Saturday 24 November was the last Saturday when engineering works meant some services to/from Felixstowe were diverted over the Fens (ie Ipswich -> Haughley Junction -> Chippenham Junction ->Ely -> March -> Peterborough or reverse).

66118 had worked the Ipswich / Hams Hall intermodal most of the week and as it was a recent repaint into DBS livery I kept my fingers crossed it would manage through to Saturday, sadly this was not the case, overnight on Thursday it went to Bescot and then off to Westbury, however it was replaced by 66152, one of the other 3 (66097 / 66101, 66118 and 66152) in DBS livery, so off I went to catch it on the Fens.

Despite the weather not being sunny I was amazed to find that trains were still running so here's a selection of pictures from the day (not always the best one has been chosen I'm afraid, for speed, and they are as shot, unretouched and not sharpened - over use of which is becoming more common amongst both books and magazines these days)

The morning started foggy and I was expecting the 66152 shot to be ruined by the weather however the fog vanished very quickly from around 08:00

I've only shown the odd 170 and 158 shot, I did photograph everything that passed.

What a lovely variety of traction! The Freightliner 66 coming out of the mist on containers is fantastic, and gives the whole train an intriguing look.

Thanks.

I was torn between the dramatic and wanting to get a clean shot (of 66152), in the end I was happy with the shot.

I forgot to say, there were a lot of friendly drivers around yesterday, waving and whistling, so if any of them read this and want a high resolution digital copy of their train then drop me a line, letting me know which train (I photographed everything between 07:30 and 15:30) and I will be happy to oblige.

Dave

Great shots - really moody. Thanks for posting.

A couple of questions: Do you (or anyone) know why GBRf 66737 has two large digits? It reminds me of the numbering of Spanish locomotives. It is something they are planning to apply to all their locomotives in time - I rather like it.

Also, is the Ely-Peak Forest stone train a new sevice? Were you able to make any kind of notes of the different wagons? Stone trains in East Anglia seem to be an interesting mix of wagons; the Norwich-Mountsorrel trains also seem to have quite varied consists!

cheers

Ben A.

I believe they ran out of Fox transfers and had to make do with some letraset ...

(Seriously - I don't know but none of the later repaints have been done like it, so I'm assuming it was a trial which has not been adopted)

Ely / Peak Forest normally runs during the week but for some reason it ran on Saturday, I assume one of the loads didn't make it. I photographed most/all of the wagons so I'll post the pictures tonight (I have to get down from an 8' ladder and run down the road to get a clear shot of the wagons, by the time I've done that a few have already passed but I think I got them all, as I missed the first few when it was going in and the first few when coming out but those "fews" were at each end of the train - it can't use the Ely avoider so the train wasn't turned.

Hope you had a bottomless flask of coffee.

It's not too cold yet, it was only 0 for the first couple of hours and then it got to 3deg, so I took my coat off and basked in the warmth, but I did have a big flask of coffee with me to keep me going - in all ways.

I've a hazy reccollection of the story, I have a feeling it was named as a birthday present for the wife of a GBRf employee (director?) - and the big numbers are (were?) the relevant age on the day...

Are you sure L73/M84 were not totally different rakes, far fewer of the JRA in the return leg looking at the train shot?

Did you catch any new Freightliner FWA (aka Shortliner) sets out?

Great pics though. :)

Sounds feasible

I failed to get most of the return train, nearly falling off the ladder (I stand on the last rung of the large ladder in the photo above) but I was pretty certain it's the same train.

I must check my photos, I didn't even notice 737 until I posted it on here !

Great pics though. :)

Thanks.

I do like the way you cover every angle.

It's interesting to see how people get their shots, thank you for this.

I'm glad to see you've put up a Risk Assessment Form above the telephone - "BEWARE TRAINS"(?) :mosking:

You'll not make many friends having the ladders hard up against traffic signals like that Dave. Between that and being so close to the barriers.

I'd get myself further back and away from the road for safety's sake.

Very nice (and atmospheric) photos Beast, but a testament to the dismal monotony of Britain's rail system today.

The ladders are actually several feet away (about 10) from the traffic signals, but I guess that's lost in either the photo or the understanding. If they actually were next to the signals it would prove very difficult to take photos as the hood would block the view and simply looking at the photos shows the error of the statement.

I'm surprised it only took 6 months for you to notice it - very strange, the cynical part of me thinks there's more to this than meets the eye.

Well, it's not a method I see among photographers elsewhere Dave. Just doesn't look a particularly sensible use of ladders, bearing in mind the proximity to hazards. Don't be surprised if a passing MOM or even a traffic bobby where to question it if they were passing by. Looks like the sort of thing that makes folks nervous in these H&S obsessed times. It's only advice and you're the guy who makes the choice but justbe aware, that's all.

I'm worried about you Dave - you've got an obsession with ladders, perhaps you need to get a pair and get out more, then you will see what photographers do these days.

Thanks to "D" for the screen shot.

(PS - if you actually kept up rather than trying to provoke trouble, you would know that I've already spoken to the police, but don't let that stop you from making anything up - you're in good company on "the other place")

not a criticism but some of the images look a bit blocky, can see it on the rails, I wouldnt know if its the camera or the image size, it made me wonder if it was my end.

They've been resized and reduced in quality Mike.
