Farish 25/2 - Which Laira locos does it match?

Not being a class 25 expect, and knowing there are all sorts of detail differences between different batches and builders, any 25 experts able to help?

For my Cornish-based layout I need at least one and preferable two Rats to run alongside the Westerns and Peaks, and I'd like to renumber as one of the machines allocated to Laira in around 74-76.

Looking at referece books such as John Vaughans' "Diesels in the Duchy" 25223 and 25048 show up frequently (Was the latter actually a 25/2 at all? Has the roof-mounted air horns, so it looks vaguely 25/2-shaped.  See what I mean about not being a 25 expert?).

Hi Tim,

Firstly I can say I am in absolutely no way a Class 25 expert so apologies there, but I looked at trying to shoehorn a Laira example onto my layout set a little later than yours without any real justification in the end. But the possibles that did turn up for me were 25223, 224 & 225. All were in the West Country through the mid to late 70's if I remember. There is a Sulzer website which has some good information, www.derbysulzers.com

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Stu.

Ones that immediately spring to mind are 25155/206/207 and 326 (25/2)

or

25048/052/057/058/080/222/223/224/225 (25/1)

It doesn't work that way I'm afraid.

25/1 and 25/2 distinctions are defined by invisible characteristics - electrical machines.

People use the 25/1 and 25/2 shorthand to mean the body styles.  Which is essentially what you want and need.

The 25050 and 25223 ilk are the old body style with perforated sides and all the grilles, nose doors, 2 1/2 windscreens and so on.

25145, 25260, 25326 etc are the tidied-up sort, with grilles at cantrail level, three windscreens and no cab nose doors.

Derby Sulzers website as linked above gives you definitive details of what numbers had what body styles:

Confusing isn't it???

As Chard says its the internals and although 25048 is a 25/1 and 25223 is a 25/2 they are externally similar

Of those listed above 25/1s 25048/052/057/058 and 25/2 222/223/224/225 are all possibilities

As is my favourite 7577/25227 see http://www.derbysulzers.com/7577exeter73.jpg

Things to watch out for are the plating over of the boiler room grille (that's the oblong one behind the B end cab door - facing us in the above photo - and plating over of boiler filler access steps although I suspect most if not all were done by this era

Cheers

Phil

Thanks for the help so far.

The most noticable thing I've seen in photos is the plating over of the nose doors; Vaughan's "Diesels in the Duchy" shows 048 and 225 with plated doors, and 223 with the original doors in n place

Well, a blue 25/2 arrived from Hattons today.

Plated over boiler vent, and plated over front gangway doors; which looks as though it matches late 70s photos of 25048, 25052, 25223 and 25225. (Though there are earlier photos that show 223 with the front ganway doors in place)

Thanks again.  223 looks ex-works in that photo; presumably had the gangway doors plated over on passing through works that year.

And some great photos in that stream - love the Western on freight climbing out of Lostwithiel towards Par.
