VIEWS AT SHILDON SEPTEMBER 1975

As a change I thought a few photographs from the Stockton & Darlington 150 Celebrations might be of interest. I have the procession in full as slides but I thought that these are pretty widely known to most enthusiasts. However I did make an earlier visit on the preceding Sunday when the locos were already assembled for the great day. It is these that I am posting in this thread. Being a static display I was able to wander at will amongst the exhibits enabling much closer shots than taking them from the wayside as the procession passed. However you must be the judge.

Longmoor Military Railway WD 2-10-0 "Gordon". I never saw one of these 'in the flesh' they were allocated to sheds in Scotland.

4MT 43106 again from the other side. I cannot fathom out why it sports the "Flying Scotsman" headboard.

Although not a follower of the Caledonian Railway, this was to my eyes one of the nicest of exhibits. Resplendent in the dark Caledonian blue and beautifully lined out it is 0-4-4T No. 419.

The start of it all, albeit a replica, S&D Locomotion No.1.

Remember it vividly... I was 9 and I'd never seen anything like it. It got my father interested in preserved steam and led to many years commuting to Carnforth and riding the length and breadth of the country.

I'd like to think we'd see something like it again for 2025 but I have my doubts.

I spent some time at Carnforth for the "Locomotion" event (I think 1974). We we showing the Lytham St. Annes Railway Society layout there for the week. I took quite a few photos there during breaks from operating. Perhaps I will post those later.

A few more from rthe same day.

Nice view of the outdoor exhibits. From left CR 419, 4MT 43106, 9F 92220, Fenchurch and the Stephenson valve geared LMS class 5. Sorry it was impossible to avoid getting strangers in these shots.

LMS 4767. This has outside Stephenson's valve gear. I believe that it was named "George Stepenson" at this event

This has brought back a lot of memories - I was 26 then working near Lincoln and went up to Shildon for the weekend. I spent a very happy time wandering round, looking at the exhibits and taking photos. I couldn't stay for the procession, but I know that dad did and I now have his slides of that.

I was taken along at the tender age of 7 and seem to remember a fine time.

Am I correct in a memory of four A4s lined up (and maybe in steam)? I think there were two in garter blue, one in silver with one in BR green (again a fuzzy memory but possibly Mallard and Sir Nigel in blue, Peregine in silver and Union of South Africa in green)?

I maybe completely wrong though...

Mallard and Sir Nigel in blue - "Silver Link" (Bittern) in the grey livery and Union of South Africa in green.

I wish I'd been old enough to have seen that...

There was only the one A4 in the Shildon procession, that was "Sir Nigel" in garter blue. I wish the RTR manufactures of blue A4s would take note of the true colour; most of them are way off the mark, especially the Bachman offering.

"Silver Link" (Bittern) spent some time at NRM. I photgraphed it there.

I think you're getting confused with the 50th anniversary of Mallard's run in 1988. That was at the NRM.

Not wishing to overly hijack Arthur's thread and not the best photo but this was it:

No. 9 may have turned up later, I don't recall. I was much less involved by then having gone off to University.

Southern Railway S15 4-6-0 No. 841, handsomely decked in Southern Livery.post-6751-12610615414097_thumb.jpg

Under cover was the NER H Class (LNER Y7) carrying the early Worsdell livery.

post-6751-12610615446069_thumb.jpg

"Sir Nigel" in Garter Blue livery. This was the post war condition with cutaway valences and with Stainless Steel numbers and letters. I remember them well. They usually whistled as the entered Central from Edinburgh. We all then knew what to expect arriving over the King Edward Bridge - but which one?

post-6751-12610615477728_thumb.jpg

Gresley D49 (though designed at Darlington) 4-4-0 "Morayshire" in LNER Green Livery. I never saw any in this condition, they were usually dirty black. In fact I never saw this engine in 'real life' as it hid in Scotland. I saw most of its kinfolk and all of the Hunts.

post-6751-12610615514582_thumb.jpg

Another shot of "Sir Nigel".

post-6751-12610615549553_thumb.jpg

Midland Compound 4-4-0 No. 1000 in crimson lake livery. I did see some of these in red at York. No. 1023 was producing the blackest smoke that I have ever seen!

post-6751-12610615586137_thumb.jpg

Great Northern 4-4-2 "Henry Oakley" in the GNR green livery.

