Chris Turnbull
Another trip around East Anglia today. 755409 arrives at Soham on 11th October 2022 forming the 10.39 to Ipswich. On 31st August 2022 66725 passes under the diverted footpath bridge at Soham with 4L03 Tinsley Yard to Felixstowe. The 66 is right on the spot where an ammunition train exploded in 1944. 158863 crosses Kiln Lane crossing north of Ely with a Liverpool Lime Street to Norwich working. This will reverse in Ely station and return across this crossing taking the Norwich line at Ely North Junction. Norwich on 26th July 2022 with 755325 about to depart for Sheringham. Finally Stowmarket on 30th September 2022 with 755408 crossing the level crossing north of the station. On the same day 745010 speeds through Stowmarket with the late-running 1P18 Liverpool Street to Norwich. Chris Turnbull
Chris Turnbull
Yesterday (14th October 2022) my darling wife and I spent a day at the seaside (other than Felixstowe). Here's a few of my (railway) photos of our visit. This is the delightful station building at Frinton-on-Sea. I was pleased to see that the station still has its Hornby-Dublo footbridge albeit out-of-use. The train service consists of one train per hour in each direction. This is 321324 forming 2F32, the 11.45 to Walton-on-the-Naze starting at Colchester. It return fifteen minutes later. Then on to Clacton-on-Sea where I took this shot of the station building. Very impressive, I thought. I had a while to wait for the next train so I checked out the street map of the area. This showed a footbridge crossing the line a short distance out of the station. A brisk walk and I caught 720585 nearing the end of its journey as 1N24, the 14.44 arrival from Liverpool Street. Back at the station this is 720585 on the right which will form the 15.05 departure to Liverpool Street. On the left is 321323 in a siding. I was intrigued by working 3S60 which Realtime Trains showed as starting at Stowmarket Down Goods Loop, trundling around the Eastern Counties and ending up back at Stowmarket DGL later in the day. And this is it - the Rail Head Treatment Train with 66428 Carlisle Eden Mind (where do they get these names?) this end and 66424 Driver Paul Scrivens the other. It didn't come down the platform as far as I would have liked so I wondered if our Russ P was driving. 😀 Chris Turnbull
Chris Turnbull
Some more photographs of heritage / preserved railways today. Leeming Bar, Wensleydale Railway on 5th June 2005. The other end of the line, Redmire, on the same day. Alresford, Watercress Line on 20th October 2007. No. 7 Owain Glyndwr on the Vale of Rheidol Railway on 23rd August 1966. I'm not sure where I took this but it was probably Devils Bridge. Sir Hadyn at Towyn on the Talyllyn in July 1977. River Esk at Dalegarth on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway on 10th May 2007. Chris Turnbull
A pot-pourri today with no connection whatsoever. Torquay on 21st February 2018. My wife and I had a glorious few days in the west country. The next week the "Beast from the East" arrived! 321332 at Thorpe-le-Soken on 11th August 2007. Like Frinton-on-Sea, this has also retained its Hornby-Dublo footbridge. On the same day this is 321338 and 321320 at Shenfield. Here's a shot I took on 1st March 2014 at Royston. I had been at a meeting in London and was returning to Ely in the evening. It had been a very windy day and the overhead line equipment had been damaged. We had to detrain, the unit returned to London, and we all froze on the platform until another unit arrived to allow us to complete our journey. On 7th April 2015 an unidentified HST passes through Moreton-in-Marsh. Manchester Piccadilly on 8th May 2007 with 150142 and an unidentified Pendolino at the platforms. Chris Turnbull
I thought that another "then and now" selection would be a nice idea so today I took the train to March, that once-great railway town. All of the "then" photos were taken on 8th March 1969 and have appeared before in this topic. The view from the Norwood Road overbridge looking north in 1969 towards March North Junction. The same view on 19th October 2022. The view from the other side of the bridge looking towards the station The same view in 2022. Looking from Norwood Road bridge towards March West Junction. This is as close I could get to the original viewpoint due to vegetation having grown up over the years. A fine array of class 31s adjacent to Hundred Road. This is now the entrance to GB Railfreight, or at least as close as I can guess. The lady in the building, who was obviously the gatekeeper, called me over to ask what I was doing. Once I had explained and shown her my 1969 photos which I had put on my mobile, her whole attitude changed and she couldn't have been nicer. She wouldn't pose for a photo though! When I showed my eldest daughter my post she was very impressed with how much more greenery there is nowadays! Chris Turnbull 1
Chris Turnbull
Detail for the modeller today. In building my models over the years I have taken many photos of details that photographers usually ignore. I have already posted some details of Class 15 locos, now here's a selection of trackside details. This is Spencer Drove Crossing Footpath 12 in Soham in 2001. With the opening of Soham station last December this crossing was closed and the footpath diverted over the line on a footbridge at the station. See my Soham shots to see the arrangement. Just secondhand timber sleepers for the boarding. Colour light signal head detail taken in 2001. Note how the head is not square to the post but is set to give good site lines to trains coming around the adjacent bend. A treadle again taken in 2001. An original Midland Railway buffer stop at Cromer in 2004. Note the wall behind with blue engineering bricks below and red on the upper courses built over the rear struts of the buffer stop. You can mix the styles! Here's a more modern buffer stop on the truncated road to the other platform face. Chris Turnbull
