RMweb Premium zarniwhoop Posted June 2, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 2, 2022 Technically O/T, but perhaps of interest to those in the UK - I'm just watching Tuesday night's Natural World - Butterflies, A Very British Obsession (BBC4), a repeat from 2011. Should be available on iplayer for a while.
RMweb Gold Downendian Posted June 15, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 15, 2022 (edited) Perhaps deserving it’s own thread - Moths are out - however my moth identification skills obviously inferior to British butterflies. A scarlet tiger moth (never heard of it before) taken on my regular dog walk earlier in the week. sb67
Visited Sandwich bay at the weekend, plenty of Butterflies about and my first sighting of a Marbled white, they had a good night Moth Trapping too. 😃 Poplar Hawk Moth. Scorched Wing Moth. Not sure what Skipper this is. Marbled White and Meadow Brown (I think!) Tortoiseshell. Another Skipper, not sure which one.. RMweb Premium zarniwhoop Posted June 23, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 23, 2022 Nice pics, enough to prompt me to dig out some of my reference books. For the "not sure", I guess a small skipper - the distinguishing features of the similar essex skipper are "probably smaller" and "underside tips of antennae are black". For the "another skipper", if it was bigger I would guess a large skipper, if not then probably small skipper or essex skipper. 2

Thank you, I can never tell the difference with the Skippers, especially when they don't land for very long! I was lucky to get those photo's!
sb67
I went for a walk over my local park yesterday and there were so many Skippers and Meadow Brown around, very unusually not one other butterfly! Can any one tell me if the plant the Skipper is on is Yellow Rattle? I need to collect some seeds!

RMweb Premium zarniwhoop Posted July 9, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 9, 2022 Again, I can't provide my own pics (don't get out much now), but for anyone else in sussex who is interested, there are current and historic sightings on the website of the local branch of Butterfly Conservation: https://www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk/sightings/
tigerburnie
We have a lot of Ringlet butterflies on the edge of the village near the tattie fields, never seen so many before.
The Lurker
Until this summer, I'd never seen a marbled white - once I'd seen one, I saw plenty. Most of the others I see remain unidentified as they don't stay still long enough. Perhaps I should have my phone ready when I next do my regular walk back from dropping the car for Mrs Lurker to use later in the day
sb67
A nice selection of Butterflies seen over Belfairs Woods, Essex last weekend. There were also Purple Emperors around but we couldn't find them. First time I've seen White Admirals and a Heath Fritillary. A very fresh Comma. White Admiral. Essex Skipper ( I think!) Lime Hawk Moth. Heath Fritillary. White Admiral.
