber blocks clamped to the rail to reduce noise/vibration - and a quick search for "reducing rail noise" found this for "16miles of track in a new Epping to Chatswood commuter line in the suburbs of Sydney, Australia" (amongst other rail authorities lines) Tata Steel's SilentTrack tuned rail dampers
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted April 21, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 21, 2011 In jointed track days there were often stretches of line where the track seemed to "sing" as the train went over it. Epsom Common comes to mind, and it must have driven the residents mad. Less true since CWR became the norm, but still not unknown. This kit would appear to limit the resonance still further. Brian Harrap
Thanks for your help everyone - should have guessed I suppose. It is at St Goarhausen by the way, didn't notice trains being particularly quiet but then I hadn't heard them before on this stretch. Brian.

St Goarhausen used to be quite noisy for some reason - which might explain why those things have appeared?
