Soham and Manea

Decided to head out for a few hours to catch the infrastructures off March Whitemoor, looking at Freightmaster I noticed there were a couple of 'liners around, so headed over to Soham (on the single line between Ely and Bury St Edmunds) to grab them, haven't been around the area before so out with the map (for photo vantage points) and the SatNav - to get me there !

Thanks for posting those beast. My lads went to school at Soham when we lived in Newmarket, so that was a trip down memory lane for me. As I was brought up in North London, I'm curious what Alexandra Palace infrastructure is. Can you tell me more?

The old station and North London Line are long gone and the only other station is down the bottom of the hill. I believe that is now called Alexandra Palace, although in my day it was Wood Green.

Is there some huge building project going on?

Probably a track relaying job, the trains I saw were ballast ones, I'm guessing the new rail had already been dropped.

In the set from Manea, 6th one, what's that on the right of the running lines? Looks almost like the old favourite "burnt out brake van" dumped off the rails...

It sure is.

The derelict brake van at Manea is DS55945. This is an ex Southern Railway 'Pill Box' type brake van and an early example as well (in fact the third one built) with the duckett offset to the left and is at least 80 years old (later examples have the duckett on the right).

It is not burnt out, merely derelict having stood in the same place for at least 20 years. Its last livery was BR engineers olive green. A photograph of this van taken in June 2000 appears in 'British Railway Goods Wagons in Colour 1960-2003' by Robert Hendry.

Thanks for the info on the SR brake. Sounds like it's quite an interesting item, I assume it's been marooned with the track disconnected :O I also assume it's too far gone to be a preservation contender...:(

Actually it still looks in a reasonable condition. In the photograph in Richard Hendry's book the roof was already half gone. If nothing else the chassis might find a use underneath a restored Victorian coach body. I wonder if there are any more similar 'disused' items of rolling stock still around the system? I remember seeing some rolling stock alongside the up ECML just north of Finsbury Park, what appeared to be a fruit 'D' and a pair of milk tanks.

I moved to Manea - Welney Road AHB for some further shots, the weather was very dark and overcast but I've never been a "trains are more fun in the sun" person...

  • 2 months later...

Kimberley Park MNR was the intended destination but problems were experienced in getting the load round one of the turns. The box has now gone to Dereham. It is possible a combined road and rail effort early next year will see the box finally get there.

We went past Manea on Easter Saturday, and the SR Brake Van is still there! Planking's beginning to fall off though.

Barry.
