In all tmes of trouble that we have in the world i can honestly say that apart from my wife  i can turn to my layout and shut out what i dont wanna know, my layout comforts me with past memories that keep flooding back time after time which makes me feel there is something good and nostalgic to be proud of and not everything is destructive.

Caring what goes on in the wider world is what separates humanity from the animals. Taking all those cares on your own shoulders is not recommended. A warm partner and a healthy hobby are invariably good for balancing things a little. Stick with it!

Aye, this hobby helped keep me going during the scary times of the early '80s and it's still useful when the world gets a bit heavy.

When I look back too, the hobby has always been there like a security blanket, even during times of relatively little going on. I recall manning a remote office outpost for six months which was like the Carlsberg complaints telephone room - quiet as the grave. The area manager would come in for about fifteen minutes once a week, on a Friday, but the rest of the time there was simply nothing doing. I reckon I owe my sanity to BBC local radio and old Monty Wells articles from RM - because during this time I kept myself occupied crafting a Baby Deltic from Hornby donor engines. Even now, on long trips it's not just the thought of smiling faces waiting, but the personal Narnia that we each create, that fires the soul.

I agree with all the comments above. Working on my new layout is one of my "planks of sanity" for the next 2-3 years. And, with like-minded friends around, it's a centre for socialising as well. What a fantastic activity/hobby/therapy...whatever you call it.

Those who sneer at "modellers" just haven't got a clue!

1.Known to many good folks ( coppers, men and women) ending up either going tilt (and having to 'retire)', hitting the bottle or topping themselves.

2.Without doubt, my hobby has saved my sanity, and who knows, with all I contend with, possibly even my life.

3. And if you think I am being melodramatic, refer again to 1 above.

Its a great hobby, pure escapism.

Best hobby I have. I started at age 11, now nearly 60. I have allways had a layout (or two !!) on the go since 1963. Now I'm retired I have a bit more time (but a bit less money) for my modelling. I like the old stuff (crescent signals, triang locos etc) along with the new stuff, it all runs on my 1960's era North Notts area layout.

I have self learned many skills with this hobby, woodwork (b***dy rough, mind !!), electrical wiring (12V & 240V), artistry, spray painting, etc etc. My son never took much to model railways (he's into r/c aeroplanes) - but my twin girls love helping with the scenery and painting figures etc. Yes, they still help now and again. The wife is sometimes "press ganged" into helping as well !!.

Wonderfull hobby.

Spot on guys,

I start a new job in 2 weeks in the middle east, which will take me away from my family for 3 out of 4 weeks a month.

To escape this reality, I have substituted my own in 4mm scale to calm me down and transport me back to a time when the world, wasn't, quite so c&*p.
