Lukasz
Brandon is my local station. Should've mentioned. And the black estate looks to me my dear mums car there. Can't be sure of course. I imagine countless black mercedes roll through brandon but considering she makes a good few trips through the town a day I would say theres a good chance it is. cheers, Lukasz

RMweb Gold Trevellan Posted March 5, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 5, 2012 I hope I will be forgiven for tarnishing what has proved to be a very interesting thread with one of my happy snaps, dating from May 1991 and shot on Kodachrome 200 in fairly dull conditions. I used to think that Kodachrome was the bees knees in terms of transparency film, but these days my 6 megapixel digital compact can match or even beat it on quality.
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted August 26, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 26, 2012 Visited Shippea Hill, Lakenheath, Brandon and Thetford today, as the boxes were all closed last weekend - photos to follow at some stage - boxes still standing, looking untouched, possibly the block shelves have gone but 3 of them still had their nameboards ! All but 2 of the signals are still standing, although no arms on the semaphores, and I assume the colour lights are X'ed out of use (couldn't see the front). Very sloppy work at Shippea and Lakenheath where some ground signals from the old boxes have been left, unbagged ... in fact there is a lot of cleaning up work to do.

RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted February 21, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 21, 2013 Update time Eccles Road - 26 January 2013 Eccles Up Distant, with the ominous green mark - meaning "to go" (ER19) Focused on the background to show the new signalling To the left, the new up line signals, 8164 - 2 aspect repeater 8165 - 3 aspect stop To the right is the old down starter, ER4 and it's replacement 8167 The cabin - out of use with the up home (ER18) minus it's arm Looking towards Harling Road - the down home (ER3) minus arm stands to the right, the new signal 8149 is just visible, at green. Up home with it's replacement, 8164 visible in the distance, this view is looking back towards the level crossing where the distant was photographed Proving the barriers do work ... even if a human presses a button to indicate "Crossing Clear" EN (Ely Norwich) 8158 - replacing the ground signal behind (ER13), the ground signal routed to the siding only, the new one routes over the crossover or to the siding - I wonder if I will ever photograph it "off" Down home and the siding connection, the old disc reading out (ER10) is just viisble - less face. 170205 on 2K83, 15:35, Norwich - Cambridge passes the old and the new 05 February - the snow has gone and so have the down home, starter and ground signals ...

RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted February 21, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 21, 2013 No problem Pete - it's easier for me to get there than you ! They are the gismos to work the crossing, radars, control units and reflectors (visible in some of the shots) - and round here they get covered in mud, lots of it, so they have to be cleaned daily, several times in some places. hoovernut
nice to see the pictures of brandon box. I spent many a happy time drinking tea in there with one of the signal men. Its just a shame that it has been decommisioned. Bring it back online then we might actaully have a week of trains running without the gates getting stuck in the down position, Two hours last monday.
Harry2013
This is a signal box at Chelmsford .. a rather untypical position I suspect. English Heritage recently refused to grant it protected status, a spokesman for Network Rail said "We do not have any plans to demolish the box and it will remain in situ for the foreseeable future." http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0b/Chelmsford_signal_box.JPG/800px-Chelmsford_signal_box.JPG [Obviously not my pic]
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted September 22, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 22, 2014 On 17th September 2014 the frame was removed from Harling Road - for preservation on the Wensleydale Railway. LNERGE - Richard - was involved in this (majorly!) and was kind enough to invite me along to see (and a tiny bit of assistance) - this was all official and I was duly signed in and safety briefed. Unfortunately I also had to work so only managed a couple of far too short visits but I still enjoyed myself (as much as a signalling enthusiast can when a signal box is being dismantled under his feet) - a great bunch of lads were doing the work that day. The NR MOM was particularly impressed by my mobile phone app which gave details of all the trains around ! Anyway here's some photos of the day. I had to leave for work - I return in the afternoon and the frame has been put on the back of a lorry.

LNERGE
One had the name board before I could get to it ! Many years ago i walked across a road wielding a similar crowbar. A member of March's finest constabulary happened to be passing and couldn't stop his car quickly enough to apprehended me. He asked 'what did i intend doing with that crowbar'? so i told him i intend to prise the nameboard off that signalbox... I then gave him my letter of authority to remove the whole signalbox, lever frame and everything else not bolted down and most of what still was. Luckily it was a Saturday and Bob Ballard was in Collectors Corner at Euston and took the call from him, checking the authenticity of the letter. All he could say after that was 'well i never' and he left us alone.
