Hi All

spending hours again searching for images of early seventies street scenes .

When I came across this: Accident Basildon Road

Not sure if I have copied this correctly , hope somebody can advise if I haven't.

This guy has some late sixties gems , but they are mixed in with more modern stuff.

Hope the drivers were OK

kind regards

Martin

Book Review

Mechanical Horses by Bill Aldridge, Venture Publications.

I found this at the Glasgow show and had to have it. Bill has produced a soft back book with all you need to know about mechanical horses of all types. The development by Karrier and Scammell with the main line railways (mainly the LMS & LNER) A lot of detail of the variation in trailers. Not 100% railways (maybe 25%) by any means but very interesting.

Bill produced a similar book of the same title in 2000 from Trans Pennine Publications. If you have that, then the new one duplicates a lot of the content, although even the pictures that were seen before are of better quality and larger.

It shows that fork lifts have been around a lot longer than we think. I noticed in one of the trailer photos that the goods were on wooden pallets.

There are pallets shown in several of the photos, as well as stillages (cage pallets)- the main problem at the time was that there was very little standardisation of size and orientation (i.e. two-way or four-way), a point which was highlighted in the BR Manual covering the use of handling equipment:-

http://www.barrowmoremrg.co.uk/BRBDocuments/Booklet_BR20429_Issue.pdf

What was interesting for me was to see Siphon Gs being used for flower traffic- I'd heard of this practice, but this is the first time I've seen a photo.

Flowers were LL6 (Ledger Label 6) traffic and accordingly passenger rated so therefore went by 'passenger train' (which of course also meant parcels trains). Isn't odd how things like that stick in the mind umpteen years laterblink.gif And I think you'll find direct loading from road was very common in season 'down West' although, as you've observed, published pictures aren't so common.

Not seen it at Penzance- wasn't there one location with a large, almost triangular, platform/loading bay for fruit and vegetable traffic? Marazion or Ponsondane?

They loaded at Ponsandane but I'm not sure if it was passenger rated traffic there Brian. Definitely loaded passenger rated stuff at Penzance station but I know not offhand to what vehicles.

Superb shot there jcb. Looks like a Southern Region 2ton van, shame the fleet and reg numbers can't be made out.

Thames ET6 Norwich

A longer coachbuilt bodied, probably a 3ton van. The Eastern and Midland favoured these over the plain box vans of the Southern. I think you could walk from the cab to the rear.

Jones KL44-never seen a BR one. Before.

I have on my Eastern Region fleetlist, a number of these. That is the first I have seen of a Midland one.

Bedford TK 1967

8VA 1734D E was a 1966 Bedford KEA5 8ton unit.Reg JLE734D. Looks like a publicity pic. for the corporate image. 1967 was when the double arrow was first applied and look at the drivers spanking new uniform.

Karrier Peteborough 1961

Looks like a JJH registration so a former Midland region vehicle of c1948, a number being transfered to the Eastern Region in 1950.

And the only thingI have managed to find on Flikr recently , a bog standard Bedford HA van at Colchester in 1980.

Another Flikr find

The Coles crane pictured at Longsight depot still in crimson & cream livery. This was also pictured a couple of years ago in Model Rail by Chris Leigh.

And on another thread, news that the Corgi model is now available. So a repaint is coming up.

Thanks Phil, didn't know that.

I saw the model in the flesh (one in plastic and one metal) at Barrow Hill, Model Rail Live. Very nice too. A good time period as well, 1950s till still some around today.

The next one is going to be in BR maroon livery so it may be a bit of a wait for the carmine and cream version.

I found it on the Airey website announced for September. Not maroon, but crimson as they didn't carry a maroon livery. It looks like the same livery as the Longsight one without the cream jib which maybe they didn't all have.

Somewhere I've got some transparencies of BR Ford Yellow Escort THV823M after I had navigated through an argument with a barbed wire fence. Our Area cars at that time were THV810M (also yellow) THV 809M Dark Blue, and THV 8??M in Powder Blue (I think possibly 821 or 822 but I can't be certain). They were replaced by S registration Mark II Escorts but alas I can't remember the reg of any of those offhand.

Thanks for that info Mike, added to my records. I assume from the registrations they were Western Region. Before my time, but it seems that 4 years was the life of the small vans and cars then as it still is today. A mate of mine has just bought a 4 year old Focus from N R.

Jim. If you'r going for a record you should have done one of the 3 wheel Lansings.

You're welcome Merf - sorry I couldn't add any more, and yes they were WR vehicles, allocated to the West of England Division (I dearly wish I could remember the reg of the HA van in which I passed my BR Driving Test in Cardiff in 1972 but alas I can't. And there's another thing which has vanished from the scene - BR Driving Tests and BR issue Licences; I must have one of the latter somewhere but I doubt it's the first as I later had a reissued one permitting me to drive personnel carriers 'up to 12 seats' at the time when I was responsible for a 'fleet' of 3 of them).

Hi Merf

Sounds like an opportunity for someone - we will have to see which one Bachmann do.

Cheers

One to start you off, URC 358S Escort mk II 1.3l estate in sahara beige, known as the 'Thyristor Car' because it was funded by the telecom upgrade budget on the Birmingham Division, required to run thyristor locomotives. Was actually used as an S&T office runabout. Tony Cotterell who booked it out more than most, took it home to Kidderminster "to wash it" and crashed into the railway bridge parapet on the westbound A456 between Blakedown and Kidderminster.

I think the B R driving test may have gone before I started in 1978, although may be wrong. We had the B R licence which was a white card giving details of classes you could drive. I had one for all classes except HGV, issued without any bother as I was previously a bus driver.
