lapford34102
Interesting original layout, surprised you don't see it "copied" as it could be a different corner filler on a layout. Have this photo from 2014 of the Wool aggregates train being run round. Stu
RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted May 14, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 14, 2020 It featured in one of CJ Freezer's plans for just the reason that you suggest. I think that a more interesting Dorchester layout could be created by considering that the LSW railway had been extended westwards to Axminster using a short stretch of the GW route towards Yeovil. That would give an LSWR/SR junction station at Dorchester South with some GWR trains either terminating there or reversing to go down to Weymouth. This "new" LSW station would need to be some way east of the real Dorchester South.

There had been a real ‘chance’ that this might have happened when the LSWR was split between the Yeovil extension and the Coastal extension westward from Dorchester. At that time Bridport was a busy port in West Dorset and a useful destination for the LSWR, the only physical issues were the hills around Askers and Marshwood Vale. The board of the LSWR narrowly voted for the Yeovil extension and the rest is history. Cheers and Stay Safe
