Weather pics

A bit of a cheat this one, but it did fulfil my ambition to photograph lightning. I videoed the storm in HD and then did a frame capture to get my shot. The storm was at Shanklin, Isle of Wight in early August 2013

Not a single rumble of thunder but what a light show!

The pics are of a back-building thunderstorm just off the coast of Boulogne last Friday night...

Feel free to chime in with your interesting weather pics.

I thought the location looked a bit too exotic for Stafford ;)

Here's one of mine from last week. Nothing dramatic, just hazy conditions around Sandown Bay.

John,

The storm was filmed by placing the camera on a steady surface, in my case it rested on a jumper, and simply letting the camera 'roll'. Mine was shot at 1920x1080 resolution

A decent video editing suite should allow you to capture an individual frame.

It can be time consuming to get your still shot, but the rewards can be well worth it. And they make great desktops for your computer.

I've never though to try and photograph them, do you need anything special to do so, please?

I had a bracket mounted onto a railing to save lugging a tripod around. I started with a wide-angle setting and worked out exposures and settled down to about 2 mins at f5.6 manually focussed just short of infinity and used the bulb setting to leave the shutter open until I'd captured a good flash. Eventually, as the storm stayed static, I could zoom in to areas of peak activity and correct the auto white balance by using the tungsten light setting to give a closer colouring to what you'd expect to see tending towards blue/violet.

A moody one from the NW Lakes...

Yup; I like sun shots without the sun too.

Different angle - looking down on the clouds above the Celebes Sea at sunset -

In the spirit of the inspirational greeting card shot:

Sunset behind the Haystack and Cape Kiwanda at Pacific City on the Oregon coast last September.  (Note that the structure at the left is a brewery and public house on the beach. Mr. Roundhouse of this parish can testify to the location!)

A couple I recently dug out for putting on the photos section of my website that might also fit here:

Superb shots. I remember being at Crater Lake last year early June and the snow was very deep. It started snowing whilst we were there.
