Steven B. I know………it’s rapidly approaching isn’t it. A few buildings to do but no massive ones, mind you the small ones often take longer than the big ones. I’m just ordering some storage boxes for the buildings that won’t be fixed down plus for the controller, CDU and leads etc. The plan is move Olympia into the garage in April and get it “boxed up” ready….and I might have time to make some lighting units. 1
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted February 23, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 23, 2023 (edited) Didn’t get much done today but managed to find time to put the bracket signal together. This sits south of the station between the District line and the Down WLL. It’s based on THIS SIGNAL……..does anyone know what the lower bits on the post are? They don’t look like shunt signals….Limit of shunt signs? The main post will be shortened a bit when I’ve sprayed it! Is it like this one at Newton Abbot? https://photos.signalling.org/picture?/27901/category/3969-1986_february Which looks similar to a photo 9 shots left of a 33 at Exeter St D in your original link, which is possibly a backing on signal, as shown here https://www.railsigns.uk/sect3page2.html

RMweb Premium HillsideDepot Posted February 23, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 23, 2023 I think they are Calling-On signals like those at Newton Abbot, the coloured lenses of which are near the middle of the arm, so the light obscures most of the back of the arm, rather being at the side as on the main signals. The squarish thing at the bottom of the LH doll is the motor drive for the Distant. 2

They look like miniature (subsidiary) semaphore arms to me (i.e. Shunt Ahead / Calling on arms) seen from behind (mostly obscured by their lamps). Below one of them (on the post with the Distant arm) is an electric motor, most likely for the Distant arm, and below that (on both posts) the balance weights. 1

Almost certainly for calling-on in this application - to allow a train (which might be a light engine) to enter a line that is already occupied. Here's how they can look in model form (4mm scale of course): Edited February 23, 2023 by St Enodoc 7
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted February 25, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 25, 2023 It was another Yorkshire area group NGS meeting today…and the AGM ( 5 mins or there about!). Lots of people and lots of things going on, modelling, chatting and playing trains. It was also the groups 27th birthday so there was cake!
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted February 25, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 25, 2023 I made a start on filling one of the gaps on the southern baseboard. I’ve had a couple of Kingsway Models department store kits sitting around for a while, so these were modified to fit the site. It could do with being at least another storey higher but will have to do for the time being. The bracket signal gained its extra bits, ladder etc and was sprayed white primer before the home and subsidiary arms got some colour.

RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted February 26, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 26, 2023 The department store, which will be M and S is such a nice model I think it’s replacement will be based on the kit, just at least one or two storeys higher. The bracket signal is nearing completion. Just the black paint and lenses to complete. I managed to break off a finial, thankfully I have spares.
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted February 28, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 28, 2023 The bracket signal is finished, might need a bit of weathering.
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted February 28, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 28, 2023 A delivery today from the Really useful box Co….a very long box which the long run of town houses will fit it. Even Charles House will fit in it…….and looks like every other building that isn’t glued down! A couple of squarer boxes also came which will take the Controllers, cables and layout essentials.

Label them up and make a separate list of everything. Don't ask why I recommend this.

RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted February 28, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 28, 2023 (edited) Not much done today, got the next building carcass base measured out and cut and a couple of end walls added. I’ve had quite a lot of 3D printed bits and bobs lying around in draws for a while so some got attacked with a rattle can or two. Lots of chimneys, two telephone boxes, which can be seen in the background ( The PECO ones are better ), four post boxes and some B.R.U.T.E.s. Bit sad but I’ve added the PVC retaining curtains and marked the handbrakes! Edited February 28, 2023 by acg5324

RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted March 7, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 7, 2023 Well it’s March already just over two months to the NRM show. I’ve finished the next building carcass which is now starting to gain some walls. These will be Mews type houses.

RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted March 11, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 11, 2023 Yesterday saw me brave the lack of snow in York and travel to Harrogate…well Hornbeam Park, to visit the Harrogate Model Railway and Engineering show. After a two hour wait for a train due to a tree down at ironically Hornbeam Park I eventually got there. Don’t understand why a York to Harrogate shuttle wasn’t operated but hey ho, this is the railway of today. First time I’ve been to this show and very good it was too, loads of room, good layouts and some excellent model engineering.

Pah! Wouldn't have been like that in our day... That first layout looks nice, apart from the missing backscene. More details please?

They didn’t do a guide book so I’m working on memory…….and we know where that could end up! I think it was Charnwood Forest an O gauge layout from the Soar Valley MRC. The 8th and last photos are also from the same layout. Edited March 12, 2023 by acg5324 1

lmsforever
Like the way your layout is coming along the buildings are very good and like the construction methods seeing your photos of Harrogate brought some memories back. When I organised the first Railex I was assisted by the local model engineering group and they brought some excellent models ,sadly they did not participate at any more shows but have an excellent layout at Quainton which is worth a visit.
