flyingsignalman
Mentioning Llandderfel in the topic on horse boxes reminded me that I had a few photos of the station taken in July 1978. Having scanned them I thought they might be of interest. 2 views of the station from the nearby road, Bala is to the left and Corwen to the right. The buildings were all dilapidated but they all survived from when the line closed in 1965 The main bulding on the up (to Corwen) platform The overbridge at the Bala end of the station The entrance from the road and the steps down to the up platform The signal box on the up platform Waiting shelter on the down platform Weighing machine office? near the entrance to the station View from by the WMO? across the forecourt to the station The goods shed, unusually with a flat roof finally a view from the bridge towards Corwen Nearly 2 years later, on 24/2/1980 the same view The signal box and the down shelter had been demolished, the bricks being used (I seem to remember) by the Bala Lake Railway for their building projects. A couple of years later I went past the site and I noticed that the station area was being developed. It looked like holiday chalets were being built. flyingsignalman
Was that when I was with you ? (I notice your dad (I think) looking out of the box) I don't think so, we were on our way to Corris for our holidays. Yes, it's my dad, most probably wondering how long I was going to be - taking these ****** photos!
Debs.
Keith, your 'railways-past' photo collection must surely deserve its own Flickr channel.
RMweb Gold big jim Posted February 3, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 3, 2012 brilliant pictures, i used to live in llandderfel with my dad, we moved there in 1988 and he moved from there in about 2002, obviously i used to play round there but the station was long gone by then, the station site had a few unfinished bungalows on there when i moved there, infact if you google street view the site you can see one of the bungalows through the trees, (search for B4401 llandderfel and look for its junction with the B4402 near palé hall) the steps to the platform are still there (as can also be seen on street view) and the platform ramp at the corwen end survived for a while, may in fact still be there in the undergrowth, i seem to remember the metal spiked railings down to the platform on the bala side was still intact too well into the 90s but i cant see them on google now as a slight aside the play park in the village had a GWR bench from the station in there for years, now long since gone
RMweb Premium Blandford1969 Posted February 3, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 3, 2012 A fascinating set of photos charting the decline of a station, I agree that a flickr stream would certainly be of interst to others.
sn
Great to see this as I took some b/w negs iaround this time that I've sine lost. Gorgeous setting for a station eh? Incredibly the space between the platforms is now filled purely by the leaf fall that has turned to compost/earth. I have a set of recent pics on flickr taken at this location. Please say that you have more and of other stations on this line.PLEASE!
oilydavid
Seeing these pictures brought back memories and I must get out my pictures.. at the age of 9... in 1956 I stayed with my parents at the Bryntirion Inn which overlooks the station. I got to know the signalmen and learnt to operate the token system with the codes and operate the signals ( with some struggling ). Every year thereafter until closure I spent a week there. In the early days the Land Cruise train used to come through on summer saturdays with a rear observation coach. On saturdays there were up around 20 trains. In the later years I got cab rides down to Llangollen and also to Dolgellau. In th early years Dukedogs occasionally came through but most of the motive power were Manors and Panniers.
