Steadfast
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has any recollections of the last Devon class 101s? I've seen some some photos online of both 2 and 3 car 101s in blue and grey around Exeter and Plymouth in the early 1990s. Does anyone have records of which vehicles comprised the sets, and even better, any photos of them? Any help would be hugely appreciated! jo
Pugsley
If no-one responds in the meantime, I've got that kind of info at home and will dig it out tonight.
Rivercider
I had stopped taking railway photos in 1986, but occasionally still took my camera on a day out, unfortunately I took no notes of this day, A 2 car class 101 set and a single power car wait for their next working at Exmouth 13/7/88. - edit, - actually that looks like a hybrid 2 car set, only the middle car looks like a met-cam cheers
Pugsley
In 1991 you had the following 3 car 101's: 825 53165 59118 51246 826 53223 59561 52053 827 53212 59130 51223 828 51936 59386 52051 829 51500 59093 53157 and two car: 860 51181 51530 861 51205 51512 862 51179 51570 870 53200 53638 871 53256 53639 872 51184 53646 873 53204 53637 874 53315 53330 875 51219 53642 876 51231 53189 877 51234 53163 878 51241 53260 879 51435 52059 I've got nothing then until 1994, when the sole survivor was: 101842 53314 59110 53327 HTH
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted November 14, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 14, 2012 Hi Jo - have you seen this image of P874 on Martin Loader's site? Same site has hybrid 101/108 P872
Steadfast
Thanks everyone for the replies, maybe I should've bought a 108 as well as the 101... Martin, that list is exactly what I'm after, thank you so much. Presumably they were all blue grey? Hi Jo - have you seen this image of P874 on Martin Loader's site? Same site has hybrid 101/108 P872 Hi Rich, yes I have thanks, his site is a gold mine of interesting stuff, one of my regular visits! Thanks again, jo
Pugsley
Martin, that list is exactly what I'm after, thank you so much. Presumably they were all blue grey? No problem. I'll double check tonight, but AFAIK they were all blue and grey.
Guest stuartp
I vaguely recall a Regional Railways calender of about 1992-ish which had a photo of a 101 on (I think) the Barnstaple branch in RR livery. it was a 'train lost in the landscape' shot so could have been seriously retouched though. Pugsley
Jo, in 1991 they were all blue and grey, but in1 994, 101842 was in NSE livery. HTH

Steadfast
Thanks everyone for all the information and pictures, I'm definitely a big step closer to backdating the layout to the Swallow era. Just waiting on the package to arrive from Sheffield to get cracking on the 101, now I have the information to get going with it Thanks again jo
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted November 15, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 15, 2012 My thanks also for those images, Chris - I'll probably 'need' a 101 for my North Devon layout at some stage, so useful stuff Can anyone tell me what the 'protuberance' is by the headcode box on P874? It looks like a horn....
RMweb Premium Gary H Posted November 16, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 16, 2012 Lovely old pictures, i never tire of stuff like this. Im intrigued to know what were the 2 boys on the footbridge at Par pointing their camera's at ??
RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted November 16, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 16, 2012 Sadly I have no picture to confirm this, nor unit number, but I recall an NSE liveried 101 crossing the Royal Albert Bridge in either 1996 or 1997 - I was at college in Devon at the time so could not have been any earlier. dmustu
Can anyone tell me what the 'protuberance' is by the headcode box on P874? It looks like a horn.... It looks like a mounting for a radio ariel. I suspect that P874 was based in east anglia somewhere before being transfered to the west country, several branch lines around the anglia area (i'm not familiar with the lie of the land round that part of the world, so cant be more specific) were converted to RETB signalling in the early 80s, and many dmu's operating around that area were fitted with quite large ariel's to work with RETB signalling. 43179
Some lovely shots there - The Regional railways Unit was 101680 - I saw it on the Plymouth - Gunnislake several times in 1992 The NSE unit 101843 (or L842) - is my favourite DMU, and is the very devil to model, as it had its aluminium window frames painted NSE blue, plus most of its roof vents were removed/plated over - the black window surrounds changed from round to square corners too . I remember travelling all the way from Falmouth Docks to 'The Dell' , in first class! And that's why my model of it still isn't finished - 6 years and counting! Will the new Farish 101 ever appear in NSE?? Jon
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted November 20, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 20, 2012 101842 53314 59110 53327 As NKC's photo shows 101842 ended its days in NSE livery as a 2-car with 59110 being dumped at Long Rock for some time before being towed away. IIRC that was the last 101 working in the south west and was a regular on th St. Ives branch at the time.
43179
with 59110 being dumped at Long Rock for some time before being towed away. Aha!! - Interesting stuff - I always wondered what happened to its centre car - are there any pictures of 59110 at Long Rock, or was it hidden? RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted November 21, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 21, 2012 I don't have any pictures, sorry, but it was parked (with the end gangways open to the weather!) more or less where the 100t tankers have been dumped for years opposite the heliport (R.I.P.)
