Great pictures as usual David.  c6820 is unusual.  I don't think I ever saw Vac piped only van in railfreight . Think I've seen them in Dutch but this is a first for me

Morpeth newly painted brake van 18th April 85 C6820

Interesting that this van had been totally repainted when I recorded it in 1991 https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brbrakediag507/e2a7d245c  Many went decades without repainting. I did see a Railfreight CAP - although it had become a ZTP in 1989 https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brbrakediag507/e1297e739  I agree very unusual.

I don’t recall seeing these either. It also has the very short lived application of wrap around full yellow end (covers the cab sides).

Further to the DMU corrections, David, C1032 & C1033 are a Class 105/101 hybrid, rather than a 105 pair. I'm sure that (somewhere) I would be able to locate set formations from that time and tell you what vehicles Norwich set 57 was - but, at present, I have no idea where to look!  😁

According to Longman - BRITISH RAILWAYS First Generation DMUs, Norwich 32A set 57 for 1972 has E51279 as class 105 power power car, paired with class 105 trailer E56436 - however with the proviso the trailer cars were swapped around regularly and the set number remained with the power car. Presumably, the class 101 was a temporary pairing. However 32A had 12 class 101 sets at the time (5 of which were power twins), as well as 10 class 100 GRCW sets so presumably hybrids occurred from time to time. It’s not very clear, but the class 101 car in the photo appears to be a driving trailer - for 1972-3 (from Railcar.co. uk) we have a choice of E56074, E56362,4,5,9,80 or 83.

Thanks Paul

Quite confusing for staff as you always assumed obviously incorrectly that raifreight ones along with the bauxite with yellow side panel vans were air piped

I realise we're not quite there yet but just an early 'congratulations' to Dave for reaching 1000 pages!

(I'd hoped this post may have tipped over to the new page, oh well😊)

Good evening, David. That’s an excellent selection of photo’s of Steamtown, Carnforth. In C3749, of preserved LNER A4, 4498, Sir Nigel Gresley, on the 25th March, 1978, you have taken a superb and well composed portrait shot of the locomotive.

The photo’s of the West Highland line, at Bridge of Orchy and Gorton, are superb, and full of atmosphere. In C6856, at Bridge of Orchy, with 37259 and 37121, on the special Newcastle to Fort William train, on the 11th May, 1985, that’s a lovely photo’, and, unless I’m seeing things, the signal appears to be leaning slightly to the left.

What a great set of photo’s follows, with the first two photo’s taken at Gonalston crossing, just east of Lowdham on the Nottingham to Lincoln line, with the rest at Lincoln. In the last photo’, at Lincoln goods coal handling plant, in April, 1969, you have a superb photo’, which shows lots of activity, and how coal wagons were unloaded into lorries by way of the hoist and conveyor belts. What a fantastic model it would make, especially it could be made to work.

Finally, that’s a splendid selection of photo’s of High Dyke. In the first photo’ of a Class 45, on a down Pullman service, in April, 1963, your Dad has taken a delightful photo’, and I’m left wondering if the train was The Master Cutler?

With warmest regards,

Rob.

I do so enjoy your early preservation photos, I suppose as they are from my teenage years and I was really getting into the hobby then - it seemed so exciting!  A great nostalgia trip for me every time you post some of them, thank you.

Not that it is any help (whatsoever) but, in March 1972, 51279 was running with 56101 - which was a Gloucester driving trailer.

Oh, and the 'Deltic' in J4007 is 55 004 (long nameplate, oval crest).

Is it just me or is page 999 longer than the others!

Congratulations to Dave from me too, although it would also be fitting for Rob (Market 65) to tip us over into the 'new millennium'  :) with one of his eloquently written posts.😃

C9404: You would need to be brave to do the whole journey! Is that about the time of the Penmanshiel collapse, otherwise it seems like a slightly strange route.

No, it was just routed that way at the time.

Excellent pictures again David.  By the time I signed the Blyth and Tyne most of the pits had gone as well as the 14s. As with the Harton electric railway I can't understand why I didn't go to see them

I see your thread is on the verge of a thousand pages well done and what an absolute pleasure it's been reading the 999 so far
