gazmanjack
Today (05/05/13) the Rail Transport Museum ran a train to Bowral and Mossvale from Sydney to celebrate 150 years of the district. The train is known as the 'Southern Highlander' and today it had two locomotives double heading, 3642 and 3265. Unfortunately due to maintenance issues, 3830 could not haul this train, which would have been awesome to say the least. But either way, it did provide a day for some photography... ^ 3642 & 3265 almost ready to depart Revesby enroute to the Southern Highlands. ^ The 'Southern Highlander' rounding the curved viaduct just south of Burradoo. ^ Clearing the viaduct, full steam ahead ! ^ Passing by at speed. ^ 3642, 3265 & water gin reversing into Mossvale triangle, passing a few 81 Class locos and coal hoppers. ^ 3642 &3265 reversing around it's train on the loop. The train (coaches) is stabled along the platform. ^ Locos and water gin cutting across the 'UP' line, heading to the siding to take on water. ^ Maintenance crew take to 3642 with lubricants as the water gin takes on water. ^ Taking on water. above & below, Behind the scene. What the public doesn't see... ^ 3265, through the trees. ^ Although out of focus, this has to be one of my favourite shots. I call it 'Motion'. Cheers, Gary.
DavidB-AU
Very unusual the 36 was leading. Usual practice is for the smaller loco to lead. Cheers David
69843
This was due to the 32 having an intermittent radio problem, meaning it wasn't showing up on the system. I'll pass on some shots tomorrow when I have internet again (good ol' smartphone ftp the rescue).
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted May 5, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 5, 2013 (edited) Already explained for this occasion. Nothing to do with ownership - the smaller loco usually leads to permit both crews the best sighting of the road and signals ahead. You try sighting signals from anything small when you're inside something big Edited May 5, 2013 by Gwiwer
69843
It is odd, but as I said above, 3265 had a failed radio, meaning it couldn't lead (this is straight from the fitter, who is a PHM volunteer).
gazmanjack
Here is a link to some video I did yesterday ; Unfortunately the quality is NOT as good on youtube as it is at home on my pc. Hmmm ?? Considering some of the pics above were taken from the video I made, youtube's quality has me puzzled... Just a pity that I didn't have my tripod with me, but that doesn't count for the un-sharpness of youtube's quality. Cheers, Gary.
69843
And here are my contributions to a wonderful trip: 1. Artsy shot of 3265 and 3642 standing at Central 2.3642 stands at the head of the train, having had the headboard just fitted and polished 3. The cool Sydney morning meant that the steam was hanging around the engines a bit more 4.The cool weather resulted in a bit of water in the cylinders, resulting in both engines venting their cylinder drain cocks the length of the platform, providing the spectical of a steam ball going up the entire platform. 5. The train heads off to the first stop of Revesby with a wonderful amount of smoke.
DavidB-AU
Southern Downs Steam Railway C17 971 made its first run into Toowoomba today. With QR Heritage C17 974 now back in service, there a now chance of seeing double headed C17s on the main line! Cheers David
gazmanjack
Hi David, Great video ! Must say that the old coaches like to pitch a little to the left and right on the 3'6" !! Will this train be a regular feature on this line ? Cheers, Gary.
DavidB-AU
SDSR mainly runs to Stanthorpe and Wallangarra, but there is a proposed trip to Toowoomba for the Carnival of Flowers in September. Cheers David
gazmanjack
Ah, Wallangarra. My father grew up there many moons ago, that is when it was called Jennings, no Wallangarra, no Jennings, no Wallangarra.... All we need now is the SRA of NSW to repair the line fromTenterfield to Wallangarra and throw on a NSW Special... Wishful thinking on my behalf !! Cheers for the info. Gary. 69843
Some shots of todays Rail Motor Society 621/721 railtour along the Sydney Metro Goods Line Hurlstone Park, and the train heads along the goods line towards Botany Bay Goods Terminal Marrickville, and the train heads back the opposite way into the Sun, and back on up to Paterson. And I stuffed the only freight train to pass in 3 hours! Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia liveried GL 105 and GreenTrains liveried RL 303 (owned by Qube Logistics) pass Marrickville with a container train bound for Minto. Edit-Video now up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eT4is0f5h8I (Edit 2: also fixed CL to GL-odd slip, as they look totally different) (Edit 3: location ammended) Edited May 25, 2013 by 69843

DavidB-AU
The other main line certified C17 back in action. This is a very professional looking video! Cheers David
SRman
Nice. I have ridden behind the Brown Bomber a few times, with one memorable - and very long - trip up the Toowoomba ranges.
DavidB-AU
Nice. I have ridden behind the Brown Bomber a few times, with one memorable - and very long - trip up the Toowoomba ranges. 974 could be doing that in September for the Carnival of Flowers if the Bettys go into the paint shop before then. There is a chance both C17s could be in Toowoomba on the same day. Cheers David
gazmanjack
Too think that the C17 video was 'professional' and the double heading 32 Class wasn't... !! I did notice the running of the dual gauge at 1:39 - 2:30 and 8:55 to the end on the C17 video, interesting. Both very good videos. Thanks for posting. Cheers, Gary. SRman
The Pinkenba line brings back a few memories as well. In the early '80s I was using it regularly to Airport station, when I was working the old Airport Director's Office. That was in the days of diesel-hauled Evans cars. Those 'American' cars attached to 974 used to be quite comfortable to ride in, albeit somewhat sooty behind a steam locomotive!! ;-) The station at Clayfield always amused me as the embossed enamel signs said "Clayfield" in paint but "Wynnum North" in the embossing!!
