RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted February 1, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 1, 2010 Saturday 30 Jan. Picked a mate up at Helsby so made sure I got there for the hippo shots. 175003 on 1D32, 07:50, Manchester Piccadilly - Llandudno 175104 on 1H83, 07:45, Llandudno - Manchester Piccadilly - departing as Bill Bolsover pokes his nose 'round the corner 66623, Bill Bolsover, on 4F02, 07:22, Garston - Ellesmere Port Manisty Wharf empty HHAs - unusual to get a shot with the signals at danger As it was the Bardon liveried one I chased it to Ellesmere Port docks Then over to Wales, a brief excursion from the cabin, down to holywell Junction for the morning drag 57313 and 390027, Virgin Buccaneer, on 1D83, 08:50, London Euston - Holyhead which was closely followed by 158823 on 1D12, 09:09, Birmingham International - Holyhead The afternoon drag was another ATW 57/3 and we decided to try an artistic shot for a change ... Bagillt 158818 on 1D15, 15:09, Birmingham International - Holyhead 57315 and 390027, Virgin Buccaneer, on 1A55, 14:36, Holyhead - London Euston (the non resized and quality reduced version is a lot better than this) Sunday 31 January, as W&S are using some Virgin coaches I headed to Wrexham to see the 13:11 departure and the 13:30 arrival, the 13:11 was caped due to low fuel, the 13:30 arrival was turned back as a retimed 13:51 departure. 82304 and 67014, Thomas Telford, on 5P52, 12:42, Wrexham General bays - Wrexham General platform 1 ECS - Caped due to low fuel The snow started to fall ... 175009 on 1V57, 10:20, Holyhead - Cardiff Central 158841 on 1D10, 10:50, Birmingham New Street - Chester The snow got worse, the gen said 67010 was on its way, with the Virgin coaches and the Chiltern DVT to boot.... The barriers dropped, and the ??"$"??$ing lens misted up - luckily I'd left the spare lenses in the car, several hundred yards away 67010 and 82302 on 1J41, 08:37, London Marylebone - Wrexham General 158818 on 1G23, 13:22, Chester - Birmingham New Street As mentioned above, rather than shunt across 67010/82302 reversed to form 1P52, 13:51, Wrexham General - London Marylebone so I had a second bite of the cherry although the sun had moved to the wrong side. The rake was 82302, 10255 (W&S), 12054 (Virgin), 12124 (Virgin), 12094 (Virgin) and 67010 The points between the Chester main line and the Bidston line are now self-normalising, meaning they return to the straight route (in this case) and trap automatically (most power box worked points will remain in the position last used until required by another move, except traps) - this happened after the above train left, as I packed the cameras away I noticed they had reversed again so, cameras ready again for .... (and the lens misted again but I had a spare by now !) 66107 on 6L44, 13:00, Bidston - Bescot infrastructure ex relaying at Seacombe Junction (to loop) Also met 37401 off here

Steadfast
Lovely bit of variety there Dave - I do like mismatched trains like the ATW Pendo drags and the VT mk3s on the W&S. If it were modelled, they'd tell you it was wrong! Is that rust on the front of 66623 or a pile of coal from the loaders? It's a big patch if it is rust! cheers jo

Think it's coal - the loaders are conveyors and shovels btw.
Steadfast
Thanks Dave, I'd noticed this kind of thing with stone trains before, and the light cluster mount does give a nice ledge for it to mound up on. cheers jo
James Hilton
How easy is it to get down to Ellesmere Port for access? I want to do a bit of research for my proposed MSC based layout in the future and a wander round with a few photos of the area would be really helpful - just don't want to turn up and find it's all inside private land! How much can you see from the road/public land?

How much can you see from the road/public land? The line into Manisty is on public land for a couple of hundred yards but you won't see much, the other MSC stuff by Ellesmere Port box and down to Stanlow is on a private, Shell, road and you will get the security chasing you off. Doubt the Chiltern stuff will be used on any W&S in December as we are getting six rakes by all accounts Plus by then all the W&S coaches will be sorted , this mixed set wont be about after Set Four has been repaired at Aylesbury should be by the weekend.
