Hi all,

Quick question - I want to renumber the Bachmann split box 45053 to something else (preferably not a namer.Hopefully a Bristol /cardiff/laira based example and mainly early 80s.

I wonder if someone has the allocations from early 80s and can give me the lists or some examples. Come to think of it I,m not sure laira had any 45s by this point ? I know the 46s left there in 1980 .....

Any help appreciated.

As far as I know the Western Region never had any Class 45s or 46s allocated after the 46s left Laira in 1980.

That said I saw 45036, 45042, 45101, 45105, 45110, 45115, 45132, 46037 and 46047 at Exeter on one day in 1984 and 45003, 45105, 45110 and 45121 on one day in 1985 so regardless of the allocation they were still working to Plymouth and Paignton.

The problem you have got is that by the summer of 1979 there were only eleven 45/0s and four 45/1s still with split boxes. Give me about an hour and I can find out when these had the noses ends redone.

Hi Rob,

My Summer 1982 Motive power pocket book states all 46's had moved (at least on paper) to Gateshead, the 45'1s where all based at Toton and the 0's where spread between Ti (Tinsley) and TO (Toton).

The 1981 Locoshed has 46's no. 006, 007, 010, 018, 020, 021 and 022 based at Laira with the rest at Gateshead.

It is worth looking at websites such as Sixbells Junction to see what variety was around during the times you want to model, or a visit to flickr or just a google search to the areas is a start.

hope this makes sense, good luck,

Ian

Okay then not a perfect answer but here goes:

45025, 45027, 45047, 45053 and 45061 were all withdrawn with split headcode boxes. 45053 was in store at Crewe from 1980 November 1981 to 1983 when it was officially withdrawn. So the last split headcode 45s in traffic were 45061 which lasted until August 1981 and 45053. 45053 was not actually cut up until 1988.

45054 and 45062 were done with plain nose ends in Sept 1979. 45013 was done by May 1980. 45017, 45051 and 45057 were done between 1980 and 1981.

The 45/1s were all done by August 1982 (going by photos) and they probably all had new noses by some time in 1981 at the latest.

Therefore the split headcode box peaks still around from 1980 to 1982 were 45017, 45025, 45027, 45047, 45051, 45053, 45057, 45061, 45120, 45127, 45132 and 45150.

I had a quick look through my pictures (taken from Jan 1980) and the only split box I have found so far

in my W.R. pictures is 45051 which backs up Floods more comprehensive reply,

Passing through the carriage wash at Bristol West is 45051 on its way with ECS to Malago Vale C.S., 11/2/80

Flood,

Slight correction 45053 was still in service until at least June 1981 (and working NE-SW trains)

At York 18th April 1981

And was still in the scrap lines at Crewe 13 October 1985

Thanks folks . When you say done flood you mean sealed over noses ?

I see that '053 would still be appropriate but I like to change the chunky Bachmann numbers anyway so maybe '051 as we have WR proof there !

Thanks to Derek for the clarification, I got my information from Marsden's BR Locomotive Numbering book. Just goes to show that you should always check your sources.

Yes Rob, when I say "done" I do mean them having the plain noses with marker lights.

Re your post Andy I had heard the same about 45053s boxes going onto 45060 but I was corrected by a member of the local railway club who knows Mike Jacob. As far as I can remember the boxes were fabricated at Toton when the loco was restored there in 1987 (ducks head to receive flak for having an incorrect memory).

just as an aside, back in the early 70s we spotters had a slightly different set of descriptions for the peaks

one to tenners

box headcode

split headcode

centre headcode

in our system, split headcode meant a centre headcode divided by a bar and we didn't bother that 45s and 46s were different

D9 was an oddity as were the few that had different styles at each end
