Answering my own question :D the Ford D1000 is on Weymouth Quay here;-

jcb, I have bought all those prints from that collection, very good quality too.

I had thought it was Waymouth, thanks for confirming. Wonder if the Freightliner container came from the nearest terminal (Southampton ?) by road to load onto a ship for the Channel Isles. Previoud days the old containers would have come on Conflats down the quay !

Thanks Merf -did you buy the NA3T Bedford TK thats not shown as sample?

The flickr BRS site link had some very interesting trucks . I'm interested in all Brit trucks specially working pics , i would have said Old British a few years ago but as we've stopped making trucks now they are all old ish

Yes, the TK I got from them is JLE555D, fleet no. 12VA 7555D L a Bedford KGA13 artic with trailer in NCL livery at a driver of the year competition.

For completness the others are.

Austin atric with Herts. trade plates is probably on delivery from Scammell at Watford. A Southern unit possibly registered TYH???, fleet no. 5376 S

LUW804, fleet no. 1319M S, one of a number of photos taken that day at Nine Elms delivering containers.

JAR323D, fleet no.3KA 8323D M, LMR Karrier Bantam.

OLL127, 3C 5041 S, a S R Bantam with the earlier 2 piece windscreen.

I too am interested in all types of older commercials, along with buses and trains. Since I retired I have put a lot of work into researching the railway road motors, your input on here has been a big help. I have also had much detail from sombody doing similar research, and a former railway fitter who went on to buying the vehicles for B R.

The database now contains details of over 21,000 vehicles from c1900 to today.

Merf,

I must add my thanks for your flickr site, a really good collection of BR vehicle pics etc.

I have put a few of my pics on my fotopic site if anyone is interested. See http://paulwade.fotopic.net/c1918497.html

All the time I was taking pics I rarely took full shots of vehicles, however, they do find their way into the corners of some of my other pics. I started driving BR vehicles when I left rolling stock and joined Power Supply (Electrification) at Paddock Wood, then Buildings and Plant, I think I might have some local PR pics somewhere from the pre-privatisation time.

The NSE Astra van I think was done for PR and then came to Paddock Wood, it might have been a one off.

Cheers.

I like the 'garage' for the fork lift truck. (pic # 6)

Hi Paul

Thanks for posting your collection, very interesting. On my site I have a shot of a Leyland Freighter dropside (A711SYL) which I could not remember where I took it. Your shot of a similar lorry at Ashford is parked in the same spot, sorted.

The Renault gang bus at Hastings is a rare late model, white was common just prior to privitisation, I had only ever seen one of that model. The Sherpa with the box body is unusual too, not seen one like that before.

And I realy like your layout, seen it a couple of times and always thought it looked like it was built by a professional railwayman, from the attention to detail.

Merf,

Added some more pics including an aerial view of Ashford showing where the lorry was parked (mid right of pic). Sherpa with box body interests me too, posted another poor pic but I am sure I have a better one, yet to find. Most of the vehicles at TWY were for the S&T depot located in the Signal Box, except the Sherpa and then Escort C&W vans, plus anything I was driving for a photo visit.

A couple more poor pics at Hastings of the white Renault gang bus. Was intending to model this with a B&W cab/chassis.

Thanks for praise of my layout. I have never done the road vehicles although I have had 2 almost complete Sherpas on my work bench for the last 2 years, one as the C&W one from TWY.

More vehicle pics to follow when I find them.

Cheers.

To answer Steve, B R did not buy second hand unless you go back to the buses in the 50s and 60s. In latter days all vehicles were leased.

The similarity to B T vans is that both organisations were buying large numbers of vehicles and the likes of Freight Rover gave a good price for bulk orders. They also bought bodies from the same makers, one of which (Penman of Dumfries) comes to mind.

Sherpa 400 anybody, please !

Bernard,

I had to look twice, Ambassador? A super Princess I assume. Shows car ignorance.

Steve,

I see the link to BT for the Sherpa box van, I must find that other pic, it was new or in very clean condition when I shot it.

Phil,

The forklift garage was unusual, and yes I never took details of what wagon was used to make it.

Cheers.

Could it be that gunpowder van that is in some of the other shots be what was used for the forklift garage? It looks to be in about the correct place, and the arrangement of the upright members on the side looks the same- I can't think of any other van body (apart from the SR 12t one, and the roof's wrong for that..) that has uprights, but no diagonals.

Thanks JCB, that's the one! The one Kev mentioned is brilliant too.

Steve

ps Any of you chaps know what this is?

Well, the truck is an ex-military Bedford MK 4x4. Might be an ex-army control truck but I though the army mainly used demountable bodies for control purposes. Strange selection of lights with orange, green and blue lights (and what is the round thing full of lights on the roof?). Green light is paramedic/doctor usually.

What a beast!!!

I would offer that the green strobe looking light on the front panel is actually blue, based on comparing it to the repeater blues on the rad grille. Orange lights are usually on police vehicles if they have airfield duties attached to them, being a control unit, it is more than possible that this would be required for all incidents requiring this vehicle, dare I suggest one such incident could be a plane crash??? the round mullarkey on th roof is a raisable mast so has to indicate the location of the vehicle ans well as often having floodlights fitted as well, it's not unusual for these to have multiple lights fitted.

That Bedford MK is a fine machine, registered in Brighton. Strange no markings to which force. MKs were available to others as well as the military although the late registration number would indicate it being demobed.

Back to the models for a change, a couple of recent projects, a chance to try out a new camera.

Many second hand buses and coaches were bought in the 50s and 60s to transport staff, mainly the larger P Way. gangs. I still cringe to see layouts at shows with buses in B R livery picking up passengers at stations. Many were repainted but not all, so when I saw a EFE Bedford OB in tilling red livery, cheap. I have a photo of GAX189 in original livery with the totems added, new in 1947 and aquired by B R in 1957 based at Reading.

Alongside one of the repainted ones as done by EFE and Corgi, 276 W based at Shrewsbury.

The Model Rail special edition Oxford Land Rover produced to represent a Series II truck cab 89. Alongside one I made earlier, a BW models kit.
