Three of us (Tim, John and me) will be demonstrating on the 'Modelling BR (Southern)' upstairs - with 'the viaduct' as a work in progress; and one of the new Eridge boards will be there with a couple of the guys from KAG. Hope to see you on the Sunday then Chris!

Two years in a row, you're doing well!

Looks like I am going to go on the Saturday now, while it will be busier theres more chance of clearing extra stock on the 2nd hand stand.

Looking forward to seeing the Viaduct, and Clutton is also on my "to spend a lot of time looking at" list.

So long as I can sell enough value to cover my shopping list of some springie w irons, my first high level chassis, wheels, wheel press and some sort of axle jig I will be very happy!

Having missed Wells I'm even more desperate to get to a show now! Pass away is booked (Helen being more than happy to spend a Saturday on her own back in Bristol with our new Lab puppy...)

This one is also listed in the exhibition section http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/42730-guildex-2011-telford/ and in this case AFAIK there are no layouts there. Exhibitions most likely mean predominately model railways as in layouts etc and/or model trade.

18 layouts in one form or another demonstrating 7mm/ft modelling at Telford this year.. Looking forward to it..

JB.

Attended for the first time last year, as a OO modeller interested in improving locos... was inspired by what I saw and the friendly atmosphere... and now working on a start in P4... although still dubious about all that it will require in terms of new skills. But yes, this show, for me, is a must... lots to see, plenty of friendly faces to chat to.. and lots of exciting products to browse. If you just want layouts, the quality will not disappoint.... but there's so much more. Aiming this year for Saturday. Hope to see some of you there.

A collection of layouts; demonstrators, and specialist traders. Personally I can't see the "subtle" difference between Scaleforum and any other model railway "exhibition". Every show I have been to up and down the UK follows the the same format. The only defining characteristic of Scaleforum is that it promotes finescale modelling with a distinct emphasis on P4 (which is the scale I model in). Call it what you like; "forum" or "exhibition" it is still a venue where like minded bods come together to inspire and be inspired. I'm sure more people would have a go at P4 if it's often perceived (and real) elite ethos was dispelled. On the occasions that I went to SF I found the layout operators to be very cold, unfriendly and reluctant to part with the enigma that was then, something extraordinary in the world of 4mm. This was sad and although I really admired the skill involved in the building the layouts that I saw, this lofty attitude did nothing to encourage me to have a go. It doesn't matter a hoot if every crack in the road, next to Ludlow Junction is the precise length and colour as seen circa 1964/65, the point is that these are just models! Every layout ever built has as much credibility as the finest in the land; what's important, and often overlooked by some, is that each of these miniature creations is pure escapism and a place to unleash one's creativity. Having fun in other words. I model in P4 only because I want something challenging to do and to be able to create (as far as I can) a model that looks as close to what one finds (or used to find) on our former rail network. I still love looking at others layouts in any scale; I like atmosphere and originality, not how accurate my fireman's sock is or that 9645 never had a piece of plastic flash on its dome in 1956, especially in the Oxford area. Regardless of my past experiences at SF (and other shows I hasten to add), this would not deter me from going again, purely because the standard of modelling is generally high and very inspiring. Scaleforum is listed under exhibitions because it is precisely that, an exhibition... a gathering of folk in a "convivial" atmosphere discussing model trains... not a meeting of the UN.

Don't forget your wallet!!!!

And your p4 deltic if you want to have a play! :)

Mike... as if I would..!? Hope to see you (and Brian) there ;) .

Jim, your offer has been noted. Thank you. I'd love to... but (there's always a but). The speed I work to is slightly er... slow, my progress has had cause to be regarded as comaprable to the more speedier of tecktonic plates... so I don't expect that my "Deltic" will be in a runnming condition, let alone complete and finished enough to be honoured enough to be sat on your trackwork; I'm afraid that it woudl really let the side down and I'd have to go and sit quietly in a dark room somewhere whilst others contemplated my fate  .

Ok... but I do have a schedule... as I plan to finish the loco before the actual loco's 50th anniversary of hand-over to BR - give the type's 50th anniversary this year (and there are several aren't there!) ... and D9020 being the second to last to be delivered - I have until 12-2-12 to complete my project (a nicely balanced date if you ask me). If I can get some daylight spare time (from work and Dad-ing duties) I will try to crack on with the painting and get the necessray blue coats on and then set about all the final details to add, noting that some of these details are near completion... but I still need to work out how to fasten the brake chains to the bogies now that I used the Hornby 50 brake cylinders.

Sorry - that was all off topic. If funds/time permit, I'll drop my spare P4 wheel set in one of my earlier Deltics and find a chip to pop in... just in case ;) . Thanks all... see you there.

I'm not sure how many P4 layouts there are in the UK but the number must be pretty small by comparison to OO gauge, etc.

Simon

In compling the Scalefour Society event calendar, in 2010 I logged 71 different P4 layouts that appeared at 69 different venues. Some only appeared at one show during the year, others at several but overall there were 128 appearances of P4 layouts at shows. Of course despite my best efforts I may have missed some.

In the (still on-going) process of compiling the Scalefour Society's layout database, I have the details of around 280 P4 layouts; some are under construction, some no longer exist, some are functioning but are not available for exhibition, some still exist but are mothballed, some are exhibited, but only infrequently, and of course many are available for exhibition and do appear at shows. It is hard to pin down a definitive number, the totals of available layouts fluctuate as new ones become available and others are retired, sold or broken up, and I'm reliant on people providing up to date information, ho ho! But overall at any one time I'd say that there are around 100 to 150 P4 layouts (including some under construction) that are available for exhibition.

Those are very interesting statistics Decapod and clearly show how few P4 layouts there are in reality. What would be really interesting would be to find out roughly how many OO gauge layouts there are in the UK followed by EM for a comparison with P4.

Well I intend to attend this show for my first time this year as a newly established member - Probably one of the youngest too! I am looking forward to the show, to continue exploring into the realms of S4 which will hopefully help to determine what gauge/scale I model out of the 4mm category next. From the outlook it, I will probably be attending on the Saturday which could be a benefit in terms of the 2nd hand stand but not in terms of traffic for the 180 odd mile trek it is for me (each way :O )

There seems to be a good selection of layouts in my opinion, which I haven't seen previously with the exception of Clutton. The line up also appears to consist of various sized layouts along with a range of modelled periods/regions, not to mention a fantastic list of suppliers and traders.

You can make statistics "prove" anything you want.

150 or so P4 layouts is still quite a lot. Certainly more than enough to show the standards work.

If you bring your Deltic make sure it's got a DCC chip in it and bring it over to Longcarse West for a run.

Cheers

David

Thanks David... it was nice chatting at EMExpo... and I look forward to chatting at leatherhead... but the Deltic is a no go - my blog entry identifies how I've made a complete and utter c##k up. Sorry.

Hi,

Unfortunatly, I will not be able to attend, because I have to attend my sisters wedding on the saturday and I doubt I'll be allowed out on the Sunday!

Simon

Not getting too drunk might be a start ... [as if you would!]

Hi Bill,

If you cant get my links to work try going to the Scalefour Society's front page www.scalefour.org there are links to ticket sales right there at the top of the page.

Our ticket pricing for Scaleforum doesn't include a concessionary rate I'm afraid, tickets cost £4.50 for members and £7.50 for non-members, although subject to conditions 'groups' of members can purchase tickets for £3.50, the details of this are explained on the website, and Group tickets are only available in advance, not on the day.

Non members that join the Society at the show can claim back the £3 difference in ticket price.

There are concessionary rates for Society membership however and these apply for those 65+ or under 18.

All the Best

Danny
