I know all this Sodor stuff is related to Reverend Awdry's books but where does all of this fictional history of the island come from? Do you just make it up yourself, or did Awdry publish it in other books? It wasn't in the original books as far as I know, but it is around 45 years since I read them.

Sooo Wilbert and his brother George wrote up a big history of the island, notable people, and the railways, as well as drawing up the map. He used to give a lecture on it, the notes for which are held at the NGRM in Tywyn as part of the Awdry study.

I've taken the background of the stories and most of the book, then mixed it up with some of my own ideas, changing dates, numbers etc. to suit what I want to model. I think he was partially constrained by framing the stories as if they were happening contemporaneously, so I've just rearranged things to how I want them to be. I enjoy the world-building aspect of it.

Any accusations that I do this in order to justify building more locos are well-founded.

Hey, Corbs? Just asking for reference purposes, but it looks like the "Woolworths" have quite a short cab, right? How did you attach the Stanier cab on the frames? Did you just hack the whole Maunsell cab off, frames and all?

And connected to that, how did you go about bodging the new connection between loco and tender?

Yeah I removed the cab and then cut the back of the footplate off with the razor saw, then glued the Stanier cab and running plate on.

I don't remember exactly how I did the previous tender coupling but it involved styrene and I imagine this one will too.

Okay then; I was planning something similar for my Woolworth, but with an LNER cab.... I actually have a spare of a 3D printed J21 bodyshell that I got a while ago, now that I think about it...

Incidentally, I ended up changing plans and getting a second Woolly for my hack.

Me still waiting for progress on Corbs’ take on James, the Scottish Twins, Toby and Oliver, perhaps in future, in between major modelling projects, focus on some of the easier ones, or just smaller jobs, like repainting or relettering stock.

Just some smaller jobs when there’s not much free time to get the bigger stuff done. Well that’s what I tend to do

If you take Awdry's other writings, James is supposed to be a L&Y 28 with a stretched frame to accommodate the pilot.   That's probably intention, though.

Post hoc reasoning, I suspect.

Here we go, some buffers on and pics in a much brighter room! The red rods really set it off for me, much better. Bufferbeams not that neat but might get a slap with the weathering powders.

Managed to colour the whistle in which is nice.

I know I'm quite late on the scene - this post came out when I was five years old - but realistically, what is this beautiful looking loco meant to be?! The e2 would be too expensive to rebuild in this format...

Whats the AU behind this one, I wonder.

I guess that in this verse, the Royal Mail set up its' own Railway Department, presumably with running rights over (presumably) the Island of Sodor, if not the entire national network?

Not far off, the rough idea is it's a repaint for a loco assigned to a specific mail train duty (to celebrate launch of the service).

Here is 405 'James Catherick' now with name and numberplates courtesy of LRS.

A trio of Woolworths N Class kits!

403 Thorkell, 405 James Catherick, 407 Sigrid.

I fashioned a crude drawbar from styrene and found a backhead in a spares box.

They all need RC gear fitting before they can stretch their legs on the big layout.....

Sooooo with 405 now in the queue for some serious soldering (along with about 6 other locos awaiting conversion), I feel the need to scratch another itch that's been hanging around for a while.

I bought a previous-generation Hornby 'King' some time ago to use as the basis for the second 'Hatt 7' build, the same class as 'Westlin' here:

C1DCB293-D8C0-47CF-AE15-8D1D812FBDD4_1_105_c.jpeg.09d4dcafa50cde0291fa1dd92660a314.jpeg

Actually, a 'Super 7' as this new loco is to be built with the same wheels, boiler and frame layout, but instead of being a 4-cylinder simple with Walschaerts valve gear, this will become a compound with Lentz rotary valve gear alongside an enlarged steam circuit, double kylchap and possibly ACFI feedwater heating too.

The intention is that this becomes the stepping stone to the mixed traffic 4-8-0 'Thorfinn the Mighty'.

The GWR-style cab was the first thing to go, to be replaced with a Hatt cab (imitated by Fowler and Stanier, of course....).

The cylinders are the ones off the Hornby P2 and were filed to fit in the gap, but they sit too low and will need packing out to bring the centre of the cylinder in line with the axle...

... This in turn meant that for the loco to stay within gauge, the boiler can't go any higher (note I am also losing the GWR bonnet in favour of a lower profile dome), the solution has been to notch the running board like so:

The flattened cylinder tops now forming part of the running board.

I rather like it and prefer this to a split-height running board. I think the streamlined corners of the cylinders helps.

There is an alternative, the hypertaper boiler. Tapering is good right? So more tapering must be better...
