mark axlecounter
Well done a bit more the motion is now on one side it free runs ok but long way off yet
MarkC
Watching 44767's valve gear in motion is fascinating. it all seems so convoluted when compared to the classic Walschaerts gear. I'm following this thread with great interest
Horsetan
It's actually all very logical. The bonus for "axelcounter" is that he doesn't have to worry about coupling or connecting rods as the RTR ones are already in place.

mark axlecounter
That is really good I have always liked this loco I saw it at elr triple heading with another two I saw it and I wanted a model of it but with no avail So now after about ten years I am going to make one. I did think of building a kit from the old Alan Gibbson kit but thought that the Hornby one would be ok for this and also a bit easy like horsetan says less rods and setting the loco up Here is another pic of the unfinished side still need to put the bracket on and tidy up bits
mark axlecounter
I want to say thanks to everyone who has helped me do this loco from the people on here giving advice and help and a big thanks has to go to my partner Lisa if wasn't for her I would not have the kit So thanks to everyone
Horsetan
Well done. See, it's easier than you think! BTW, I think you need to shift the main return crank forwards so that it slants towards the front of the loco. Same goes for the other side. mark axlecounter
It's not that easy to move the return crank I'm worried about it lol just trying to fit the rocker now then fine ajustment then the other side can be done
RMweb Gold farren Posted January 16, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 16, 2014 very nice work how is it attached to the RTR chassis? it looks like a screw and glue have been used or is the screw part of the chassis
mark axlecounter
It's the the motion screw with a brass plate formed to hold the tube what is soldered to the reverser lever so if I ever need to take it off I can it's a good but of kit when the wheels move and the motion moves aswell I have cleaned it up abit from the pic when I have put the rocker bracket on then I will take some more I have moved the return crank so it's forward now it looks better now a lot better
mark axlecounter
Here is the side done just need to clean it up. I have moved the reverser back so the drop link is now sloping ( thanks for the advice horsetan ) forward I have tested it and it works Now I need to do the other side more pics will come soon
Horsetan
That looks so much better. You'll get the correct synchronisation now.
Pete Harvey
That looks very good but I think the outer rod pivot on the crank not the inner, should line up with the centre of the driving wheel? Pete
Horsetan
...I think the outer rod pivot on the crank not the inner, should line up with the centre of the driving wheel? Not according to my photos of the real thing it doesn't! The inner crank slants forward, whilst the outer crank slants toward the back. Neither lines up with the axle centre. This goes for inside Stephenson's as well.
mark axlecounter
I have cleaned up the motion now and tonight I'm at Daisyfield signalbox ( grabbing a Sunday ) doing the other side I have took my time on this one I have some more pics of the new motion
mark axlecounter
I still need to do a lot more work on the motion but the main bits are on then I need to start on the body and the tender but hopefully I will be putting more pics onto here
Horsetan
Is there no way of taking off the remains of the old vac. pump drive rod bracket from the crosshead?
Pete Harvey
ok Horsetan Not having any pictures of the real loco @ 90° to the rods it's not easy to see exactly how they should go. Looking good Alex. Pete
Horsetan
ok Horsetan Not having any pictures of the real loco @ 90° to the rods it's not easy to see exactly how they should go..... mark axlecounter
I have done a bit more today I am going to weather it when I get chance so I don't need to worry about missing paint. Well today I have put a comet chimney on it ( looks better ) and detailed the body a bit. Lots more to do yet but it's getting there slowly here are some pics
Horsetan
I see you've kept to the period where 44767 did not carry electric lighting.....or will you be adding that later? I particularly like the degree of colour separation between smokebox and boiler, although I had thought the colour / sheen of the smokebox should be more that of the boiler, and the boiler colour should be used on the smokebox....... It does work quite well as it is. Edited January 21, 2014 by Horsetan
mark axlecounter
I'm not putting the electric lighting on. my layout is set in around the mid 60s Also I need to tone the smokebox down I need to weather it a bit more same as the cab I will do that when I get home tonight hopefully
