RMweb Premium MJI Posted March 23, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 23, 2019 Well this was difficult to find. No piccies yet but so far I have 3 GWR150 coaches under way BSK and 1 TSO in primer. 1 TSO being tidied up in the joins. Excess parts BG is coming along well (in my MR mark 2 set with a Triang Hornby RMB) Also a BFK is coming along. Just received from Replica 3 underframe kits for the older style cylinders for the GWR 150 set, 2 TSO interiors and 5 glazing packs. Will be letter writing to Shawplan for the Laserglaze, tried phoning 20 times last week.
RMweb Premium MJI Posted November 23, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 23, 2019 Spent > £50 on Shawplan today. Should be able to finish the WR set now except BSO.
RMweb Premium MJI Posted November 24, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 24, 2019 Now have 6 vehicles finished except for hand rails and gangways for my Western Region aircon set. The other 3 need 1xobtaining, 1xfinish converting and 1xMk 2 frames. Worked out need 4 TSO frames and 5 TSO glazings to finish all my Airfix aircons. Now need to work out IF I need any 2D BSOs or if I can sacrifice them for a 2E TSO.

muddy water
No worries! Great to see your modelling of carriages. I have taken notes for my own stock! Keep up from the good work!
westie7
Interesting work I have some of the shawplan MK2 a-c frames, and for the base and am pondering about whether to use an Airfix mk2d, hack out the windows carve the solebar, or a Lima mk2b and accept the length issue

What can you get cheap? Lima are a lot of work, but underframe is OK. Airfix to 2C (too long for 2B) is more underframe work. I know of 2Cs made from Bachmann 2A cut and shut, Lima 2B, Airfix 2D, Hornby 2E. But I also worked out old Hornby 2s are doable but a lot of work.
RMweb Gold griffgriff Posted December 3, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 3, 2019 A mk2b and a mk2c are the same length. Both possible from a mk2d but with a lot of work. I’ve had some success sorting out the body shape a ‘moulding seam scraper’. The mk2z and mk2a were the shorties. Griff
westie7
Based on cheapness I was thinking of a Lima, frames overlaid, windows marked out then cut out. Some mods to the underframes and seam joins.

Griff I thought the 2C was 6" longer, but just checked 2B 7" longer than 2_A Limas do do up quite nicely . But with WR 2C Airfix are better as they tended to run with aircon stock

One bit of advice, use Shawplan frames but remove the moulded internal frame then file the Lima window hole until frame is half width, that will be OK when sanded flat. Lima holes are slightly too small

A mix of A's and B's with the odd C in there. Cheers Oh dear that will be a pain as the old Hornby 2s do not mix well looks wise with Lima, too late for me with a 2 x 2a, 1 x 2b, 5 or so 2c set. Too many Lima to change to something else. Hornby 2/2a are more accurate in dimensions than Lima. Lima bodies can be lowered in height but didn't realise when I started and do not fancy doing it with a pile of resprayed. I THINK they are about 1mm too high and require that removed from the bottom of the side and reprofiled. One thing you COULD try for 2B and early 2C is Airfix with Shawplan frames, and lots of bits chopped off the underframe and MJT roof vents 2B don't have the hatch AFAIR. Late 2C are difficult as no toilet frames available. They are NOT 2D sized, top is 2D location, bottom is vent style window (not aircon) bottom. If I do any more will experiment with plastic card. But try a Lima and Hornby together and see what you think. You may be fine, or think aghhh. I can't happily run Airfix and LIma aircons together, so I don't. My ER set is 2D, my WR set 2CDEF, my MR set 2F and 3a (Lima Jouef). Not sure what to do for another WR aircon set as down to 2.5 BSOs and 2 FOs, and I would need at least 6 more TSOs, and 2 BFKs. Remember that consitancy is more important than absolute accuracy, so my WR 2B set has no problems being Lima.
RMweb Gold Richard_A Posted December 4, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 4, 2019 If anyone wants some airfix mk2ds I have a rake of 8 I'm considering selling as my interest is WR before the aircons arrived.

RMweb Premium MJI Posted December 8, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 8, 2019 After some investigation I need at least one more 2C MR rake and 1 or 2 WR Aircon sets, also found an ER set visiting WR with 2D TSO E5690. Now trying to decide which set, two set of WR stock has TSOs 2F 2E 2D but more likely to go for 1 twin BFK set, or 2, one with 2A 2D BFK one with 2D 2D BFK. One set I like is 47 1 RBR * 2E FO # 2F TSO 2E TSO 2E TSO 2D BFK # 2A BFK * 2D TSO * 2E TSO # 2F TSO # 1 GUV * * Got # Can make Need 3 more TSOs and another 47 Or I can sneeze and add a 45/1 a 2F FO 2A TSO and remove a couple of 2A (actually remove the 2A as it is a miswritten 2E 5258 and 5852) 7 vehicles the same
RMweb Premium MJI Posted December 15, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 15, 2019 Currently glazing a 2F FO and a 2E TSO, also chasing Brian for the frames for the 2C BSO. Should be able to post a few pictures next weekend of the 6 complete and 2 being worked on , all Airfix, all modified, and one donor is in two vehicles a 2E TSO and a 2D BFK
RMweb Premium MJI Posted December 22, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 22, 2019 Brian chasing is under way, reminder tonight as I want nearly £200 worth of detailing bits. Just sticking window frames on W3415, the second FO in the WR set, but varnish is off. Got E5637 and E5730 out of the Eastern region set to detail, so far only 1 TSO, the FK the BG and Bar are detailed, the remaining TSOs are as Airfix intended. I am not starting on Aircon 3 until both Aircon 1 (last 2) and Aircon 2 (last 4) are ready for painting. I also need some new gloss varnish as mine has disappeared. Aircon 3 will have two consecutive conversions. One is 2A BFK and 2D BFK Other is 2D 2E 2F TSOs Was hoping for a good long bash at things but overtime is required including tomorrow. So sitting at a PC trying to work things out in my head.
RMweb Premium MJI Posted January 11, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 11, 2020 Another reminder sent to Shawplan for 8 set of frames and 17 sets of Laseglaze Started on the 2 BFKs will take pictures but need to extract them from the telephone. Started with a paint strip of a badly painted Hornby BFK, my fault. The removal of the sides from the roof and end of the half BSO. I saw into the roof just above the strip and will file down. Corridor side first remove 4mm between guards door and window 1, 4mm between the two windows and 8mm between window 2 and the double doors. Airfix plastic glues really well so already assembling. |D| |D| -4 [W] -4 [W] -8 |D|D|
