       Every time I look at your fathers records, I am astounded by the few 'cops' he makes on each of his journeys. His 'Combine' must have been pretty full! Still great reading tho'!

Thanks for your kind comments, Peter. Sorry the pages were in the wrong order. I have now corrected that.

He had always been primarily a GWR fan, growing up in Hereford; then university in Oxford. From the early 50s we lived in Somerset, so the lines to and from Bristol were his favoured spotting locations. Therefore he built up his lists over many years.

17th August 1969 (Sunday)

Stoke/Crewe Works

 

On this day forty four years ago I paid a visit to Stoke and Crewe. At Stoke locomotives were stabled at Cockshute and on shed were four class 08’s (3291/92, 3798, 3801), eleven class 24’s (5011/20/23/27/33/44/49/63/76/86/92) and one class 25 (5237). Later a tour around Crewe Works produced three class 08’s (3068/95, 3217), one class 11 (12062), four class 20’s (8061/67, 8188, 8303), three class 25’s (7555/61, 7627), thirteen class 40’s (218/39/42/45/73/75/77/81/88, 345/52/64/94), thirty four class 47’s (1501/02/05/06/08/09/10/14/17/28/29/48, 1617/48/77/84/87, 1701/02/12/32/39/44/50/60, 1811/12/58/63/86, 1919/37/60/83), one class 50 (400), three class 73’s (E6012/13/25), one class 74 (E6109), five class 76’s (E26006/16/23/28/48), one class 82 (E3050), one class 84 (E3045), one class 85 (E3077) and four class 86’s (E3111/13/52/93).

 

Of note is the variety of classes under repair at Crewe works including Southern Region electro-diesels and the Manchester – Sheffield dc electrics which were repaired at Crewe following the closure of Gorton works in the mid 1960’s. Also of note is the large number of the first batch of class 47’s (nine out of twenty). After six years in traffic were they due their first general repair? Finally 12062 would be withdrawn eight months later in April 1970 and was broken up at Derby works in December 1971.

Some comments, Westerns still putting in an appearance and the summer heatwave was now really beginning to show its mark. Regular Western turn was still the 1C63 Padd-Cardiff which appeared in Bristol early evening. I didn't record what Hussar and the Emp were doing unfortunately, most probably on stone trains.

 

The two 50s were kops for my round Bristol and 1976 collections, and were probably their first arrival on the WR, often working turns from Birmingham to the South West.

 

The South Wales-Londons were still firmly in the hands of the 47/4s and nothing could touch the peaks on the NE-SW trains except a few 47/0s.

 

The HSTs were working together coupled, (clearly noted in my notebook, no I didn't imagine it - it was real!) presumably for testing circuitry for possible multiple working/track circuitry in the future.

 

Oh for the summer of "76!

Only three class 20's. Does this show how reliable they were, or did the design make depot repairs easier?

I think Crewe were only doing accident damage work on EE type 1's during this period.   Derby did the rest but of course they were quite new and easy for Toton to repair.

Saturday 29 August, 1964    Yate (near Bristol)

 

This was the penultimate Summer Saturday of 1964 and the penultimate occasion when Midland trains to and from Bristol were worked by steam.

 

Yate was an interesting junction where the two lines to Bristol, via Mangotsfield and Filton, diverged.  By 1964 both Midland and Western trains used both routes to ease congestion.  The Midland route closed in late 1969 and all trains now run via Filton and Bristol Parkway.

 

The motive power on this day was very varied with Jubilees, Black Fives, Halls, Castles, B1's, Standard 5 & 4's and a 4F on a local freight.  It was worth the cycle ride to witness the procession of trains from the North East, the Midlands and the Birmingham area heading for the Southwest and their return workings as holidaymakers returned home.

You did well to see D1020 'up country', it was much more common down in the far west on milk, china clay and weekend duties due to being vacuum braked only (one of the four never to receive dual braking). Equally, D1002 and D1003 weren't that common away from the West Country during the same period.

 

(Incidentally, in light of the thread title, thirty five years ago today I started on the railway...!)

