Another unidentified class 222 at Leicester on the same day.  Where are the numbers on these things?

I know what you mean, it is here, in black on dark grey, so very hard to see....

I've been out-and-about with my camera today (28th September) exploring Ely North Junction and the surrounding lines.

1773309791_220928ElyNorthJunction(1)66761on6E86MiddletonTowerstoMonkBrettonRedfearnsSmallP.JPG.1d0238d66d9cbe54a464084df62e8560.JPG

I started with the Kings Lynn line north of the junction and was just in time to catch 66761 on the 6E86, Middleton Towers to Monk Bretton Redfearns.  In order to gain the line to Peterborough this freight takes the Ely West Curve thus avoiding reversal in Ely station.

434532647_220928ElyNorthJunction(3)387302and301onKingsLynntoCambridgesmallP.JPG.ad640bdf996dd1333dc441533cb04945.JPG

A few minutes later and 387302 (with 301 behind) came through with a Kings Lynn to Cambridge train.

1471867404_220928ElyNorthJunction(5)66590on4M81FelixstoweNorthtoCreweBasfordHallsmallP.JPG.1c1d03e2c04679ca9e9e1406ad42b99e.JPG

The first two photographs were taken from a Public Right of Way which then crosses the Peterborough line on a flat crossing.  The top treadplate of the stile makes an excellent vantage point!  Here we see 66590 heading westwards with the 4M81 Felixstowe North to Crewe Basford Hall.

522015040_220928ElyNorthJunction(6)755412onStanstedtoNorwichsmallP.JPG.3d8972e19aceef91fc9ecdd6edba2851.JPG

Over to the Norwich line where 755412 is seen on a Stansted Airport to Norwich service about to cross the River Ouse.

1908327264_220928ElyNorthJunction(9)158854onNorwichtoLiverpoolLimeStreetsmallP.JPG.4c608ae39489f6c13a50bf29bcd4e3e8.JPG

A couple of minutes later and 158854 came through in the other direction with a Norwich to Liverpool Lime Street service.  This will reverse in Ely station and return to Ely North Junction to take the Peterborough line.

308600648_220828ElyKilnLane(5)755421onNorwich-StanstedsmallP.JPG.112e647079b840641595c294248bbb06.JPG

Finally I moved to Kiln Lane level crossing which is south of the junction but north of Ely station.  This is 755421 on a Norwich to Stansted Airport working.

All these photogaphs were taken from Public Rights of Way or from level crossings where I kept to the correct side of the barrier.  Kiln Lane is at a bit of an angle which is why you can't see the half barrier.

Interesting last two posts Chris... 387 110 that you saw at Brighton was a real pain in the bottom when it first started coming up the Lynn Road. Coasting into Littleport Station from Ely, it would pull arcs from the overheads, which no-one would believe me about! In the end I got hold of a number for Hornsey Depot, and reported what was happening to them. They pulled her in for a looks and couldn't find anything wrong, so sent her out again. She was still arcing, so I called them again. She was pulled in again, and they had a really good look, and discovered that the pantograph head was crippled and wouldn't lie flat against the overhead.....

The Second group of photos show a pair of 387/3 units, which have only just only just started to come up here. 301&302 and 303&304 have been working in pairs and this morning 1G09 has just been our first mixed unit with 305 and 123. The /3 units have funny colours on and around their doors, the /1's are green, and the /3's are a weird bluey colour (which might be the same as the blue on the /2 red units, but its difficult to tell!

I was allowed to have a couple of hours on Stowmarket station this morning (30th September).  Here's a small selection from my shots for your delectation.

Speeding through at 10.45 was 66703 on 4L02, Hams Hall to Felixstowe South.

Hot on the heels of 66703 was 755418 with 2W11, the 10.47 Cambridge to Ipswich running five minutes late, at 10 52.

I was intrigued by working 0Z57, Norwich Crown Point to Willesden Brent.  I waited expectantly and, at 11.05, this appeared; 57312.

A cold but fascinatng couple of hours of which I have hardly scratched the surface.  More to come at a later date.

Thanks for more of these Chris, which bring joy to an East Anglian ex pat in Yorkshire!  Difficult to imagine Ipswich-Cambridge was the preserve of single Class 153s a few years ago.

