16t minerals

Recommended Posts

As someone who doesn't remember revenue earning steam, it feels a little odd to see so many shots of a "modern" wagon like the 16 tonner in steam hauled trains. Until, that is, that I remind myself that the 16 ton mineral wagon and its predecessor designs were around for 20 years before the demise of steam, which is, when I think about it logically, not that much less time than they remained in revenue service after 1968 :D.

Here's a couple I've been playing with recently:

Both are Bachmann models; the 'slope sider' was originally in MoT brown livery, and I repainted it using Humbrol 64 light grey.  Insignia are from Modelmasters Minipack 8019, apart from the end door stripes which looked odd to me on that sheet so I used some from sheet GP01.  Rusting was done using a variety of rust-coloured paint - have I overdone it?

The more conventional wagon in the background (B80220) is more 'as delivered', although I think I had to rearrange the brakes so that they looked as if they would work!  This one's noticeably darker; not sure whether too much so, although I have read of unfitted wagons being painted a 'battleship' grey in the early BR period, so perhaps it's OK for that.

Really must get round to ballasting that siding!

A lot of older minerals seemed to be in an almost 'Battleship Grey' colour; perhaps there was a lot of surplus paint to use up..I do wonder if there was a variation in the colour, dependent on where the wagon was built. At least one builder (Fairfield) was a shipyard, as well as building bridges and wagons, whilst Hurst-Nelson was in amongst the Clydeside yards.

The so called SNCF minerals have shown up in quite a few of the photos in this excellent and extensive trawling of the net. None of mine show the lettering, but the Parkside 7mm kit transfers reproduces it accurately . http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/brsncfmineral

During a general search I found this image http://www.flickr.com/photos/95430950@N07/12707315043/sizes/k/in/photostream/ thanks to jamerail on flickr, it shows a Cupboard Door 16ton mineral wagon IU041476) at Stratford Depot 11-07-81.  Any idea of original number?  Lettering is nice and clear.

Not too easy to read, but another ‘French’ wagon with writing (thanks to The Bigbee Line I’d say it’s the same text as the pic he posted)

The one of D1671 would have been taken at Hayes' scrapyard outside Bridgend, where the loco was cut up after its fatal collision with a six-eighter; it was almost brand-new.

The 'bollard' in the last photo is a capstan for moving wagons by cable; I wonder where those last two shots were taken? For some reason, the last one makes me think of Avonmouth; the other looks as though it's the reception sidings at a hump yard? Perhaps the re-fettled Up yard at Severn Tunnel Junction?

Apols if any reposts, though I'm pretty confident we've never had Perth Harbour on here!

Come on, who's going to make a scrap / Hillman Imp joke ????  :jester:

Hey I had an old dark green Hillman Imp as my first car, it was already considered a sad car. But it didn't chug much petrol (for those days) and it was a reliable runner. I used it until I had my dads old Passat Estate it was bright mustard yellow. I'm not sure about the cars....the colours left something to be desired.
