southwestern
Ladies and gentlemen. I would like a class 27 in early BR blue...with sound. Olivias trains do a package which I can afford. Has anyone purchased this recently?? How was the sound? I am new to dcc and sound...so looking for a lot of guidance at the moment. Many thanks. gridwatcher
I would recommend any of the 27s from Howes, South West Digital or Legomanbiffo. We have 27s by all three. They are all good and all slightly different. Easily installed too.
RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted November 27, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 27, 2012 Hi there Horses for courses I guess We use almost exclusively Howes sound files - no connection other than very satisfied customer See - 4.13 onwards for Class 27 Cheers Phil
kevpeo
A poor video here of the v3.5 Olivia's 27 - It may not be the current one though! HTH, Kev.

In your considerations maybe you should take Digitrain's ZIMO Class 27 into account. No doubt you will have seen the price of ESU alternatives, the ZIMO MX644 with preloaded sound of your choice is £72.50. Good luck, Paul

Alcanman
Hi, I've also been looking at sound fitted 27s since seeing and being very impressed with the sound on Loch Dour recently at the Newcastle Exhibition. As a dcc sound novice, I feel a bit reluctant to try installations myself in case I mess up the work. This had led me to think that Olivia's might be the best option as they sell locos which have been dcc sound fitted by them, and, therefore, if something goes wrong, they would fix it. Do any of the other dcc sound suppliers offer a similar service or do you have to send off your loco to them to have the sound decoder fitted? I have a Bachmann 25 and 37 with factory fitted sound which I'm reasonably happy with, but I'm looking to expand my fleet of locos. Thanks, Mal

Thanks, Mal Mal, I have never dealt with Olivia's but they have been around for some years now and have probably progressed as have all the suppliers. There are others who do this sort of thing and if back up service is important to you then the path of RTR is for you and you have been directed to the principal suppliers already. Fitting your own chips is not too difficult really and if you already have a loco and want to add sound then self fit or your local sound chip dealer is the best bet. In general, any chip fitter has to be responsible for the work that he has done but Olivia's, SWD and Howes actually write and sell their own projects so if you fit, or have fitted, a sound decoder bought from them and the sounds don't work, then the supplier of the chip will help you. If the decoder doesn't work then the fitter has to help you. It is far easier to be a chip fitter than a sound project compiler!
dasatcopthorne
I personally find the Legomanbiffo sounds (DC Kits) the best I've heard so far. You can find a video on Youtube by searching under legomanbiffo. Fit a 23mm round speaker in its own enclosure in the fuel tank. You will need to cut a bit out of the inside of the tank after gluing the two halves together. Cheers Dave Smith
class"66"
Had some realy good Howes sound chips,in the last few months....
Alcanman
Thanks for the replies. I think I'll stick with RTR for now, as I'm not confident with doing installations myself. As I can get the full package ie. loco with sound chip fitted from Olivias, I'll probably try them. However, I'm very impressed with the videos of locos fitted with sound from Legomanbiffo files. Lady_Ava_Hay
There is nothing to prevent you from buying and trying the Olivia's offering and then, subject to some provisos which have not really been covered so far, having the chip re-blown with fresh sounds from another supplier. Postage to and fro is another issue since you have expressed a desire not to install (or remove) decoders yourself. Thus the loco will need to be sent. This can be advantageous as the synching of the loco to its sounds is all part of the installation process

ruston165
My cousin has an Olivias sound fitted class 27 and i must say it is very good, i have had a few sound chips from olivias and have been impressed with most of there chips, there class 67 which i recently got is brilliant, there class 37 and 47 isnt the best tbh, i prefer howes sounds for the 37s, i dont think anyone can beat that tbh. I suppose its all down to personal preference and experience. And wether you have the confidence and ability to fit chips yourself. If you dont then i would strongly advise against it and go for the RTR versions, after all as you say, if it goes wrong when they are fitting it, its there problem not yours, whereas if you do it yourself, its your responsibility to do it correct. And if you ever need any help we are always here to help with any questions.

silverlink
Hi Mal, Highly recommend Olivias Trains, I've been using them for ages. Neil Bishop the owner is very helpful, also if you have one of their sound decoders they do a free reblow meaning at anytime there is an improved sound you can get it put on your decoder free. I've fitted both 26 & 27 but was struggling to find a place for the speakers, after a quick call to Neil he put me right. The speaker is fitted minus the casing pointing dowm in the roof space and then all round the egde its packed with some black mastic. I understand its used as a sealer round baths but if you buy your decoder from Neil he will put you some in when he sends it to you. Hope this helps Ian H
Alcanman
Thanks Ian, very helpful. Although I've fitted a few decoders myself, just trying to remove the loco body is often not easy, a Heljan 47 comes to mind! Also, I'm not at all confident trying to fit speakers in addition to a decoder and would hate ruin an expensive model, so I think I would prefer to pay someone with the expertise to do the job properly.
