On my visit to the US in July 2013, I visited the Irvine / Colton / Cajon area - the train shots are in this thread, the freight cars are in this thread so logically I needed one for the locomotives.

As I've said in the other threads, these are presented "as is", there may be some duplication but rather than over zealous pruning by me I thought I'd post them all in case they are useful to someone.

Most of the trains in the shots -- I think there might be 3 or 4 total -- are headed straight east to Yuma and Texas. However, the one with the SD60Ms is almost certainly the LOQ32 Kaiser Hauler, which is a very heavy local that turns around on the reverse loop behind the photographer:

There is only one departure yard (the throat of which you see from the Pepper Ave bridge on which the photographer is standing), which is set up for eastbounds. Kaiser Yard is to the west, so trains headed in that direction have to turn around from the departure yard.

"Trains" have brought out what looks like a book in magazine format ("RAILROAD MAPS" - $9.95) with detailed rail maps of North America. I bought a copy yesterday from Barnes & Noble but have had no chance to study it yet.

It includes what appears to be a highly detailed and annotated map of the Cajon Pass area.

What I find incredible is still the growth rate by mega tonnage since 1980 - on this route it has gone from 63MGT in 1980 to 145MGT in 2000 (MGT = Millions of Gross Tons).

Best, Pete.

say Dave, when you actually see these up close like that ES44, do you still think "s*** that's big"?!!

Sure do - you missed an Anglo Saxon term between "that's" and "big" - 'kin

Good to see the older style Gunderson TTX container cars still in use.

Ian

I photographed all / most (can't remember) of both of these trains, I'll post the wagons ( ) on my other thread sometime soon

They are blummin big :) thanks Beast much appreciated. Are you tempted to join in the freemo layout now ;)

They are indeed. A smidge over 10 feet wide, just over 15 feet tall and nearly 200 metric tons a-piece.

A new ES44AC can put down down 166'000 pounds of continuous TE.

Ive also seen that UP have just started running a BALLASTED  ES44 at 432'000 lbs for even more tractive effort.

Another little fact that I found out from an American engineer awhile back, those knuckle couplers they use are rated at 390'000 pounds, that's a smidge under 177 metric tons of draw bar pull and a consist of these loco's will break them if handled badly or there's to much head end power on a big enough train!

That's a lot of grunt in my book! :O
