Liverpool Docks

Recommended Posts

before the coal loader was built they used to stock pile the coal behind my nan's house which was on the dock estate and has been demolished and incorporated into the estate.

when I was a kid in the late 80s we would play in the back alleys there and coal dust would blow over all the kids and we would come back filthy. it would sting when it got in your eyes.

I'm going to be adding quite a few photos to this thread (and others, and creating yet more) over the next few weeks, so bear with me on a couple of possible problems

1 - They won't necessarily be chronological

2 - I may end up reposting the same images again !

Please bear in mind these are scanned by Max Spielmann and are not always of the best quality (and the originals are not always of the best quality !)

Thank you very much, Dave, for taking the time to put all these photo up.

I think the 60 Class was the only class that I never saw their commissioning or decommissioning. I mean I paid visits to the UK throughout the time but never saw one, ever.

Best, Pete.

can you remind me again where this bit is/was?

because if its on the stretch of Regent road I think it is, east side of what was north mersey goods yard then I dont think it carried the overhead as that was on the west side of the yard.

It's at the North end of the yard, at Shore Road, where the line swings back in again towards Seaforth - however I think you may be right, it probably isn't the overhead, but it would have been pretty close to it.

Another day, another dollar 57/0

I hope these pictures convey how absolutely superb it was to be able to wander around these trains and photograph them, close up, I was destroyed when the permits were removed, especially as I missed out by a few weeks on getting another 12 month one, however, still plenty to come. The only time any of the drivers complained was one Scottish driver who had a go at me, the security and shunters soon put him right though, a few were ambivalent but most were very friendly, cab rides around the system were frequently offered and occasionally taken up - I wanted to photograph the trains so a catch-22 situation. A big thank-you to all the guys who made this a very special time, most of their names have come and gone from my memory sadly.

Cheers for posting these, Beast.

The "Gypsum Queen" being a sort of 'memorial locomotive' was interesting - something I didn't know.

As you said at the start, changes after 9/11 & the introduction of, inter alia, the ISPS Code, have meant that it's now so difficult to record what's going on. FWIW, it's the same across much of the world's ports now :(

Cheers

Some great sets of photos. What's an ISPS permit?

A few years ago when the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board was taken private I had to sell a few shares that my grandfather (who lived in Birkenhead) had bought back in the 1890's. They had a final Shareholders meeting to sort the formalities out and I noticed that the meetinhg was going to take place inside the docks. I decided to attend aand had a wonderful time during a boring meeting wtching the rail traffic out of the window from the 1st floor meeting room. The traffic was much more interesting than the meeting but it was a great opportunity to legally get inside the docks complex.

Rather ironically, these days I tend to find that the most laid back ports when it comes to photography are of the military variety (Army or Navy run, USA excepted), with commercial port security/paranoia rivalling what you could find behind the iron curtain pre 1989. The only difference being the substitution of rifles with hi-vis vests and that it's no longer possible to bribe the (NKVD-esque) modern security guards with Grants whisky or Levi jeans.
