rs4
Hello again... Following the saga of the British GP, I pushed myself into attacking some PCAs. Railmatch concrete and Matt white applied, then white spirit wash down. Buffers greased. Brake dust applied to springs (not as brake dust but as the differing shade of rust the springs get by their movement). Will be "urbanising" some with graffiti. Photos of one attached as an example. I'm not over the moon with these, and I've had to hide the poor base coat weathering with heavy concrete runs which aren't actually prototypical. Look better than when they came out of the box though ! Got to finish these off this week and move onto to something else ! Happy modelling.. bridgiesimon
Last 10 laps of the gp were mad!!!! Back on topic, I like the weathering ont he cement wagons, I really much get to work on my rake, smaller though as I model in N!! Best wishes Simon, a disappointed Hamilton fan!
rs4
Cheers Ess1 and Bridgiesimon Further lambs to the slaughter tonight - stage one with Railmatch concrete: Off to Spa at the end of August, been before, such an amazing track. Jammy to see Damon Hill win that year with the huge crash at the start.
rs4
In retrospect I think these are perhaps looking better than I thought they would, so overall... Pleased. Still work to do though, more paint, refit wheels & couplings then run them.... Wheels will need a gauge check as I had to take them apart for the brake discs.

rs4
Found a few bits & pieces today so have been painting: Speed signs & drain covers GKN blue pallets, some plain ones. Red 200L drums Piece of scaffold with a ladder that I now realise poses an H&S issue ! All good fun.
Tase
Good work mate, bit of a change from weathering wagons! Love the scaffolding platform with the ladder. Was it scratchbuilt or bought? I'm going start on my PCA's soon - what do you think is the best shade to use? I was thinking of a light grey perhaps railmatch's rail grey 206? Regards
rs4
Hi Tase 'Fraid the scaffold was not scratch built. No idea where the bits came from - just glued it together (badly) PCAs - are you repainting or weathering ? Paints used so far have been: 402 underframe dirt (may also have been Precision also as I ran out) 422 concrete wash 421 Matt white wash 412 weathered black & 415 oily steel for buffer grease I'm thinking of what I want to do next - FEA? JGA ? Hopefully off to DEMU tomorrow - that'll get the creative juices flowing ! Hoping to make it a mega day and visit Derby, Toton and maybe dear old deserted Bescot
RMweb Premium James Makin Posted July 5, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 5, 2013 Incredible stuff, can't understand how you get the stamina to weather that many PCAs in one go! I'd go crazy!! Love the inside-facing wheel brake discs by the way, one of those things that probably rarely get noticed but you know they're there and they look cracking! Tase
Cheers Nick. Apologies, I should have said: I'm looking to repaint initially and was thinking of using Railmatch light grey? Regards
rs4
Been doodling this afternoon, not the right wagon or exactly the "artwork" from my photo, but looks ok ! REALLY got to get these PCAs finished... Tase - I haven't got a clean PCA to offer up a tin of paint to - I'd wanted to reply but not able to offer an opinion - sorry !
Tase
Like that Nick - looks good! No worries about the paint match. I'll go with the Railmatch and see how I get on.

rs4
Cheers David, Tase. Nearing the end of project pca - thankfully. Redone the silvered buffer shanks White paint to hand brake Yellow paint to most bearing covers Applied brake dust around springs (showing spring movement not brake dust) Refitted all wheels, lubed pin-points Some more graffiti... Just need to sort couplings on most wagons and fit flashing tail lamp: Happy modelling.. Nick
rs4
Das flashing tail lamp ya ? Buffers looking nice and greasy in this shot.
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted July 14, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 14, 2013 PCA's looking good. Just a note about wagon graffiti - it's usually at low level - up to about half height of the side, as the scrotes can't access the higher reaches of the wagon from the track side. I do have (very few) examples where they may have used some form of higher access, but I guess that the average tagger would be travelling with nothing more than a rucksack full of spray cans and not a stepladder! Passenger stock often has higher graffiti as it can be accessed via cleaning platforms in stabling sidings. Cheers, Mick
rs4
You know Mick that dawned on me - I was picturing the scum with a nice extension ladder or maybe working off the platform !! You live and dare I say learn.....just a bit too late this time !

Jamiel
Have you been tempted to sneak a Banksy image on to one of the wagons? Not easy, but might be fun to try.Loving all the images of your weathering still, and learning too about how dirt verses a bit of repainting all builds up.Thanks for sharing.Jamie
rs4
Thanks Hammy...and Jamie Banksy....now there's an idea... I was idly thinking about a short project before the next "major".. I'd sprayed up some vans but they were a little OTT. So..t-cut ? Seen it mentioned on these hallowed pages so popped into well known retail chain and got to say it works a treat... Before: After: Before: After: Pleased so far, will do some more, and yes the OCA needs alot of rust & damage adding to it. Poor thing.
rs4
Another day, another wagon.. Same technique of huge overspray....whahey and a rescue via t-cut: What would I do without wagons & muck ?
rs4
Next up, or at least preparation work are KFAs for a binliner train (courtesy of Wild Boar Models and thanks to David W for the tip off regarding the containers) First step was wheel strip and paint externals. Waiting for them to dry then I'll do the internal surfaces. They may get a coat of underframe dirt and some roof dirt to the decks this pm.