The weather I remember was glorious on the Sunday cavalcade day........but the Saturday was dire....rained all day as I seem to remember.

Most of the photos must have been taken on the Sunday then, were you allowed in to the works on cavalcade day..??

Bob.

It was the Sunday prior to the big day i.e one week before. Most of the exhibits were already there.

Thanks for the fine pic and it does seem I was mistaken on the date... But, I wasn't at the NRM in '88!

I was sure it was Shildon.

Maybe it was Bold in '79?

NATIONAL RAILWAY MUESUM YORK

Following the discussion about the A4s in there various guises this is "Bittern" masquerading as "Silver Link". I made a complete hash of the exposures on this film. It was a film that I had not used before but this one wasn't too bad.

I was there! It was an amzing sight for a 15 year old who hardly remembered real steam at all. I went with my Dad and brother. I still have the T shirt somewhere but it is probably well past it's best now! Thanks for bringing back some happy memories. Many years later I spend time modelling with a certain Malcolm Crawley, who was on the footplate of one of the locos in the cavalcade. Small world!

It looks like this topic has stirred a lot of memories. If you twist my arm I can post photos of the cavalcade itself. Please let me know though it will take a bit of effort to scan them then reduce the pixel count to something more reasonable. I alway scan at high resolution but RMWEB prefers a total of 60-100kbs.

I have a set of photos of the cavalcade, Arthur, although I'm sure you'd be hailed as a hero for scanning and posting yours.

I'm intrigued by this recollection of Bittern/Silver Link other than at the NRM - I thought it was only displayed for the 50th anniversary of the record breaking run and then went back to wherever it had been in store all that time. Good photo of yours and showing the NRM before some vandal ripped out the other turntable.

Until last year that visit was the only time I'd seen Bittern, so I'd never actually seen it with its real identity.

THE S&D 150 CAVALADE

After I took the static photos at Shildon I was back one week later to witness the procession from Shildon. This was a beautifully sunny day, barely a cloud in the sky. I have decided that I will post at least some of my photos of this event no doubt stirring the memories of others that were also there.

We parked in a farmer's field, no doubt he make a lot of cash from this, but whatever it cost it was worth every penny. We were on the south side of the line and took full benefit from the sun. Those who actually paid for a seat in the grandstand who were looking into the sun and not ideally placed for photography. As you can see this was shirts off weather that fellow in the foreground must have gone home with quite a suntan.

post-6751-12615148611764_thumb.jpg

First in the procession was the replica of LOCOMOTION No.1. Seeing that valve gear moving up and down was quite something. Wonder who the fellow was in the chaldon waggon was and how he got to ride in it?

post-6751-12615148678082_thumb.jpg

Next was NCB Hunslet 0-6-0T, immaculate in it's black livery.

post-6751-12615148720424_thumb.jpg

LMS Class 5 now doubt early in the prceesion due to being very recently named "George Stephenson". It had the experimental outside Stephenson's valve gear which was not applied to any others of the class.

post-6751-12615148761027_thumb.jpg

NER Class T2 (LNER Q6), rescued and restored by the NELPG. It has the NER lined black livery.post-6751-12615148798634_thumb.jpg

NER Class P3 (LNER J27). This one was built as a superheated version by the LNER. The superheater was later removed. Like the T2 it has the lined black livery.

post-6751-12615148836315_thumb.jpg

Another loco rescued and restored by the NELPG LNER K1 2-6-0 This one was built by BR and originally had the BR lined black livery. Never having had the number without the '6' prefix it does nevertheless look very handsome in LNER Green.
