shortliner
Just noticed this - FWIW I remember an Alpinescene at an exhibition on a continental layout, and asking what they had used for snow - The answer was "Whitewash! - when it starts to look a bit grubby, we give it another coat!" It certainly gave a good effect
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted March 1, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 1, 2013 Cracking little diorama, don't read the letters page in this months "Toddler" though! Mike.
tophski
If you plan to snow over a scattered layer, I recommend using a layer of static grass, from greenscene, or noch, or any other supplier, as the dye has not run out of any of my snow layouts that I have built and covered in this method. If you planned to use any old scatter you had left over from another project, dont, it will run and you will end up with yellow snow, which is never a good thing! Woodlands scenic's snow is great for bulk coverage, however greenscene do a much nicer snow for details such as bridge parapets etc. Hope this helps, but better to learn from other peoples mistakes, rather than repeat them! i also found the best way to make a snow man was white-tack dunked in pva then rolled in the snow! RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted March 4, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2013 A little running session tonight to test the track after ballasting and to show off a few locks running light engine :Gradually heading south .........Then really south (one for Avro) ....Finally tucked the wires out of view - looks much tidier :Hope you enjoyBen
RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted March 4, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2013 Meanwhile the weatherman or should I say weather lady in this case base delivered the latest models to be given the treatment and here they are :Hope you likeBen Well the time has come to add foliage to the embankment and trackside ar on my diorama - but I have never doe it before - whats the best way and materials to use ??Would you recommend a static grass applicator or is usual PVA and scatter a good alternative ?I have boughtsome coarse turf and some lichen for bushes and I guess it doesnt need to be A1 as it wil be covered mainly in snow eventually but when it comes to other dioramas or my main layout then I shall need to know what works best ......Thoughts appreciatedBen
RBE
Ok so, plaster cloth done and have one painted the frame black to make it look semi professional !!! Next I have kit bashed and old triang footbridge using wills girder plates and taking off the far side of the existing footbridge and extending it - I have now primed it and will try to make it suitably weathered and rusty. Here's a few pics of the bridge and then of it in situ ....... Next task is to paint the mound brown and then add some foliage and drill the holes for the OHLE, ballast the track and add some more line side detailing then await the next snowfall - if only if been quicker I could have just put the layout outside and let nature take its courses- sadly it's all melted now ! Ben Wierdly very reminiscent of the footbridge I scratchbuilt for Outon Road. Cav
RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted March 4, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2013 Cool - yeah this will need some rusting too ......... What did you use to do your rusting effect ??
Removed a/c
Nice line up of stock you have there, nicely weathered also. What do you think of the 85 and the OTAs. These are next on my wishlist I think.
RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted March 4, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2013 Both are crcking models - I have the Bachmann OTAs as opposed to the Hornby Varient but the 85 is a good runner and looks fantastic with a bit of weathering
RBE
The weathering on the bridge was done with various shades of rust paint from the games workshop range, you can find it somewhere in my Outon Road thread in more detail. The class 85 is an excellent model and takes very little to make it perfect. Heres a couple of pics of mine which I did some detail work done and weathering on, this one has the excellent Leggomanbiffo sound in too which makes a hell of a difference. Cav PS the pan mod I did is also worth doing to stop it from tipping over as can be seen on your pic.
Removed a/c
Thanks for the info chaps an 85 it is then
RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted March 7, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 7, 2013 Enough of the posing locos - there's work to be done ........Tonight as I had a night of peace I ventured into the loft and starting to lay some greenery !!I did the trackside towards the near of the diorama and also behind the stone wall. Also I started to detail around the footbridge specifically the pathway at the bottom....Once the scatter is dry i shall weather pathways and once the postie delivers it, I'll add some static grass with my noch grass master ,And even though I've not finished this scene - thoughts are moving to board two ...........Another season, another scene ........ RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted March 19, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 19, 2013 A bit more work done on the Diorama recently - the bank has had the green scatter added - now its awaiting some lichen and some static grass. The Noch Grassmaster has arrived together with various types of static grass - but first I shall need to practice on something .....Here's some pictures of the bank and of a few locos ......This also shows my Class 20s which I have just had lighting fitted to them both - directional and cab lighting - really finishes off the model !!Now I know this isn't Blue but who doesn't like a good old Intermodal Train ??? Even if there is a Fred hauling it !! Do like this loco - its been really professionally weathered !Hope you like ....Ben

RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted March 26, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 26, 2013 Well I didn't do any actual work on the diorama but I did chip a couple of new arrivals and add a driver to one of them .........Now if I just put the diorama outside for 10 minutes - it'll do the snow covering for me ! RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted March 26, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 26, 2013 The Diorama went nuclear last night !!!!! RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted March 28, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 28, 2013 Right then have given the footbridge a light weathering and added rust spots and replaced the overhead catenary masts :And finally had another new arrival - thank you Modelzone for your vastly reduced Windhoff MPV !!!Plan is to possibly amend it to a timber carrier as per the trials carried out in the mid 2000s .........Right then chaps am away for Easter but next week am home alone for the week - Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow !!!!! RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted April 5, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 5, 2013 More snowfall on the diorama today :Added Woodland Scenics Snow - doesn't look too bad ..............Also I mentioned the next module of the Diorama was taking shape and it has a distinctively Southern feel to it ............Have added a third rail to the diorama to run DEMUs and also a 73 or two when they're released... the backscene on this one will feature a distribution depot which has arrived from ID Backscenes and I hope to trim and fit it ASAP ......As always comments are welcome and appreciatedBen
RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted April 22, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 22, 2013 Well after something of a sabbatical from the diorama - I have now managed to get a few ideas and bits up together for the second board. Will be a simple double track end to end run but this one has had 3rd rail added - so I guess you now where we're going with this one ......Track laid and have also started adding the backscene which is simply overcast sky - again from ID backscenes. Here's a few pictures :Have obtained some retaining wall sections from Merkur which are Styrofoam and look quite good. Have something special planned for these which I hope to share with you soon one its made ..................
