manna
G'Day Folks. The Parts have arrived from the UK Thanks to 34C, the new cab's been removed and the tender, weighted and put together, then it was time to remove the front splasher, I carefully cut them off and replaced them with a couple of splashers from a Dublo R1, the chimney was removed and replaced with a chimney from 'Thomas' ( J17's had a rather spindly chimney). I've had to add another layer of square rod around the firebox, to get the cab to look as if it's in the right place. Piccy time. In pic no 1, you can see the front splashers, drying. manna
manna
G'Day Folks Dashing ahead with the J17, changed the dome, and added the reversing lever etc. followed by a clean up and the first coat of paint, which is where I'll have to leave it for a while, off on my winter hols, going to check out Queensland again, we're about 11/13c and they're in the high 20's, so a big difference in temps, so enjoy the J17, I'm off to load the caravan. manna

You should have stayed at home we have lovely weather to moan about. I hope the guys from the club that Richard and I use to attend are following this J17 conversion, most were GER/LNER/BR(ER) modellers and a J17 would be a nice addition to their loco studs.
manna
G'Day Folks Been thinking about the chassis for the J17, which is 8'6"x8'6"x8'6", the Jinty chassis is well out as you can see, so the idea whizzing around my brain is, a rewheeled B12 or even a Hornby A3, I'll have a look into this when I get home. manna
manna
G'Day Folks Well I'm back home again, after 3 weeks tripping round Australia, had a bit of rain, but the farmers needed it. After getting back home out came the 'Green Bible' I didn't find anything suitable for the J17, BUT, always on the lookout for another project, I found a couple, a Robinson B1 and B9, and both have almost the same wheelbase dimensions as a Hornby A1/3, The B1 has almost the same wheel size as the A1/3, hacking has commenced on a old A3 chassis ( I have half a dozen spare) also Atso has informed me that the B4 also is possible from the A1/3 chassis. The B9 needs to have a wheel change, I'm going to use Hornby L1 wheels, a mill small but close enough. Pics show before and after the rear end of the A1/3 chassis was cut off, I'm using a tender drive chassis at the moment, but hope to motorize it later. manna

manna
G'Day Folks A couple of days has past, and the B1 continues to grow. I went out to the shed for something and noticed a pair of bodies from GWR Counties that had had the chassis nicked, the running plates bore more than a passing resemblance to the B1's runningplate, so off they came, I needed both as the B1 is longer, an afternoons work and we have a runningplate. manna
manna
G'Day Folks Bit of an update on the B1, the basic outline of the loco can now be seen, with the card added for the cab and belpaire firebox, boiler has been glued into place, I had to grind some excess metal off of the chassis top yesterday, as it was a little high, might have to add a tad, as it's possibly a mite low. manna
manna
G'Day Folks Another update in the B1, the cab has been cleaned up an a roof added, the firebox has been filed down to a rough shape, ( I think the cab end, needs a bit more taking off) A smokebox door has been made out of a Hornby, King door. A chimney of questionable shape has been fitted, the next job is to make the splashers (which will be fun !) manna

Hi cypherman, virtually finished, all I need to do is number it, add the cab steps and handrails, maybe I should bring it back to the workbench manna

manna
G'Day Folks Well, yes cypherman, I 'was' going to use B12 steps, until I put them in a safe place, and now can't find them or remember where the safe place was ? So built some more, and fitted the handrails. State of play tonight, safety valves and numbers tomorrow. manna
cypherman
Hi Manna, Thanks for the update. The replacement motor arrived today for my J17. So I have all the bits. Donor B12 body and tender in NE black. A care worn 3F and a new motor. So I will start mine when I get some time off next week. Really just need a new chimney and front splashers. I will keep the original dome but file it down and infill with filler to get the right shape. Edited September 21, 2018 by cypherman
manna
G'Day Folk Sorry for the terrible pics, I'll take a couple of new one, when it's finished (outside). For the future, if your at a model railway show or swap meet, keep a lookout for cheap loco bodies, always a useful source of bits. manna Edited September 22, 2018 by manna

manna
G'day Folks The J17 is finished, although I have to add the motor and pick ups, a couple of coats of black, nice new numbers, and some 'grot'. I'm pleased with the way it's come out, but the chassis wheelbase is out, not much I can do about that, unless there's a J17 chassis available ?, but then would it fit the body, probably not ! One thing I wouldn't do, if I made it again, is cut the firebox back, just cut the cab off and add the B12 cab. manna. PS, I didn't check the wheels, one is off the track, and there's a dodgy handrail. Opps 7
Londontram
Another fine creation Terry you say the wheel base is out but have you managed to line the wheels up with the splashers? I'm a firm believer in the if it looks right principal. Although I'm not posting anything I've still got a few projects on the go mostly carriage and wagons but looking at a few loco builds. One is the possible use of the front two driving axles of a B12 chassis as the starting point of an 1870s 0-4-2 Caledonian 670 class loco. The idea of the B12 chassis being the gap of the first two axles which is 28mm though the Caley loco measures out at 25mm so a 3mm difference or 9 inches in real money but thought using a few dodges like making each splasher 1mm longer would help disguise this some what (the wheels would need changing for 20mm Romfords anyway) What's the sort of difference if you could get it to look right and balanced would you tolerate? cypherman
Hi all, Well I have had a bit of a disaster for my J17 build. I have put my 3F donor engine some where nice and safe. So safe that I cannot find the damn thing. Ah well will just have to keep looking. Manna a great job on the J17. It looks wonderful. I am of the same opinion as London tram if it looks right then it is right. Can I ask a question that may help me. I have 4 Bachman/Mainline STD 4 engines all with wonky wheels. I did buy a replacement chassis to only find that that was absolutely buggered as it had worn through the contact points on the wheel sockets. Have any you got any ideas of what would be a reasonable replacement for those chassis. You cannot buy the wheel sets new any more. cypherman
Hi all, Well still cannot find the 3F anywhere, But did find a brand new complete with motor Hornby J83 chassis I had forgot I had bought. Sad thing is I know I bought it for a reason but I am damned if I can remember what......
manna
G'Day Folks Hi cypherman, I suppose the Hornby 4mt chassis could be a good substitute !! When you find the 3F body, you can use the J83 chassis, should fit. manna
cypherman
Hi Manna, Thanks for the info about the Hornby 4MT. I will look into it and see how much they cost and if it will fit. I remembered what I bought the J83 chassis for. It was to use with a Lima J50 body, But then I heard that Hornby were bringing out a J50 so decided to wait to see what sort of price it settled at. Even on Ebay the are still about £70 plus. So that is a none starter. I will look for a cheap Lima donor body for that project. When I find the 3F it is a complete engine with tender. Only problems with it were the steps at the back were broken off and the motor was burnt out. As I said I have just got a replacement motor for it So I will keep looking for it. It would be harder to use the J83 chassis as it is one of the newer ones and not the older one that came from the original Jinty Edited September 26, 2018 by cypherman