It wouldn't surprise me at all if someone managed to snap D809 elsewhere that day back in '71, a few canny photographers made a real effort in the last year or so of the 800s. Good material is still coming out of the woodwork, a bit like 'Ferrari barn finds' in a way. I'll post the question on the facebook Hydraulics group, Mark Alden, Martin Street and Roger Geach are on there so something might turn up. I know not everyone does fb, but the railway groups on there are often very useful. The aforesaid Hydraulics group is top notch.

 

Edit : just realised you also saw D1018 in the London area, another of the 'vac only famous four' which was more common down west in its last few years. There's a cracking shot of it at St.Erth in the Bradford Barton Cornish diesels book, fresh from its recent repaint at Laira and not far away from early withdrawal.

You may well be right about someone snapping Champion that day.After all,when I posted a question about a "Merrymaker" in September 72,not really hoping for much,the aforementioned Mr. Alden posted a pic of same,amazing.Guess it's possible that photographers of that period who lost interest in railways may have disposed of their collections...

 

I used to regularly look at Hydraulic pics on the net,can't remember which site,before they moved to FB,which I'm not on.Is it easy for a dinosaur like me to get hooked up on that? Just to expand a bit,me and a mate used to attend open days and head straight for the stands selling slides/photo's.We unearthed a few gems over the years,none more so than my mate finding a b/w shot of Hercules at Yeovil Jct. on it's final Exeter-Waterloo working.It was taken by Geoff Lendon,we both have a few of his pictures,absolutely top quality.Does the FB group have access to his work?

 

I know the shot of D1018 you mean,I kept all my BB books thankfully,they could easily have been chucked out as my railway interest disappeared for a long time.I think the four VB Westerns had some of the best names..

 

Maybe one day that elusive identifiable picture of Warrior in blue,in service, may surface...

It's easy to get logged in to facebook Neil if you're so inclined, I wasn't interested for ages and only signed up when a mate at work told me about the railway photographic groups he was on. I do some 'family stuff' on there but mostly it's for the railway and classic car related nostalgia. If you do sign up and get endless 'friend requests' just ignore them!

 

You're right about collections being binned or lost, I 'lost' thousands of negs and prints over thirty years ago when I moved away from London, my big mistake was not labelling the boxes properly, they were all in old Tamiya military model boxes which someone else chucked in the bin without checking first. It was a mix of mid '70s to early '80s WR stuff around Padd, Old Oak and the South West.... it still grates to this day that I took my eye off the ball!

 

Yesterday the postie delivered my latest naughy purchase, namely Roger Geach's recent book 'Plymouth to Paddington' which has a couple of very historic photos that to some observers wouldn't seem that important, he managed to capture the very last Warship working in Cornwall (824 in December '72) and the very first appearance of a 37 (37 142 on a crew training run in February '78) in the county. All goods stuff.

Monday September 9, 1963  Bristol

 

The first Monday of the 1963-64 Winter Timetable and Jubilees were in evidence, covering for Peak non-availability.

 

In this first shot Bristol Barrow Road Jubilee 45690 Leander descends Fishponds Bank towards Barrow Road Shed and Bristol Temple Meads.

The photo clearly shows the gradient of the bank and also the small merchant's coal depot, now part of the country's history, but once common.

Later the same afternoon I was surprised to see 45690 rostered for the 17.35 Bristol to York, which meant that the southbound Devonian would be arriving with steam.  I was able to take this photo of Jubilee 45675 Hardy passing the engine sidings at Bristol Barrow Road with the train.

A hasty retreat was then required to photo 45690 returning north on 1N87 York train.  It was impossible to get a good shot of trains leaving Platform 12, and this was no exception.

The reflection of the Temple Meads approaches on the windows of the first coach provide (limited) interest.

I lived in Hammersmith Neil, from '83 to '85, and Roger's latest book is by York Publishing Services Ltd.

 

Rich, good looking and blonde...? You can't have all three mate!

D1028 was on 1C51 19.00 Paddington - Swansea & D1036 was on 7C28 13.40 Acton - East Usk or 6A18 21.25 Cardiff - Didcot power station MGRs depending on the time you saw it...
