NXEA!
Healy mills, rows of 37s waiting there fate 97/98.... When you say 97/98, are you referring to the year of the photo? In which case this is likely to be incorrect, as Healey Mills became the dumping ground for switched off 37/47/56's in 2004, so it would be after this point in time. Hope this helps. br2975
The original series was D6700-D6999/D6600-D6608 I believe the "six-eights" term is mainly South Wales in origin as many of the D68xx series were first allocated there. Cheers, Mick "Sixty-eights" was indeed a term used by South Wales railwaymen, derived from the GWR practice of referring to locos as a 'forty-two' (42XX) or 'twenty-eight' (28XX) etc. . Many of my spotting chums of the late 60s and during the early 70s referred to them slightly differently as 'six-eighters', the terms 'growlers' and 'tractors' were unheard of. . Here I've attached a (much reworked) slide taken from the roof of a rickety PW hut of an unidentified 'six-eighter' (by now a TOPS Cl.37) free wheeling downhill through teeming rain from Cwm Colliery passing Common Branch Jct toward Cross Inn and eventually Llantrisant - taken early 1979 on my then morning commute into Cardiff. . Wayne 37901
Very nostalgic shot Brian. I can just imagine trying to stand on the roof of that PW hut to grab that one. Will we be seeing any of your late 80's/early 90s snaps? Look forward to seeing more. Cheers

Brian Just a bit, Although as a young lad, I can just remember the blue 37s when my dad used to take me to Radyr on weekends. I believe my first encounter with an 08 was at Radyr as well, I can just remember standing at the fence alongside the headshunt (where platform 3 now sits for those who don't know). As a lad the sheer size of an 08 close up was exciting indeed. Brian, in your shot above I'm guessing those Dogfish would be en route for loading at Penderyn quarry? Have you any idea when ballast trains ceased from there? Cheers

The Border Reiver
I have beem scanning in some old slides for a friend and here a few where he is not too sure about the location, which he thinks may be West Hartlepool shed site. The previous slides in the set were taken at Thornaby. These four were very, very over exposed and I have correctedthem as best as I can. Can anyone conform they were taken at West Hartlepool? Howie Note: I have estimated that they were taken in early 1974. 6809 on left 6794 on right with two 03 and one 08 6794 6813 6809 with a green Class 40 passing by on a passenger. Rivercider
I have recently been scanning a few more of my old photos onto Flickr, here are some more 37s in South Wales in their natural habitat, I had some happy times chasing them:- 37243 comes off the Vale of Glamorgan route into Barry with ballast hoppers, either new seacows or repainted sealions, 17/9/81 37297 and 37205 storm through Barry with an empty MGR set from Aberthaw, 21/7/82 Heading south from Taffs Well towards Radyr Yard is 37268 with coal in 16t minerals and 21t hoppers, 11/8/82 Beneath one of the surviving piers of the Walnut Tree Viaduct 37218 heads up the valley with 16t minerals from Radyr Yard, at this time the four tracks were still in use here, 37218 is on the Up Relief Line, 26/6/81 edit - to correct description, thanks Mike cheers Edited January 7, 2014 by Rivercider 10
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted January 7, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 7, 2014 (edited) To be precise Kevin/Kenny 37218 at Walnut Tree Jcn in the bottom pic is on the Up Relief Line. By the time the pic was taken the Up Relief had been cutback to Walnut Tree Jcn (1978), the Down Relief having been cutback (to start at Walnut Tree Jcn) in 1970 Edited January 7, 2014 by The Stationmaster
