DonB
There have been a couple of Cycling threads here but I thought that this video might interest a wider audience. It's a fairly rare view /tour of a factory showing how modern hi-tech machinery is used as well as being an advertising medium. http://www.vitalmtb....505/MTBCUT-tv,6 Edit...No connection with this company, not even as a customer, although I could be convinced....! RMweb Premium Mike Bellamy Posted December 5, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 5, 2011 Hi Don There is another UK manufacturer just a few miles from you in Derby - Mercian http://www.merciancycles.co.uk/ http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/Website-update-puts-bike-maker-exports-300-year/story-11608932-detail/story.html No fancy video - just good old fashioned British craftsmanship with each bike built by hand Mike
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted December 5, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 5, 2011 I use Hope lights on my MTB. Very good product.
EddieB
From its title, I thought this was a thread about making bicycle parts on an industrial scale from accidents involving cycle lanes that go nowhere. http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereveningnews/news/s/1466849_give-us-a-brake-cyclists-in-oldham-baffled-by-80m-bike-lane#comments (no jokes about the name, please) http://www.christianwolmar.co.uk/2011/11/cycle-deaths-put-the-spotlight-on-poor-facilities/ (likewise, but for different reasons)
EddieB
[For some reason, the web browser here won't let me edit or delete my last message. Please treat the following as an edit...] Sorry, but I get quite angry about the self-promotion that attends cycle lanes, compared to the inaction when they are found to be badly designed or downright dangerous. DonB
EddieB If you are (like me) using AOL then the edit and delete functions are not recognised by the AOL browser, it's not Andy's fault this time! Cycle lanes are even more dangerous when cars park (legally) on them! The thread was intended as interest for cyclists, not as a strarting point for another car versus bike Rant! Mike Bellamy.... Thought you knew me well enough to know that I ride a Mercian Cycle, and have been doing so for the last 20 years, now using my third of the breed. RMweb Gold mudmagnet Posted December 5, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 5, 2011 Can't go wrong with an Orange - hand-built in Halifax.
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted December 5, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 5, 2011 Hope kit is very good - and their customer service - IMO - is good also. I have Hope lights and disc brakes - both used to good effect in Gisburn Forest tonight. Their factory is about 15 miles from me and if I'm desperate for any parts, I can go and knock on their door. Cheers, Mick

RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted December 5, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 5, 2011 Can't go wrong with an Orange - hand-built in Halifax. We have an Orange steel framed hard tail. Excellent machine. Fastest thing I ever ride on trails.
60026to
Back in the day I always wanted an Orange Vitamin T but could never afford one. I have to make do with a Saracen Zen 1 2010, it'll do.

RMweb Premium melmerby Posted December 6, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 6, 2011 I think if you look around there are still plenty of UK bike manufacturers. It's just that there is no mass market company like Raleigh any more. The present manufacturers cater for the more discerning cyclist that wants something of quality or more distinctive style, usually hand built. e.g. The Moulton bike is still produced in the UK. Incidentally some far-east machines have parts from elsewhere. Mine (Taiwanese) has Japanese gears, French wheels, and German brakes.
