That GWR livery is one that is well designed and will sit on just about anything and look quite good

The pictures make it look much better than it is in real life, but an Oxfordshire bus operator has identified a possible counterexample.

They do look good I did put them up for sale but I like the 156s better than 150 and 158 so decided to keep them and the 350 and put them in GWR Livery.

The 156s look great! I know how you feel as I did a green J39 for a friend and wanted to keep it.

Puts me in mind of those Postman Pat and Pound Puppies sets Hornby did in the 80's...

...mindyou, I remember seeing pics of an actual tram in America a few years ago, covered in My Little Pony pics, with much disgusted comments from tram enthusiasts underneath. My youngest foster-daughter however loved it :)

Fictitious ‘MK6’ Intercity Sleeper Support coach. I lost some of the photos of this project, which I had previously posted. Apologies to those who have seen it before. But the other day I found 30+ plain white Hornby MK4 DVT body shells that I’d forgotten about and I’m going to build a rake of MK6 sleepers to go with this coach. That’s the plan in amongst loads of other jobs. All fitted with BT10 bogies.

So this is the rough cutting plan

But the biggest modification is removing the ends and cutting longitudinally along the roof and inserting a 5mm wide strip, to remove that horrible tapered body side profile that the MK4s have. Quite a challenge.

Did this one without changing the profile. Wish that I had as it is noticeable on such a long vehicle. Also don’t like the BT41B/C bogies. Should have shortened it but liked the double door look in the middle. Ah just needs more work. As my school reports frequently stated….”Could do better!”😂

A Neverwazza in more ways than one.  GM-EMD tried to create more powerful locomotives by creating double engined monsters, the DD35 was the first and they followed it up with a DD40 variant.

Whilst Union Pacific took the DD40 variant with wide cabs, Athearn in their blue box range took a punt and made a standard cab DD40 model.

Now, if you had gone up to your local GM-EMD sales rep and said I would like some DD40's with standard cabs please, no doubt after blowing the dust off the catalogue, he would have been happy to sell you one but they never did and the massive Athearn model remained a Neverwazza, didn't stop them producing them in dozens of fictional liveries though.

So, here is mine!

Complete strip down, repaint, new cab and nose plus SP detailing parts.

SP did have the earlier DD35 model in cabless form but they were very much not a success so they would never have bought any of these, but what if...?

Since they were introduced I’ve bought 8 of the superb Dapol class 68s…..so far.

Then when the bodies became available as spares and inspired by some amazingly examples of fictitious Class 68 liveries by Ben’s Resprays and Rainbow Railways, I have had a go at a few myself.

The first one was a Caledonian 68, in the current company livery, which I did as a one off commission for a good friend.

The next is this….a DB (DBAG) Class 268. Fictitious loco and fictitious livery. 268 001-4.

Having spent many years filming DB railways and having a couple of ACME models HO scale DB Class 245s, I based it one those.
As can be seen it is still in gloss finish after decals were applied but eventually it’ll be in satin for an ex works job.

A steeplechaser? Does it jump about a lot, then?

Doncaster named its steeds after flat racers.

Not all of them were named after racers at Doncaster. Other winners also were included. I think some from Newmarket and the Derby.

As she is "new build" the idea was to name it after a more famous racehorse. So it opened up the options. The other possibility is Frankel - which never lost a race, but did race at Newmarket where other engines were named after winners.

The LNER didn't seem to favour Doncaster winners, but I think the only National Hunt winner to be honoured was Brown Jack. I am sure, however, that Brown Jack wasn't chosen because he won the Champion Hurdle in 1928, but because he won the Queen Alexandra Stakes (a 2¾ mile flat race held at Royal Ascot) for six years in a row between 1929 and 1934. When the locomotive was built in 1935, Brown Jack was one of the best-known racehorses in the country. Perhaps not quite the best known, since Bahram (later commemorated by a Peppercorn A2) had won the Triple Crown that year (a rare feat, only repeated four times since then), and Golden Miller had won the Cheltenham Gold Cup for a fourth successive year (and would win again in 1936), and had achieved the unique double (still not repeated) of winning both the Gold Cup and the Grand National in the same year (1934). But the LNER didn't name horses after jumpers, and as far as I know, Golden Miller has never had a locomotive named after him.

Naming a fictional LNER locomotive after a Grand National winner seems as wrong to me as giving it a copper chimney cap would seem to someone else.

Hi Grizz,

Have to say that the DB livery looks absolutely lovely on the 68.  To my eyes it beats all the actual 68 liveries, pity DB in the UK did not have any........

Modelling wise, it is a really great, crisp paint job, very impressed. Glad you had the inspiration to do it in the first place.

Cheers

I guess this qualifies for this thread too...   Previously seen on my APT detailing thread, here's D832 in RTC red/blue, featuring my interpretation of its proposed modifications for APT traction testing.  This was my first attempt at a) loco modifications, b) painting a model "properly".  Still haven't weathered it though. 😉

Hi 25kV,

This is absolutely bonkers and brilliant all in one! I love it. I guess the RTC is a rich source of "what if's", so many ideas and possibilities. I like your lateral thinking though, and the APT bogies kind of suits the Warship.

Modelling wise, it is a lovely kit bash, and a real neat job of the livery elements. A very nice model indeed, in fact very impressive work.

And if you get bored of it in RTC livery, you could always paint it GWR Cucumber Green with big cast GWR logo (like on the 43 power cars) and run it out of Paddington 😁😉. No only joking, honestly.....

Cheers
