DanielB
Bit more of an update today. A lot more scenic work done. Just have to wait for it to all dry and I should be able to do more tomorrow. It's starting to take shape now.

DanielB
My phone is low on battery so the camera wont work. It's charging now. There'll be pics before I head to bed. Not much to look at at the moment as I'm waiting for the glue to dry on the hanging basket liner before I rip the backing off, and the wallpaper paste ballast mix to set. These might not be the best choice, but the point of the layout was to learn what works and what doesn't.
DanielB
Okay, so I took photos last night but nodded off before I managed to upload them. As such, they are a little late in coming, but here we are... Firstly, pre-ripping off of the hanging basket liner backing: Please note that the wallpaper paste/ballast mix is still wet at this point. Finally, the work in progress embankment that will hide the single road fiddle yard from the front of the layout. I plan to have the track disappear under a large bridge/short tunnel underneath some sort of upper level depot - I'm thinking a scrap yard just because I can't shake the idea of making one. Embankment was made from expanded polystyrene cut to shape and coated in PVA/Water soaked kitchen towels. I shall of course be painting them brown when they are dry: Pictures of further stages to come...
RBE
Where did you get the polystyrene from Dan?
DanielB
Out of a package from something I ordered online last year. I never throw anything away.
DanielB
Quick update, here's the layout with the backing ripped off the basket liner. I'm quite impressed with it, though it definitely needs trimming down considerably - some of that grass is about twenty scale feet long! And a close up of the embankment:
RBE
Haha. Yeah HBL is not always the best for N Im affaid. Very long fibres. Cav
DanielB
Give it time I'll get it looking the part.
DanielB
Some quick shots of the progress for the evening. Most of the ballast has dried and set, and has lightened considerably. The hard standing has had the concrete paper from Scalescenes added, though the center of the track isn't done yet - I'm picking up some DAS tomorrow that I'll be using for that hopefully. I've quickly mocked up a concrete retaining wall to go against the embankment where it's been cut out around the concrete at the front of the layout - this section will eventually become the foundations of a demolished building, and I intend to put flock and static grass on it to show it being reclaimed by nature, along with associated random junk that has been forgotten for the weeds to grow over. The embankment itself isn't quite dry yet so I'll be leaving the painting of that until tomorrow. I also need to cut some wooden supports for the bridge/tunnel mouth and the upper level scrap yard. The basket liner has been cut shorter, further trimming is required, and I'll keep going with that until I get something relatively in scale - and until I am happy with it. I have plans for a few details for the grassy areas to make them look more interesting, we shall see how that turns out. At any rate, the local yard shunter - a class 04 - is in attendance with a short rake of grain hoppers. Obligatory "Google Earth" picture at the bottom! DanielB
Work has progressed a little more tonight, with a fair bit of time spent neatening things up before adding more scenics. The basket liner has been cut back some more - and I shall keep doing so as time goes on to get it looking suitable. I've also added some ash ballast in one place, which shall be detailed some more into and area of burned grass and debris from some local yobs setting something alight by the tracks. In addition, static grass has been added in places on the basket liner, and I intend to add bushes and the like as things progress. The concrete at the front of the layout has had static grass added along the lines where the slabs join, to show a state of neglect. Once the glue dries I shall remove the excess and it shouldn't look quite so severe. The free Scalescenes goods shed has been added to the area, to give an idea of an old, abandoned civil engineers yard. Not sure which way to go with this area yet. I might keep the shed, I might not. If I do keep it, it will make it suitably neglected and overgrown. The embankment has been painted in a basecoat of the same brown enamel paint from a tester pot. More basket liner has been glued down, once the glue dries I'll rip the backing off, clear the crud out of it, then cut it right back like the rest. I have partially added a cardboard backscene, I know cardboard isn't the best choice of material, however I had a lot of it to hand, and no money for more wood, so the choice was easily made! I'll add some sort of card to the front and cook up some sort of detailed backscene from somewhere. To get an idea of how the scrap yard end will look, a cardboard mock up was dropped in place, it gives the basic shape of the layout, and I hope shows a very rough idea of what I have in mind. Lots to do, as always! Cheers, Dan
Gloucester Road
Coming along nicely. I did something similar. Should be here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/album/329-new-street-not-final/, hopefully Stephen

DanielB
Distractions everywhere! It's certainly been a while since I updated this thread, as I've been working on other layouts - 2 American, 2 British - yes I am really working on 5 layouts at the same time, so time has been split between them all. As the Inglenook is the one that has progressed the furthest, I thought I'd crack on with it and try and get some more done to it. I've added card to the backscene (badly) and done some basic work here and there to bring the overall progress on the layout further toward getting the basics in place - ground cover, brick papers and the like. I will be building up details in layers bit by bit until the layout is eventually finished. I am having fun doing it, and that's what matters, right? Some progress photos with lots of stock in place - still not sure if I want this to be a civil engineers yard, scrap yard, or MPD yet. I guess it will just evolve over time! Glue is still drying so the ground cover looks a bit patchy at the moment.
