RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted October 4, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 4, 2016 I have an old magazine with one of those National ads on the back cover featuring a young lady in a swimsuit. Rugd1022
Nidge what number plates have you got? I have a contact who will make pre 01 font ones Yours would look great with yellow raised plastic digits which I believe are still available The plates on it at the moment are motorcycle sized, or close to it, no surprise really as the chap I bought it from imports bikes from Japan as his main line of business, the Mini was part of a small collection of cars he came across while he was out there, including a '70s Beetle and an early Porsche 914 project. They're the smallest legal size of plate you can put on a car so I'm told. Once the V5C arrives in my name I'm looking at putting an ageless plate on it and will probably go for the raised digit style, I put a set of these on the Jag a while ago and they look fantastic. When I started looking for ageless reg's last week I was pleasantly surprised how affordable some of them are, and early '70s suffix plates can be had for as little as £50 plus VAT and transfer fee, if I don't find a suitable ageless one I might go for a H, J or K suffix instead which would look good in the raised digit style. I have a bit of a fetish for old number plates for some reason! Had several bites on the Jag this week but they're all from overseas, I wish someone local would buy it! Horsetan
....When I started looking for ageless reg's last week I was pleasantly surprised how affordable some of them are.... Back in the early 1960s, my old man ran a Beetle registered "VKN 952". Although he would like to have the plate back, that number has never reverted to DVLA so it cannot be reissued. I did once find "VKN 962" available at a plate dealer, but only at a cost of £1300 + VAT. You could buy a whole (used) car for that sort of money.....

Today £1300 wouldn't even buy you an old banger Mini, my first one cost about a tenth of that! Some of the Irish three letters + three numbers ageless plates available are much cheaper than that though. 1970s reflective raised digit plates look pretty good on a dark green car, I'm definitely leaning towards them...

brianthesnail96
Sorry Nidge, I've been spam liking your posts again. I love the "Your Mother wouldn't like it" MG ones, not seen the one with the hard cornering 'B before. Agree with raised letter black and yellows on a dark green car- Adam wanted to put black and silver ones on the Dolomite but we persuaded him otherwise (by the simple method of buying him a set of plates for Christmas!), and I think it looks much better for it. Black and silvers are almost a bit of a cliché on Minis and the like too. The Dolly was still wearing it's normal reflective plastic plates that Henleys had fitted back in 1980 but they were just starting to delaminate so they were taken off for safe keeping. Three classics for the price of one there- I suppose at 30 years old the Land Rover ought to count. We can do shiny slotmags too... had these polished up the other week. Unfortunately they don't fit the Dolly (arch/ tyre interface issues), and I wasn't planning on putting them back on the Marina, so I'm considering buying something else to put them on. Black/white or black/silver plates are illegal on any car registered from 1st January 1973 anyway. Edited October 5, 2016 by Horsetan
brianthesnail96
Indeed, but that doesn't stop folks. That said, my estate ('74 "M") came with them, I was stopped in a random check on the way back from the pub one night and the copper gave me a ticking off (but no ticket). Was quite impressed he knew, with it only being a year out.

No apologies necessary Matt... that Dollie looks fabulous, nice to see a late one with period looks too! Those Slotmags would look good on so many cars, what are you thinking of getting...? My second P6 V8 had it's original Bluemels reflective raised digit plates when the previous owner had it, they do look good on a green car (I really ought to have kept this one, it was another London registered Henleys car and I still don't know why I let it go!)... Just found this old '70s GB plate lurking in a box of car stuff, the sun has got to it a bit but it might find its way onto one of the motors at some point... I'm always picking up this sort of stuff at car shows, you never know when they might come in handy... Horsetan
I believe the rules have changed for some reason on black plates it's now any pre 75 car.... The rules on plates have not changed. What has changed is that VED exemption has been reintroduced for old cars, but this time they must be at least 40 years old to qualify.

Obviously we know this is just coincidence- the number plate cut off date was introduced in 1973 and the tax exemption in 1998 (well, probably 1997 to be pedantic) when the decision was made to stop the rolling 25 year tax exemption (as was). It would seem someone didn't do their homework! It's even more daft when you think that the reflective 'plates were made compulsory on safety grounds... but that's what it is. Not entirely sure what to put the Slotmags on- I quite fancy a Herald or Vitesse. What I'd really like is a Vitesse estate but since the factory didn't actually build any (although one of the London dealers did put a few together) that might involve a bit of DIY! I've got a set of banded steel wheels in the garage too that I think might be from a Herald. The offset is wrong for a Marina, they try and occupy the same space as the brake caliper on the front. Not many options for 4x95.25 (3 3/4") unfortunately!
