gronk the shunter
ive searched for ages to find a shot of a class 40 on the Bolton and Leigh, pretty sure this is, at Hulton sidings. lovely shot.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/rgadsdon/8513240116/ That's about a mile away from where my fictional "Over Hulton" is set! Now I must have one, and quickly! By the way what type of hoppers are they?
leopardml2341
The smaller ones look like 'Iron Ore' hoppers to me, whilst the larger I guess are the standard 21 tonners.
Michael Delamar
they used house coal concentration hoppers on that line with what looks like sand in them for the cement works at Pendlebury fold. edit, itll be Limestone from Peak forest. Michael Delamar
just wish I could find a shot of one on the steeply graded freight only Midland Langton branch in Bootle, just met another person who lived alongside the line who remembered them as regulars on the line, but again no photos. Michael Delamar
im looking into the very slight variations of yellow warning panel on the centre headcode locos, not the scottish version, but the top corners of the panel of the normal style. in the shot of Hulton sidings, that loco has the "normal" style. a curve on the top corners of the panel. but ive noticed some very slight variations. such as D371 which had sharp right angled http://www.flickr.com/photos/64518788@N05/8046370206/ and ive got a shot by Ian Krause of an unidentified loco and it has a much longer radius of the curve on the top corners of the panel. I was hoping that may lead to it being identified. the shot is in John Vaughn's book Diesels on the Midland. Michael Delamar
this is either D368 or D369 and it has slightly curved top edges but the yellow panel doesnt go right down to the bottom of the nose. 40_Stafford_m by robertcwp, on Flickr Bachmann's hand painted D369 has straight edges and the yellow doesnt reach the bottom of the headcode panel, that may just be because its hand painted and is awkward to do, but if not, it may be something to consider when renumbering the loco. Michael Delamar
This loco has a large radius to the top corners of the panel, but the yellow panel doesnt go through the lights so is slightly narrower. http://www.flickr.com/photos/67444577@N02/7257770906/
Michael Delamar
I think the loco Ive been looking for is D370, unless another had this exact style. D370 by hugh llewelyn, on Flickr
Michael Delamar
the other variation was Haymarket's D260-D266, which originally had doors and discs but had them replaced with a centre headcode around 1965, the headcode box was different as it had square corners and the yellow panel was in the style of the Baby deltics with rounded yellow edges. cant find a shot of those locos on the net at the moment. Michael Delamar
nice shot of a class 40 alongside a standard 5 and a class 24 at Patricroft in the last days of steam. only a preview you have to purchase, but some other interesting shots in there too, such as one with 2 Claytons at Kingmoor http://cumbrianrailways.zenfolio.com/p536504184/h34841F27#h34841f27 Edited March 5, 2013 by Michael Delamar
Michael Delamar
this loco D380 appears to have had its yellow panel added to and extended over the headcode box as I have seen shots of it with the more normal style where the yellow only reaches the underside of the headcode box. I also seen a shot of another loco like this when I was flicking through some old 1960s railway magazines in the club last night, will have a look next time I am there to see what loco it was. I would imagine this would be an experiment before they decided to just paint the whole front yellow. Mike, Don't know if some were altered to standard rounded panels on works visits but in the early/mid 80's they did varey a bit. Michael Delamar
Actually I think not all of the Haymarket ones had the square panel even when green. D261 later 40061 being one of those.
