A trip over to Grantham produced the following.

 

Class 08 (3037/56, 3363, 3402), class 20 (8077), class 25 (7509/57), class 31 (5674/75, 5812/52), class 45 (38/68/69/98, 113), class 47 (1500/04, 1698, 1811/59).

 

At this time 5674 and 5675 where part of a batch of five class 31’s (5671 – 5675, 31243 – 31247) fitted in 1965 with tablet catchers mounted within cab recesses to aid single line working on the High Dyke – Stainby iron ore branch (south of Grantham) and could usually be found in the 1960’s and early 1970’s out-stationed at Grantham.

On this day in History –Toton – 15th February 1970

 

On this day forty years ago despite it being the winter it was out with the push bike for a twenty mile round trip to Toton for a “bunk” round the shed. This is what was seen that day:

Thirty six years ago today, 19th February 1977, D1013 'Western Ranger' worked the 'Southern Belle' railtour, Waterloo - Bournemouth - Weymouth - Southampton - Havant - Guildford - Redhill - Guildford - Reading - Ascot - Waterloo.... one week later it was all over for the Hydraulics on BR.

Nice one Neil... I think (99% positive) the 16th Jan was the day I had a short cab ride on D1022... ten days later it was withdrawn!

 

Another Wizzo railtour anniversary today :

 

20th February 1977, John Vaughan's 'Railway Pictorial Publications' organised 'Western Requiem' ran thus : Paddington - Swindon - Gloucester - Cardiff - Pontypridd - Treherbert - Pontypridd - Aberdare - Pontypridd - Merthyr - Pontypridd - Cardiff - Bath Spa - Swindon - Paddington... D1010 was in trouble soon after departure from Padd and on arrival at Cardiff Central it was promptly failed. 37 179 was duly tied on in it's place for the runs up the valleys and D1023 took over at Ppontypridd for the last leg and returned the tour to Paddington.

Sorry that this is a day late, but I hadn't been paying much attention to the date until today, which is a family birthday.

 

February 23, 1963 (half a century ago!!) - my first visit to Polmadie and Corkerhill sheds in Glasgow. Even then, these sheds were starting to be run down from what they had been. There had been a big withdrawal of express passenger engines at the end of the previous year, and dieselisation was under way, but there were still a lot of interesting things to see. I don't have my detailed notes from the time, but here are some highlights (IMO at least).

 

Most of the 'big' engines withdrawn from Polmadie at the end of the previous December were still there - Duchess 46227, three Scots (46105/07/21) and the Clans (72000-4). The whole of the first batch of Claytons was also lined up, dead, in the yard. The problems with them had meant that some steam locos had had a reprieve from withdrawal. There were various Caley 0-6-0s still in steam, two of Polmadie's three 8Fs, which had actually been withdrawn and then re-instated (they would go on to be withdrawn twice more by BR!) and what I think was the last of Polmadie's own WD's to remain active - 90229. An oddity I remember was Stanier 5 45090 with a fully-lined green tender.

 

Then on to Corkerhill. All of that shed's Jubilees and the two Scots transferred from Polmadie for Christmas 1962 parcels traffic had been withdrawn at the end of December. Some of the Jubilees had been moved to a 'dump' at Lugton, but the rest (45673/677/687/692/693/727), and the Scots (46102/04), were still here. Also on the scrap line was a single 2P (40615) and a couple of Caley 0-4-4Ts (55203/21).

 

These were the remarkable engines. There were also the dozens of 'regular' steam engines still about - Fairburn tanks (none copped today), Standard 4 tanks (no cops), Stanier 5s (9 cops), Standard 5s (3 cops), Standard 4 moguls etc.

 

From Corkerhill, I walked to my Gran's flat in Shawlands to get my tea, and another first - the first time I saw the Beatles on TV, singing (actually miming) 'Please Please Me' on 'Thank Your Lucky Stars'.

 

(The 'family birthday' I referred to at the begining of this - my youngest turning 32. Boy, am I old!)

That was an amazing time for tours! I travelled on the relief tour the week before on the 13th - 1010 was on top form that day despite a burned out exhaust valve - and up to York the day before to see 1023 arrive despite best bovine efforts in the Charfield area

At least one hundred and twenty one locomotives in an area that nearly forty years later you would be lucky to find five operational locomotives. Things to note are the abundance of class 25’s, (Tinsley had a batch of class 25/0’s on allocation at this time) and 3035 and 3037 which had been withdrawn the previous December and would be converted unsuccessfully into snowploughs ADB966508 and ADB966510 respectively, both broken up in 1979

Locomotives of note were ex Southern Region class 08’s 3092/94/98 and 3100 which were withdrawn and were about to undergo an overhaul having been sold for export to a Liberian company, LAMCo and 24049 which had been in the works for almost a year receiving a replacement cab with the later style roof mounted headcode box. This was following an accident at Kidsgrove when the No2 end cab was crushed back to the bulkhead with the bulkhead bent backwards into the boiler compartment.

On this day in History - Day Excursion to Plymouth - 11th March 1972

 

One way in the early 1970’s of travelling to interesting railway destinations on the cheap was to become a Notts County Football Club supporter for the day and use their football special train (Footex). Being in the old Division 3 at this time meant little risk of football hooligans and some interesting railway destinations. On this day forty years ago Notts County played Plymouth away and I used the Magpies Footex for a trip to the South West and back with traction being provided by Peak 95 and in lieu of the match a bus ride/walk out to Laira MPD. Result of the match was a 1-1 draw.
