Help Needed Regarding Ballasting.

Some of them are just a gimmick but some are very good, just seems the one I have doesn't work or I am doing something wrong - probably the later lol :D

Looking at your video of you using the ballast spreader, I would say you are moving it much too fast.

Hey smokebox, thanks for that advice but unfortunately I have tried doing it slower and there is still no joy. I have tried every speed possible, pushing and pulling and even shaking it as I go along but none seem to work properly....

Thanks though, Oli

Hello everyone, I have been doing some ballasting and some small scenic work on my practice plank recently and have been trying various techniques, methods and products...

One question I wanted to ask was about the colour of ballast changing significantly. When I first lay the ballast it is a light grey colour just like seen in the previous pictures I have posted but then once glued it turns a very dark grey colour. Now I would expect the ballast to turn a darker colour to start with because it is absorbing the water sprayed on it and the wet glue but then surely after a week it still shouldn't be this colour!? I bought light grey ballasting expecting it to be light grey, not a very dark 'damp' grey.

I have seen a video by Everard Junction called "How to ballast" and he mentions that the ballast does darken slightly but when he shows you a section that he has ballasted and has been glued and now dried it still looks a light grey and not too dis-similar to the ballast he is currently applying that is dry.

Someone please help and explain to me why my ballast is turning such a dark colour - I really don't like the look of it and am now considering buying a much lighter colour ballast like white or 'sandy'.

Cheers, Oli :D

Try using Copiedex for gluing the ballast down ,i have used it and the colour stay's the same,i have now moved on to using F41 Carpet glue and works very well.

Cheers Darren, did you mean Copydex? Can't find any glue called Copiedex...

Seems quite expensive though compared to PVA. I'm not sure if it is the glue that is causing the ballast to darken so much - I think it may be something to do with the water or the actual ballast I am using.

What is that method some people use to do with soaking the ballast in a bowl of water? Or something like that, would this help? Because I didn't do anything like that - I just used it straight from the bag - any advice on this technique guys...?

Cheers, Oli

Personally I don't worry about the colour change as I weather it anyway.

To be honest I don't think weathering is going to help or change the fact that the ballast is almost black coloured.

I have tried taking a picture but the camera doesn't really pick up the different colours so here are some links demonstrating a few things... :

a. What I start off with (colour wise) = http://www.ehattons....tockDetail.aspx

b. What I end up with when glued (colour wise) = http://www.ehattons....tockDetail.aspx

c. What I would like to end up with (colour wise) = http://www.ehattons....tockDetail.aspx

d. What I am going to buy to try and achieve a lighter colour = http://www.ehattons....tockDetail.aspx and http://www.ehattons....tockDetail.aspx

Thanks, Oli :D
