Arun Sharma
Many of you will know that the 1940s W&C Stock received heavy overhaul at Lancing and Eastleigh and that it did run on the mainline to get there. However on the occasions that cars and units needed to be towed a wooden matchwagon was coupled to the Ward [tube-sized buckeye] coupler on the car and the other end of the wagon coupled to a loco. My question is this, " Does anyone know what locos in both steam and diesel/electro-diesel days would have been used for these tows?". I'm guessing that it would have been something fairly large like an S15 but that is simply a guess - Any ideas anyone? ChrisH
Somewhere I have a photo of a working of a W&C car back from Eastleigh. From memory, the load is a single car with a medfit match wagon at each end, a goods brake on the back (these workings were unfitted) and powered by a 33. As these moves tended to be single cars, there would have been no need for a large loco, just something that would have made it to London Chris
RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted December 4, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 4, 2013 Never seen any pictures of them to or from Lancing but I do know that they were regular visitors to Selhurst, Wimbledon and Eastleigh. There is a picture somewhere of a single car running under its own power up and down the Alton branch!
RMweb Premium keefer Posted December 4, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 4, 2013 I think that may have been in a c.j. Marsden book, possibly "SR emus 1898-1948" or similar. Reference was made to the fact that the test runs were suspended if it rained as the cars weren't fitted with windscreen wipers!
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted December 4, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 4, 2013 I've also seen reports of them getting to Eastleigh under their own power but can't remember where. Jamie

DavidB-AU
Medfits ADB459046 and ADB461123 were used as match trucks from 1970 to 1980. Lowfits ADB452339, ADB452604, ADB452732, ADB453241 and ADB453255 were used from 1980.Some photos.http://www.flickr.com/photos/brianews/6022764883/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/74009/4263247785/ http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/paulbartlettsrailwaywagonphotographs/h1AE59520 http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/paulbartlettsrailwaywagonphotographs/h16118F79 http://daverowland.smugmug.com/RAILWAYS/BR-1983-2003-Location/Portsmouth-Fareham/i-SLwTwD6/0/L/4342-W%26CityMatchTruckADB452604-483004-124-Fratton-L.jpg The boxes were for carrying brake hoses. 452604 later had the box removed and became a W&C stores carrier. RMweb Premium Not Captain Kernow Posted December 5, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 5, 2013 The Class 488 Isle of Wight stock certainly had some main line running during testing and driver training as some of these from Haslemere show...

Speaking of which, I think two of the Lowfit W&C match wagons went to the Isle of Wight. Cheers David

RMweb Gold RFS Posted December 9, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 9, 2013 A fascinating film from 1940 showing the then new cars replacing the old ex-LSWR stuff and being taken down via the hoist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhLPiFJROSg
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted December 9, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 9, 2013 Was that Oliver Bullied in the hat and dark suit as the new stock was loaded onto the hoist. That's a fascinating film. Jamie
Arun Sharma
Interesting that in its whole existence from 1898 to 2014, there have only been three types of passenger rolling stock used on the line. The original stock which lasted till 1940 [well shown in the film - for which thanks!], the 1940 Bulleid stock and its [currently serving] replacement, the modified 1992 LT tube stock. Catkins
I thought that the 1992 stock was built for the line, as a follow on order from the London Transport stock. Or is that what you meant Ted?
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted December 10, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 10, 2013 Wasn't it a follow on order for the first Jubilee line stock and did carry BR unit numbers for while until LT took the line over. I've forgotten what class number they were. Jamie
RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted December 11, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 11, 2013 Class 483 was the new stock, add on order to the Central Line 1992 stock and to all but identical specification other than the livery and the fact they were back to back two car sets in four car formations (if that makes sense!!) I believe they were even tested on LU metals prior to being delivered to the W&C. I was fortunate to be in town in 2006 when the stock was winched out in NSE livery and winched back in again in Underground livery: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jmupton2000/sets/72157626622771199/
RMweb Premium Not Captain Kernow Posted December 11, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 11, 2013 Think you will find they were Class 482, numbered 482 501 - 482 510. Class 483 is the "new" Isle of Wight stock.
RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted December 11, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 11, 2013 Oooopppsss Typo on my part, and the class number is clearly visible on my pictures of the NSE ones coming out of the hole!!
Arun Sharma
The 1992 stock in NSE livery was built as an extra build order for the line and I believe originally was identical apart from colour to the Central Line 1992 stock. However, since then the central line version stock has been modified for automatic train operation and thus is no longer compatible with the W&C stock. I don't know whether the body shell [at the cab end] mods and bogie mods done to the 1992 Central Line stock have been replicated on the W&C cars. The handrails etc inside the cars are of course red on the Central Line stock and Teal blue/green on the W&C stock.
RMweb Premium Not Captain Kernow Posted January 1, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 1, 2014 Having some spare time over the Christmas holiday I found this working at Reading: - At that time there was so much loco variety to be seen I never bothered looking at wagons - I wish now I had paid more attention to the match wagons and brake vans on this working!

Edit - apologies - just seen post #8 (would make a great subject for a limited edition 00 release - hint, hint ) Edited January 1, 2014 by Southernman46
RMweb Premium Not Captain Kernow Posted January 1, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 1, 2014 This particular trip was from Swindon. I think three or four were dealt with there instead of Eastleigh for some reason.
