Molinnis - Present Day Cornwall in N

Revolution Ben

Recommended Posts

The layout has emerged from hibernation ready for the Cambridge (31A) show at Sawston Village College CB22 3BP on Saturday 18th April. The venue is close to the M11. south of Cambridge. The Citi 7 bus runs every 20 minutes from Cambridge Station to Sawston.

Some new rolling stock inspired from pictures of the "railways of cornwall" pages from RMweb. A class 153 in London Midland livery currently seen on some branch lines. The other is the summer loco hauled train using the sleeper rolling stock. Currently 3 coaches - need a 4th - likely to go for the TGS when Dapol release it - not 100% accurate and Rule 1 will apply. The other issue is coupling up the locomotive on the curved tracks in the fiddle yard.

Some pictures taken at todays Cambridge 31A exhibition at Sawston Village College. Layout generally behaved itself - a few items of stock need checking for the layout's next out on 11 July at Hoddesdon.

As you can see, there were a number of unusual visitors. By the way there is a London Midland livery Class 153 on the Cornish branches at present - see the railways of Cornwall pages for pictures.

Hi Nick, Paul,

The Bachmann/farish model is the standard Voyager, correctly a 4-coach train.

The 5-car Super Voyagers were only done by Dapol, and was sold as a 4-car box set with extra fifth car available separately.  The spotting point (apart from the number of vehicles) are the bogies, which have unusual inside bearing axles on a standard Voyager.

cheers

Ben A.

And now for something completely different!

My Bank Holiday project has nothing to do with Molinnis, N Gauge or the railways of Cornwall.

At the request of the local Norris Museum in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, I have made a representation of one of the barges that used to operate on the River Ouse. It was the coming of the railways in the 1840's that caused most the river traffic to end. The museum wanted something to go with a talk they do on the history of the town.

The barge is to 4mm scale and is made from foam board and card with added plastic details. It is by no means an exact copy, but is meant as a prototype for something that children can make at a history day being held in July. The pole at the front is how a group of barges were linked together, often 4-5 at a time. Barges were usually pulled by horses and a sail was used if the wind was right.

I have included it on the forum as an example of how modellers can use their skills in the wider community, and who knows encourage future modellers.

Hi Ben

The Riverport Discovery Day is on 25th July in the Corn Exchange, although there are other events around the town the same day. . The aim is to make a diorama of the St Ives Quay, with the kids in a day! It is a shame there were never any railway tracks along the quay.

Regards

Nick

Some pictures taken at the Hoddesdon Show today.

First outing on the layout (following repairs by Paul) of FGW 150 and works units. Also some of the first Dapol 66's which have been living in the stock box for some time also saw daylight.

Man thanks to Alan to helping me out (refer picture of confused operator!)

Regards

Nick

It's been a year since I posted anything on the layout.

The layout is still alive and looking forward to a trip to the N Gauge Show in September.

There was a visit from Chris Nevard this week, taking photos for a Model Rail article coming soon. The sample pictures look great, but you will have to wait to see them. The layout / backscene interface has worked well.

Interesting weekend at TINGS. The controller played up and hopefully a new one will be wired up for the next outing in Colchester in October.

Thanks to all those who stopped for a chat and for all the kind comments.

For those who are fed up with buses in the bridge photos, here is something different....

Molinnis will be at the N gauge society AGM this Saturday in Horsham.

Could be the layout's last public appearance unless some new invites arrive.

If anyone would like to take over the layout, please send me a PM.

Regards

A good day at the Biggleswade show today. Many thanks to all at EBMRS for all their hard work in putting on a great event.

Fellow N Gauge member Jonathan brought along his own Voyager so we had Cross Country trains meets on the layout for the first time.

Some photos taken during the day - and yes the pacer did not like the curved points at the entrance to the fiddle yard. Has anyone tried them around the Peco Setrack curved points?

Regards

All

Molinnis will be at the Newbury Model Railway Exhibition this Saturday 26 October. The exhibition is at St Bartholomews School, Buckingham Road, Newbury RG14 6JP. The show is open 10.00 to 16.30.

This will be the layouts last appearance. The need to start building something new is getting strong. The rubbish skip awaits unless anyone wants to the buy the layout.

It’ll be a shame the layout isn’t going to anymore shows. Would love to have seen it.
