Proposed Continental show

Northpoint

Recommended Posts

You may know me as the organiser of the Trent Valley American themed show.

I presume due to the success of this show over the past couple of years, I have been tasked to explore the possibility of a similar Continental themed venture.

The first thing I need is layouts.

If you are interested, please let me know.

Venue: the same as the American show, Armitage, Staffs. A central location easily accessible from the motorway network.

Time: one day, probably a Saturday, back end of this year - Oct/Nov.

Theme: any prototype except UK or American (North or South).

Possibly 2 or 3 specialist traders.

There is no huge budget for the show so there would be a need to keep expenses to a minimum.

Obviously this is the place for general discussion, but if you have a layout and would like to participate, please PM me with details.

I would envisage a small, friendly show for an audience with a specific interest where all concerned can have a good day out.

Assuming it's not the 20th October, I'll say now that I'll be coming!

No date yet. Still assessing how many layouts might be available.

Re dates, as I found with the Trent Valley show, no matter what date you choose, the doomsayers will always find a reason why you shouldn't hold it on that date! So, if it goes ahead, it wil be a case of choosing a date that seems to suit the majority and going for it!

  • 2 months later...

Firstly, sorry that this has been dormant for so long, but I have had my hands full with a certain North American show that took place last weekend.

Anyway, now that's done and dusted I can return to the proposed continental show.

I have an option on the venue for either Saturday 13th or Saturday 20th October. There have already been rumblings about the 20th not being suitable for some so maybe we should look at the 13th.

So far, we have the following possibles (judging by the PMs I have received):

Blair's Czech NG

John Edge's friend Dave Bush's Bavarian

Claude Dreyfus's Japanese

Rich (Taigatrommel) Bad Horn

Roundhouse's Smrzovka

My German effort

I spoke to John Hayward from Team Track Trading at the show last wekeend as he does continental stuff as well as US and he said he was prepared to come as a trader.

If we can rustle up a few more layouts, then no reason why we can't do something.

Nick

We cant do the 13th with Smrzovka as we are in Barrow In Furness with a different layout.

20th is still posdible at the moment though.

Ian

Ian - I'm afraid it's looking more like the 13th based on the availability of the majority.

However, the first thing is to get some layouts and traders together. I would hope to make a final decision in the next couple of weeks.

Wish you all the best with this. Efforts so far to make all-Continental exhibitions work have not had much success. This is partly due to the lesser amount of trade support available. But since you are keeping the budget down, you may be OK.

No mention in your posts of contacting the specialist societies.

Hope all goes well. We are more than happy to attend if it works out well and you do another next year (it doesnt with another show we are already doing).

I think Nick is looking for "UK resident" Continental Layouts, rather than visitors from beyond these shores!

Absolutely, Jack!

Regarding making it work, I'm working on the basis that we have run an exclusive North American themed show for 3 successive years now and have attracted both layouts, trade support and support from US manufacturers, so call me Mr Naive if you like, but I would like to think we could try the same format for European and the rest of the world!

May I humbly remind everyone that there already is an annual European Model Railway Exhibition run by the German Railway Society. It is held in the Sutton Coldfield Town Hall and this year it is on 15 September.

... There already is an annual European Model Railway Exhibition run by the German Railway Society...

But Nick's proposed event is for any nationality (except UK and the Americas) so can include more than just German, more than just European too. There are some Australian, Asian and African based layouts out there, though I don't know if their owners read this forum.

Do Irish layouts classify as suitable? Eire is not "continental" but it's not part of the UK either so the trains in the republic are foreign.

Meaning that it does not clash with Nick's show, nor does it follow closely on the heels of it, so should not suffer any detraction caused by the new event. It would also be an ideal venue to leaflet with advertising for Nick's show.

The GRS show has layouts from most of Europe present. I have seen all manor of layout types there.

I still think another show would be good fun, especially somewhere in the Midlands!

Good to see that there is as much interest. I'm trying to drum up some trade interest at the moment.

Can those that have said they are intereted in bringing layouts please confirm in the next couple of days that you will come so we can make a definite decision.

Thanks.

A sudden thought - who's coming to the member's day on Saturday? I'll be there (last I heard, I'm earmarked for making the tea). Maybe it would be an opportunity to spend a half hour in the bar discussing the finer points over a pint.
