Hi,

A few weeks ago, I asked for info as to where to find 1:43 scale lorries.

I took HSBs advice and contacte Goods Yard Models    http://www.goodsyardmodels.co.uk

I am so glad I did . Here are some pics of the ET6 on my layout with Skytex coal sacks, waiting to be weathered, and mirrors to be fitted.

I agree, the Goods Yard Models lorries are exquisite - I've just bought the Austin, which may get the RC treatment.

Meanwhile, here's the die-cast version of the Thames going about its business.....

Thats a superb model of the Fordson and exactly the right kind of truck for a coal merchant. Only slight carp is the wheels they don't look quite right, back hubs don't look inset enough and front hubs not out enough .

I suspect that Goods Yards Models have got it quite close - it would appear that on all the photos I can find that the outer walls of the rear wheels more-or-less line up with the outer edge of the load bed, but regarding the track of the front wheels, there seems to be some minor variation between vehicles!

My 2 arrived this week, and I am very pleased with the result. Goods Yard Models are to be congratulated in the effort to bring the quality of road vehicles to the standards we now expect from 7mm manufacturers.

I took took a few pics. on our clubs layout, and they fit in nicely. Weathering is something that has mixed views, but I think these will benefit, by looking like they belong in a goods yard.

Hi Merfyn,

I gave mine a very light coat of grime and some coal dust on the flat bed (after a re-paint of the wood). I was hoping it wouldn't look as though it had been down the mine to collect the coal, but appear used but cared for. Be careful, my windscreen wipers fell off within a few hours of getting my lorry home, but were easy to re-fix.

I agree, these lorries are excellent and I bought one of each to decorate Dock Green. The only thing necessary is to do something about the brand-new finish and the 'orrible shade of orange that the wood is painted. Question - would the inside of the green one be painted as the model is, or left bare wood like a railway wagon?

Also, does anyone know of a source of colour pictures of lorries of this vintage in service (to use as weathering guides)? A Google search turns up lots of photos of lovingly restored vehicles - but of course these are all immaculate and therefore no use in the pursuit of realism....

I put together a few  flickr galleries of coal lorries ( dunno why they only let you put 18 pics in a gallery )in use they all look well cared for-

I agree with jcb, the wheels let these models down, for the cost of the models you would think they would take more care to get the wheels correct.

When I am buying model lorries I always check if the wheels look correct, if they don't then the model stays where it is!

I bought this lorry, not because I have an interest in lorries, I don't. I can accept that modellers will spot discrepencies with road vehicles, as I would with a class 33 locomotive etc.

I was happy to part with my cash because, quite frankly, I wanted to complete my coal yard scene, and there was nothing else realisticly available.

The chap who has invested his own funds it to this project has taken a financial gamble, and due to the small volumes produced, the price is invariably high. If he gambles on any more, and they are what I need, I wouldnt hesitate in purchaseing more.

I have contacted corgi and enquired if they are entering the 1:43 market, and quite frankly, they are not interested. Base Toys (Now BT models) did not even have the courtesy to reply.

I think 'letting these models down' is overly strong, and JCB pointed it out as a 'slight carp', quite correctly......

In all other respects, these models are superb, and the detail on the wheels is also excellent, if not sticking out enough!

To put it in context, there are white metal kits for lorries out there, which are much cruder, much less complete, for more money. I therefore greatly welcome these two lorries, and would say they are far superior to anything else available. I would rather have something that is generally extremely good, that not have something, because it is not quite perfect.

I very much hope the project is a successfor Goods Yard Models, and that they are encouraged to bring out further models.

I apologise if I upset anyone for the comments I made about the wheels on this model, I was only putting my thoughts into words,

I thought I was giving constructive criticism, isn't that what forums are for?

I can't imagine why anyone should be upset by your comments - feedback is important.

I would have to say I am disappointed by the wheels on the Goodsyard models, but even knowing this beforehand did not stop me obtaining a couple, and overall I am very pleased with my purchases.  I will however have to do something about the wheels - but that is simply because being a truck anorak I find they let the models down and I notice them.  Maybe some 3D printed replacements?

To illustrate why a few of us would like to see the wheels improved, the following photos compare them with the wheels from another diecast Ford Thames in the same scale.  I really hope the guys go on to release more vehicles in this scale - and I do hope they get the wheels better next time! (Oh, and a satin paint finish please  )

Hi Osgood, I like the wheels and hubs on your models, I think that the wheels can make or spoil a model, (I don't like hotwheels type wheels either)

I still like the rest of the detail on the Goodsyard models though.

The wheels are on the Ford Thames Northwest Gas Board truck made by IXO, and which is I believe the basis of Giles's red r/c truck. Apart from a wartime Bedford with military front end the only British truck in the range. Some lovely 50s and 60s European examples though!
