You picked Dawlish Jim, that location being a while away from Plymouth or Paignton, which is the nearest starting point of loco hauled train passing through. Locos wuld have warmed up and displayed fairly clean exhausts - particularly on the bright and warm sunny day. I'd wager that many of those 50s, having just been started up on Laira or Old Oak, wouldn't have had such a clean exhaust, particularly of it was cold.
