If you need oil stains, mix a bit of black and brown with some gloss, then thin the hell out of it.

Thank you, I'll give that a go.

Steve, the results you are showing on this thread really are excellent. The colour fade on the Ruston is spot on.

Thanks David. I'm looking forward to having a go at using powders only on the other Ruston.

Started fading the paint on the Ruston using Sand and White weathering powder, the photo's show I need to work the powders in a bit more but it's a start. There's no work done anywhere else yet.

Thank you Rob, do you still use the fibreglass pencil to work back any weathering on a loco? Guess I could but very gently.

Hi Steve.

Not on the steel parts. Only locos I used the fibreglass pencil on are the recent J70s, on the wooden parts.

Try further with a clean brush. Work from the edges back to the centre.

Thank you Rob. I do like working with the powders, I had a go at some airbrushing earlier which seemed a lot more scary!

I put the Ruston away for a bit and fired up the airbrush this afternoon, all have had some Railmatch Frame Dirt on the underframe then a mix of Frame Dirt and Weathered Black on the sides and with more weathered black added to the mix the tops were done. Not sure what next, I guess some powders and also some grease effects on the underframes.

Very very nice Steve. I like the subtle scaling on the austerity.

Did you remove some airbrushed paint on the Terrier? Looks good.

Thank you. I did from the sides, then airbrushed a mist over it again to give the impression the sides have been cleaned at some point. I'm enjoying the weathering, I like using the Powders a lot but the airbrush does give the even coating of soot and dirt I've seen in so many photos. Got to leave them alone for a few days now!

I struggle with this bit. There isnt a single vehicle in my stud which I haven't almost ruined through impatience!!

I must say, I agree. I also am developing a love of weathering. I used to see it as desirable, but a chore. I resisted and was very anti airbrush but now I have one...It has changed things.

After the various bits of weathering I' now 'upgrading' some old Hornby VDA Vans. I know they are light years away from the Bachamnn version but I've got them and, after upgrading the OAA's I thought I would see what I can do.

I'm not exactly sure what to represent, they will all probably get a respray and I might paint a white roof on one and I would like a departmental version. I experimented on a paint fade on one so I might leave that one. I'm aiming for vans around in the late 80's-90's.

First up reducing the ride height and fixing the wheel trucks.

Hi Steve,

They don't scrub up too badly with a bit of work but please please get rid of that totally ficticious vent in the middle of the roof.

Look forward to see what you do with them.

Stu

First thing I did to mine when I got them, out with a small file

Thanks Stu, the vent thingy will def go! I'll leave one in the light grey livery but the others I'm not too sure about. I've been looking for a match for the dark grey some were painted and also any departmental variants to base them on.

I've had the Dremmel out and removed the bit that the wheel truck sits on. Having removed the couplings from the wheel truck too, the truck was then glued back on using Araldite Metal. This takes the height down to something a bit more prototypical, not perfect I know, but ok for me. They all run fine and the longer, now fixed wheelbase isn't a problem on my small layouts.

Next will be removing the vent thing.

I filed down the "vents" until there was just a strip of plastic left and gave the roofs an undercoat. I tried Vallajo acrylic and over thinned the first one!

A bit more sanding to do on some.

I was going to paint one wagon with a white roof as per the Rowntrees VDA's so after a bit more sanding I might give it another coat and leave that one.

I decided to try some AK worn effects fluid on a couple of the vans. I don't think it's too bad, bit more work needed though I feel.

A great thread that I'm enjoying following!

This looks very interesting and a product I've not heard of before. Do you spray it on and then mess about with it? I guess it'll work on any colour?

Thanks

Will

Thank you. Yep, you paint your base colour, let it dry thoroughly, then a couple of coats of the fluid, let that dry, then your top coat, which should be waterbased according to the instructions. When thats dry re wet it and rub away until you get the effect you want. I've seen people do similar using hairspray but not tried that myself.

I've tried the hairspray method, but getting BR Bauxite off your forehead is a bit of a b*gger. .

The current state of play with the vans. I've resprayed two of them Railmatch freight brown, a couple of coats of Klear then transfers and next up another coat of Klear then Matt varnish.

With hindsight I would have liked a more faded, lighter brown appearance to one at least, not sure how to get that now though, never mind.
