Nice ! Bet that's a brute in O !

Further excitement today with a delivery from genesis.

There's a lot to hack off the Bachmann wagon - very large chunks of the deck....

Looking forward to it.

Hmmm, so some filing on the castings to remove excess material, test assemble, glue (no solder here !):

post-1261-0-75418200-1434650816_thumb.jpg

Loving it already.

Next is the massochism of the deck....better wait until it's dark for that...

Cheers Nik

Further thought, and you can extract the sub chassis from the deck.....

So, makes it ALOT easier to sort the deck out. May be best to cut the centre section out completely and re sheet with plastic sheet. The decks are smooth and flush on the BCAs not ribbed. There is a cut out at each end too

Ooouuuu I love stuff like this..

I made a rake of 8 BCA wagons with the cradles and they are a B&%$£r to do, I did strip the wagon down to it's components parts as you have done and cut out what was needed then added the cradles. I found using rocket glue was a lot better than solder for the cradles. The best thing about the wagon when you have finished then is when you have say 8 in a line and they are behind a 60 on a layout it looks so good and very pleasing at the same time. I ran mine behind a Colas 56 with 12 BYA's and the 8 BCA's. Just remember not to stop the train suddenly as the weight of 8 said wagons can and does cause them to de-rail as I found out a few times.

Hi Matthew,

I think it was your rebuild that inspired me a while ago. I wasn't aware anyone made the cradles.

I had 7 BAA spare and thought ..why not ?

You're right about painful rebuilds etc, but when they're done it's very satisfying... Assuming they come out ok...

Interesting to see if I can recreate the semi circle of rust on the outer faces of the cradles

Do I really have to go to work today ??

Ok, so I've been thinking overnight and while driving about today.

I started drilling holes to remove the deck... Nope.

Why not score along the underside with a craft knife ? Yes:

So, the sub chassis can now be put back in place (will be glued rather than screwed):

post-1261-0-55250600-1434727567.jpg

You can now see all of that lovely underframe structure....for now.

A slice of plastic sheet with appropriate gaps can now form the new deck.

I might remove the weights (as they are in a place which has a gap...). I won't need them with all that pewter up top.

Coming along.

So, have removed weights (they just push out)

Glued sub chassis back in position.

Cut a test piece of evergreen sheet. Need to work out where the slots run now - certainly the two ends and a central run end to end by the looks of it.

Looking good thus far Nick...

I've been thinking about a crane kit too, but I can't justify the cost of one as a GCSE student (no time) and on a child's pocket money!

Must get an RHTT sorted though...

Jack.

Hadn't thought of summer actually! Only 4 weeks away!

I think I'll pass on the crane but I'll definitely get some RHTT bits...I've got the wagons ready....just no modules!

Also just noticed you've reached (and surpassed) post 1000, congrats and here's to another 1000! ;)

Jack.

Thanks for the likes etc - does spur me on.

BCA progress has continued in various areas,

Filing of cradles now complete:

post-1261-0-62264700-1434911460.jpg

So next it's a mammoth glueing session.

There is quite a bit of filing to do.....

post-1261-0-03270800-1434911499.jpg

I've also painted the inner, outer and axles of the wheels pending fitting of brake discs. I may do the internal disc too as they will be more visible on this BCA than a normal BAA.

Is a rake of 7 enough ?????

Top work as usual Nick. Love the self portrait btw! ;)

Sounds good Matthew. The SPAs are on my list to do.

Tonight I've added brake discs to the outer faces of the wheels using Colin Craig's CC06W discs. I have started adding inner brake discs using CC07W (as the others don't fit over the collar) but run out....

In my view they really do add to the model - why is no manufacturer (generally) paying attention to this ???

I've been studying photos and I have some observations which I will be implementing - some wagons have round buffers.... Plus for me, the iron work underneath appears to be ALOT more beefy than Bachmann have made it, in the exposed end I may rip out and replace with a larger I beam.

I've made an attempt on a deck, but I think I need to make the gap narrower in the middle.

Finally, a look at the double faced wheels on a wagon, looks the part to me.

post-1261-0-33135600-1434999997.jpg

And from low down, track level....

Happy modelling,

Nick

Hi JohnH

The wheel treads aren't painted - using a fairly fine brush it's easy to do

On the odd occasion you might go over the tread etc - best wiped off

Regards Nick

Brake disc inserts do make  the wheel sets far more attractive cosmetic wise, and the cradles are coming along nicely but not sure how two ozzy wagons will fit in to the rake :blum: stunning work as usual Nick.

Colin Craig delivery arrived today so have finished the remaining wheels tonight,

When you look at the number of wheels.......loads......

post-1261-0-05870200-1435343031.jpg

And you need that many for only 7 wagons...

It's maths I know, but it doesn't look right !

Have managed to prime the cradles this week so it's a coat of red oxide tomorrow.

Must go to the local model emporium (no, not one of those shops) and purchase I beam.

Beam me up....

A delivery in from genesis has allowed me to fit 3 of the 7 with Oleo round buffers:

I've been to the local emporium and picked up some I beam. Cut off offending weak members and replaced with more substantial stock, then recut the reduced length deck to fit:

Paint this afternoon.