Chris Turnbull
Ely in July and August 2004 when Ipswich tunnel was closed to allow the track to be lowered and traffic was diverted via Ely. 47818 and 90006 on a Norwich to Liverpool Street working on 17th July. 170101 on 26th August. All the following photos were taken on the same day. 170517 and 365522. 67018 66533 Congestion at Ely. As you can see I wasn't the only photographer there! Chris Turnbull
Cambridge over the years today. Cambridge looking south on 3rd May 2003. Looking in the other direction on 30th December 2004 with 365529 and 365511 at the platforms. A lovely warm day at the north end of the station. 170133 on 25th July 2009. 365516 with what is probably a Kings Lynn service on 7th April 2012 with the new island platform and footbridge behind. 170204 on what is probably a Norwich service on the same day. The new island platform on 29th June 2018. In researching these Cambridge photos I was surprised to realise that 2018 was the last time I have taken any photos there. Another visit is overdue with, perhaps, a "then and now" theme. Chris Turnbull
Chris Turnbull
Detail photographs seem popular, much to my surprise, so here's a few more of a Class 58 at Toton on 29th August 1998. I was building a 7mm model of one at the time and I found these invaluable. Chris Turnbull 9
Chris Turnbull
A visit to Crewe today, all taken on 22nd February 2008 390003 Virgin Hero. Repairs to a Pendolino - replacing a wiper blade? 67002 Special Delivery 66428 and 67002 Special Delivery Signal gantry. Chris Turnbull
More heritage / preserved lines today. Bridgnorth on the Severn Valley Railway on a wet 22nd February 2015. 43106 is ready to depart from Kidderminster on the same day. A view over the rooftops at Grosmont on 5th October 2013. Tornado at Grosmont on 2nd October 2010. Brockford on the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway. I don't know if these nameboards are originals or replicas but they lasted until closure in 1952 and are evocative of the line. I had hoped to put another MSLR photo here but RMWeb will not let me upload it. I isn't too large so I don't know where the problem lies. Chris Turnbull
A busy couple of days during which time I have acquired another granddaughter. Now I've managed to get back on my pc I thought a few more shots from Scotland would be good. Fort William on 7th September 2017. The Caledonian Sleeper on the left , steam special to Malliag on the right. And this is Malliag on 6th September 2017 with 156450 forming the service train. The station throat at Kyle of Lochalsh on 5th September 2017 with not a train in sight. Springburn works on 6th May 2006. Glasgow Central on 20th May 2013. I had intended to post another photo of Central but, once again, RMWeb won't let me despite the total size being nowhere near 10MB. Chris Turnbull
I've been busy today making an enormous curved crossover in Gauge One. I've made points before in 4mm and 7mm but 10mm is a whole new experience. Although its been great fun (mostly) there comes a time when its best to give it a rest and I've now reached that time. So, back at my PC, here's a trip around East Anglia. Ely on 7th March 2009 with a class 365 on what is probably a Kings Cross service and a class 170 on what is probably a Norwich service. 153322 at Ely on 19th July 2009. Derby Road, Ipswich on 25th July 2009. Back at Ipswich's main station, this is 66132 headed soutnwards on the same day. 158863 at Norwich on 28th July 2012. A general view of Norwich on 4th October 2014 with 170273 in the platform. Chris Turnbull
My wife wanted to go to one of her favourite shops today (4th November) which is in Bishops Stortford. Of course, I just had to go to the station, didn't I? Bishops Stortford station from the Station Road overbridge. I just missed a train which was pulling out as I got to this spot. I wondered if I would be allowed on the station. There is often a jobsworth who makes life difficult but I am pleased to say that I didn't come across any at Bishops Stortford. Although I offered to buy a platform ticket they said they didn't do them and a very kind chap let me through the barriers with no trouble. There are three services from Bishops Stortford, Liverpool Street to Cambridge North, Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport and Stratford to Bishops Stortford. This is 720566 forming 2S47, the 11.47 to Stratford. These trains use platform 3. 720587 forms 2H25, the 10.53 from Cambridge North to Liverpool Street. Going in the other direction, 720554 forms 2H22, the 10.58 from Liverpool Street to Cambridge North. The low sun at this time of year made photography difficult. Nevertheless, if I chose my spot with care results weren't too bad. This is 720581 forming 2H27, the 11.13 Cambridge North to Liverpool Street. The third service is that to Stansted Airport and this is 745101 forming 1B58, the 11.55 Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport. Just prior to the arrival of this train, the platform had filled with elegant young women and smart young men in crisp uniforms. Whatever is going on, I thought. Then it dawned on me - they were cabin crew off to work. I can't say I found Bishops Stortford the most interesting of stations but it is certainly busy and the staff were very friendly, quite happy to have a chat. Well done them.
