RMweb Premium 7013 Posted October 13, 2009 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 13, 2009 There was recently a release of a Hornby 56 with China clay CDA's in tow. Many questioned whether this was prototypical. The only 'revenue earning' CL 56 pulling CDA's was on 27th Feb 1990 when 56013 (in coal sector livery). The loco was trialled for possible use on Speedlink services to replace paired 37's. Whilst in Cornwall 56013 assisted a CL 47 that had failed on the overnight sleeper to Penzance before resuming its trials on the clay branches. The trial was not deemed unsuccessful, however CL56's were not used again on Cornish Freight. Source: An illustrated History of West Country China Clay Trains; by John Vaughan. So while the Hornby set is technically correct (assuming the loco is 56013) for one day! it is hardly a regular prototypical service.

Tim H
Actually, they did use class 56s on the Cliffe Vale Enterprise in the early 90s, but only as far west as Exeter, where the pair of 37s took over. But that train was mostly PBA "Tiger 55s", not CDAs.