Ah,  so that was you!  You caught me out with that move.  I was expecting you to come through non-stop at a rate of knots and had the camera set to a shutter speed of 1/500.  Instead you crawled down the platform, stopped right by the footbridge where I was stood and someone got out.  A quick change to the shutter speed and I had several good shots.  Thank you.

Is that always a light engine move or do you sometimes have something to pull?

Regards

Well sort of, 2007 was CT but in 2008 it became EMT. 812 seems to have lost its CT branding, but not yet gained any EMT branding, so it is a halfway house between this, NS/TPE/CT with elements from three operators

and this NS/TPE/CT/EMT now with elements from four operators....

Funnily enough while looking for something else yesterday, I came across a whole lot of photos from that 1993 West Anglia steam event.  I'm afraid they're not really fit for scanning though!  What was it with cameras in those days?  I think I probably used an Olympus compact.

Yesterday, 7th October 2022, I combined my two favourite pastimes, walking and railways, so here's some more photos from the Colneis peninsula.

62196603_221007FelixstoweNorth(6)66772on4M29toBirchCoppicesmallP.JPG.4e1d674c294689ddfeab75438f694978.JPG

I started at the north end of Felixstowe Docks where I caught 66772 Maria departing with the 4M29 to Birch Coppice.

1407278517_221007FelixstoweNorth(12)66775on4M33toHamsHallatBlofieldTrackCrossingsmallP.JPG.6baa5fbefae204246edd766b8b35e01b.JPG

A short walk through delightful countryside brought me to Blofield Track crossing where 66775 HMS Argyll climbs away from the docks past signal NQ2 with the 4M23 to Hams Hall.

Another short walk and 755402 departs from Trimley station forming 2R13, the 11.31 to Ipswich.

One advantage of the recent footpath diversions is that the public can now walk alongside the railway line on the diverted paths.  This is the much-delayed 4L83 from Leeds to Felixstowe North nearing the end of its journey hauled by 66418 and 66599.

The enormous Gun Lane bridleway bridge is just short of Gun Lane junction where the double track reverts to single.  66717 Good Old Boy is held at signal FW9028 waiting for 4L89 to clear the single line section.

And here is 4L89 Crewe Basford Hall to Felixstowe North behind 66502 Basford Hall Centenary 2008 having just passed over Gun Lane Junction that can be seen in the background.

Some of my European photographs today.

The Hook of Holland in August 1970.  This was my first visit to Europe and I was travelling on my own to Prague.  Going through the Iron Curtain on the outward journey was bad enough but the return journey for an 18 year-old travelling solo was frightening.

My apologies for the lack of details on the motive power but I am far from knowledgeable on such matters.  If anyone knows more then please feel free to contribute.

I had a day in Peterborough today (11th October) so here's a small selection from the dozens of photographs that I took.

700116 runs in to the station from the sidings to form 9J33, the 12,24 to Horsham.

800208 speeds through non-stop on the Down Fast forming 1D12 a Kings Cross to Harrogate service.

I didn't want to spend all my time on the station so I set off the explore the lines south of the station.  This is 801209 crossing the River Nene forming 1A28, the 13.09 to Kings Cross from Leeds.

Underneath this bridge I found this plaque only slightly defaced by graffiti.  I assume that 801209 in the last photograph is crossing the 1924 bridge.

66078 heads east to go under the ECML (to the right in the background) with 4L45 Wakefield Europort to Felixstowe South.

158864 has just passed under the ECML and is approaching the site of the erstwhile Peterborough East station forming 4L09 a Liverpool Lime Street to Norwich service.

Back on the station this is 180106 speeding north non-stop on the Down Fast forming 1N95, the Grand Central service from Kings Cross to Sunderland.

Yes, you are quite right.  It just goes to show that you should never assume - it just makes an ass out of "u" and "me".

No worries Chris!  We might have bumped into each other yesterday; I arrived at Peterborough at about 1130 and left again on the 1718 to Edinburgh, just after up and down Grand Centrals had passed each other in the station.

Yes, that is very likely.  I arrived at 11.39ish on the train from Ipswich and left on the 15.50.  Apart from a couple of hours in the middle of the day when I went for walkies south of the station, most of my time was spent on platforms 4 and 5 which give the best vantage point and are the most popular with us enthusiasts.
