DIGGLE, Greater Manchester, near Oldham. Don't know much about the place, just like the name! The railway line between Manchester and Leeds and Bradford rubs through Diggle, but the village no longer has a station; the Huddersfield canal also passes through the village.

Sorry, can't find any decent pictures.

 Cheers, David.

Dumfries.

Dumfries is a market town and former Royal Burgh within the Dumfries and Galloway area of Scotland.

It is adjacent to the mouth of the River Nith where it runs into the Solway Firth.

Dumfries was the county town of the former county of Dumfriesshire.

Dumfries is also known as Queen of the South and the people of Dumfries are known as 'Doonhamers'.

Dumfries railway station was originally opened by the Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway in 1848. Then the line serving it was extended northwards to Kilmarnock and subsequently to Glasgow two years later.

The Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway then became part of the GSWR at the same time. It also became the junction for branches to Castle Douglas and Stranraer, which were opened around 1860. The line to Lockerbie was opened in 1863 and in 1865 was taken over by the Caledonian Railway.

The lines have now closed and the 'Port Road' to Stranraer being the last to go in June 1965, which left only the original GSWR main line open to serve the town.

Carnation milk built a factory in Dumfries to produce condensed milk which opened in 1935. There were three units constructed that produced the tin cans, condensed milk and also at a later date 'Coffeemate'. The factory had private sidings and access to the station's good yard. This gave access for the milk trains to the deliver the raw product an d also distribute. Trains no longer run to the site due to the American parent company.

St. Fillans, Perthshire.  Picturesquely situated at the eastern end of Loch Earn, the village used to have a station on the Lochearnhead, St Fillans & Comrie Railway.  Opened in 1901, the station closed exactly 50 years later and is now a caravan site.  More recently, in 2005 a housing development was halted to avoid killing the fairies who allegedly lived under a rock on the proposed site.  After some negotiation the new housing estate was redesigned so that the rock in question was preserved in a small park in the centre of the estate.

Salzburg – capital of Salzburgerland, birthplace of Mozart, the most beautiful city in Austria.

Plenty of nice pictures to choose from – now what shall it be? The Festung Hohensalzburg? The Mirabell Gardens? The Getreidegasse?

Oh, I know – you can never have too many MPDs!
